2 The Karate Kid $29.0 M

3 The A-Team $13.7 M

4 Get Him To The Greek $6.1 M

5 Shrek Forever After $5.5 M

6 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time $5.2 M

7 Killers $5.1 M

8 Jonah Hex$5.0 M

9 Iron Man 2 $2.6 M

10 Marmaduke $2.6 M

"Toy Story 3" had biggest debut in June history, taking in $109 million this weekend and extending Pixar's streak of opening at the top of the box office to 11.

The last film of the franchise bested its competition — and predecessors — by a mile. The original movie opened at $39.1 million in 1995, while "Toy Story 2" made $83 million four years later.

This time around, the cartoon added 3-D and Imax to the mix, boosting repeat business as kids checked out the film in different formats.

Sadly the film doesn't have the biggest opening weekend for an animated film, as that title is still held by "Shrek the Third" at $121 million.

Still the film will continue to make big bucks as it has amazing word-of-mouth. And let me tell you it really is a great film. The first thing I did when I got home after the flick was take out all my old toys from the closet that I hadn't touched in years and play with them. I know - that's weird. But the movie practically compels you to. Go see it and tell me I'm wrong.

Other films dropped a respectable amount, with only one other film opening this past weekend.

Poor "Jonah Hex." It bombed terribly. The budget has been estimated at around $60 million and the film only made $5 million its opening weekend. And it will only drop lower from there. There goes Megan Fox's career down the toilet!

Expect "Toy Story 3" to hold the top spot next weekend as well since I don't expect "Knight and Day" and "Grown Ups" beating out the kid factor.

9 Iron Man 2 $4.5 M

10 Splice $2.8 M

"The Karate Kid" has won a 1980s showdown at the box office against "The A-Team."

The remake of 1984's "Karate Kid" debuted at No. 1 for the weekend while big-screen adaptation of the 1980s TV series "The A-Team" came in at No. 2 with less than half what "Karate Kid" made.

After three weekends at No. 1, "Shrek Forever After" slipped to No. 3, raising its domestic gross to $210.1 million, becoming the fourth movie released this year to top $200 million.

Other films continues to slip n' slide to DVD land. Some making modest amounts of money, some not even making back its budget. All in all, this has been a slow summer so far and might not pick up but for a few more films. Next summer is going to be a doozy though.

Expect "Toy Story 3" to dominate the weekend. I really have no idea where "Jonah Hex" is going to wind up, but it does have Megan Fox in it...

6 Marmaduke $11.3 M

7 Iron Man 2 $7.7 M

8 Splice $7.4 M

9 Robin Hood $5.1 M

10 Letters to Juliet $3.0 M

"Shrek" bested four new movies this week to stay on top for three weeks in a row. Not something that happens too often in the summer with all the big tentpole films. But this summer has been lacking so far...

And "Get Him to the Greek, the faulty but still funny comedy from the guys behind "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," is supposed to be this summer's "The Hangover." Don't think it will be making the same amount that film did.

"Killers" came in third - giving Ashton Kutcher more things to tweet about.

The big surprise was "Marmaduke" beating "Splice." Maybe the kid factor had its hand in making parents take their kids to see a talking, dancing dog rather than a genetic creature that gets into all sorts of creepy trouble.

Look for "Shrek" and the debuting "A-Team" to sit beneath "The Karate Kid" next weekend as it is expected to open big. Despite how mediocre the film is, and the fact that it's a bunch of little kids fighting (and a remake that bears little resemblance to the original except for plot structure), it's tracking well and is getting lots of positive buzz. It better do as much business as it can because "Toy Story 3" comes out the 18th and is going to crush any movie that tries to get in its way.

Marmaduke - The Winslow family moves to a new neighborhood with their large yet lovable Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way.

Splice - Two scientists fuse DNA samples to create a new organism: a human-chimera they name Dren. As the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into winged creature, her initial bond with her creators turns deadly.

4 Iron Man 2 $16.0 M

5 Robin Hood $10.3 M

6 Letters to Juliet $5.9 M

7 Just Wright $2.2 M

8 Date Night $1.7 M

9 MacGruber $1.4 M

10 How To Train Your Dragon $1.0 M

Nobody was expecting "Shrek 4" to win the weekend. Since last Memorial Day weekend "Night at the Museum 2" did the best, we should have expected this maybe.

"Sex and the City 2" probably would have been No. 1 had it not opened on Thursday with about $14 million. But adding that with its weekend numbers still shows it had a smaller oepning than the first "Sex and the City" film (which was $56.8 million). Can the film match the $152.6 million domestic total of the first film? BTW, women made up 90 percent of the audience for "Sex and the City 2." Go figure.

