'Resident Evil 5' To Be a Reboot?

Even though Sony Screen Gems is moving ahead with "Resident Evil: Afterlife" (which is to be 3-D, with the "Avatar" team handling the f/x), it appears that they’re already preparing for a fifth movie. But instead of continuing on the story already established, Bloody-Disgusting has exclusively confirmed that the studio is planning some sort of “quasi-reboot,” just seven years after the franchise began.

The reboot has a tentative title of "Resident Evil Begins" and is said to be about a special military unit who are sent in to fight a, “powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.” Sounds just about the same as the plot of the first film, minus the main character of Alice (Milla Jovovich).

This news comes as a bit of a surprise since we recently heard that "Resident Evil: Afterlife" would kick off a new trilogy. How can the fifth movie be a reboot and yet still be part of that trilogy? Also, what will this mean for the franchise star, Milla Jovovich? She’s the zombie-killing hero of the franchise, and is synonymous with it in the mind of audiences. If the lack of mention of her character in the early plot description above is anything to go by, she won’t be in the film.

What do you think of this news: Is it too soon to reboot the "Resident Evil" franchise? Should they just continue with the ongoing storyline?

"Resident Evil Begins" is just in the planning stages at the moment, while "Resident Evil: Afterlife" is scheduled to hits theaters on Aug. 27, 2010.

More news to come! Catch ya' later!

They really have no idea what they're doing over at Screen Gems, apparently. Do we really need the Red Queen/supercomputer AGAIN?!

I'm not against a reboot, but they need to reboot it properly. Jill, Barry, Chris, Wesker, zombies, Hunters, and the Tyrant at the Spencer mansion. Nuff said.

I totally agree with you.
Maybe they can do something with the opening credits, like, where it goes through a kind of freaky/scary montage if Resident Evil 0, which is later explained when Chris and Jill meet up with Rebecca.

Otherwise, the plot follows that of the first game and of course, a scene after the credits showing the fate of Wesker after confronting the Tyrant.

Wesker...he knows how to keep his bitches in line. XD

Yes, so true. So true. You read my mind. I made a Demotivator for Wesker with that quote a while back, but still haven't posted the damn thing on the blog yet.

I'm a slacker.