"Prince of Persia" pretty much bombed. A good opening for most films, but not one made on a $200 million budget. Not expecting this to become a big franchise now...

Other films slip down to DVD land with "Iron Man 2" still making some money. It is right now $35 million away from passing "Iron Man"'s total.

Next week a few new films come out. Will "Shrek 4" take the top spot again or will it fall to a new film (or one of the films that opened this past weekend)? We'll have to wait and see.

6 MacGruber $4.1 M

7 Date Night $2.8 M

8 A Nightmare On Elm Street $2.2 M

9 How To Train Your Dragon $1.8 M

10 Kites $1.0 M

"Shrek: The Final Chapter" (or "Forever After"") dominated the box office its opening weekend just like all the previous "Shrek" movies did. The problem is it is a lower opening than both "Shrek 2" and "Shrek 3." Maybe kids and their parents are tiring of the "Shrek" franchise? Though about 61 percent of the film's haul came from 3D showings.

Wanna know what was a big surprise? How "MacGruber" TANKED. Though I haven;t featured it on this blog, I wound up seeing it and can say it is extremely raunchy - but also pretty darn funny. Was not expecting that from a movie based off an unfunny SNL skit. But it is enjoyable and should be seen.

But "MacGruber," which opened on 2,551 screens, made only $4.1 million. Wanna know how bad that is? It's so bad, that a Queen Latifah movie, on its 2nd week of release, and in only 1,831 screens, made more money. When a Queen Latifah movie beats you, you know you're in trouble.

Do yourself a favor and go see "MacGruber" instead of "Shrek" or "Robin Hood" this week. It really is that funny. You'll be saving cinema from Hollywood believing Queen Latifah can just roll out a stupid comedy every six months and make a buck.

"Iron Man 2" and "Robin Hood" continue to rake in some cash, with the former now at over $500 million worldwide, but the latter still in some financial trouble (for now). And yeah, there's that Amanda Seyfried chick flick out as well. Didn't it. Though I did see her film "Chloe" where she gets naked. Now that was worth a buck.

And "Kites" came out of nowhere. A type of Bollywood film edited for American audiences by Brett Ratner of all people. Huh...

Anyway, next weekend its brawn vs. botox, sands of time vs. ravages of time and any other funny vs. quips out there dealing with "Prince of Persia" and "Sex and the City 2." Which will win the weekend. Judging by the amount of guys who will have to see a certain film...eh, you can guess.

News and Featuretttes I've Missed: 'Prince of Persia,' 'Predators' and 'Captain America'

I've been away from anything movie news related for a while due to a massive amount of school work, but now I have returned with full blogging force!

Here are some interesting tidbits that have appeared online while I've been slaving away in projects and papers.

"Prince of Persia"
Below is an excellent featurette on the film that reveals what all "Prince of Persia" fans have been wanting to see more of - parkour!

"Predators"
Here are two new featurettes for "Predators," the first taking a look at Topher Grace's character, Edwin, and the second one with producer Robert Rodriguez and D\director Nimrod Antal talking about getting involved with "Predators," casting the actors and using CG in the film.

"Captain America"
With all the waiting to hear about who would be cast as Captain America before Chris Evans (The Fantastic Four, Push, The Losers) was chosen, you'd figured he would have been one among many of those who audtioned. But it looks as if director Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, The Wolf Man) wanted him from the start.

“Chris didn’t audition at all.” said Johnston talking to Earths Mightiest. “I was already familiar with everything he’d done and was championing his cause, not that I had a fight from the Marvel team. They were fans of his as well. He came in to the art department to say hi, saw all the jaw-dropping art and designs on the wall and reacted the way I’d hoped he would. It was really his wonderful enthusiasm for everything he saw that cinched the deal. We have some of the best designers and illustrators in the industry working for us and the art is just incredible to wander through. He will bring the perfect balance of dramatic performance and physicality to the role."

The other question is whether Evans will be playing Steve Rogers both before and after he gets the super soldier serum. That means going from a skinny runt to a buffed up hero.

“Casting Captain America is really casting two roles…Steve Rogers before and after the transformation from 98 pound weakling to perfect physical specimen. I can’t divulge how we’re going to do it, but the performance will be Chris Evans from beginning to end. An actor playing Captain America has to embody that backstory and let it inform his understanding of his new self. One of the interesting aspects of the character is the effect that kind of total transformation would have on the his psyche. It gives the character more dimension and the actor playing him a wider range of interesting choices.”

Wonder if they're going to us CGI like they did on Sam Worthington's legs in "Avatar."

"Lobo" and "Green Hornet"

While they may not be the best known or most anticipated comic book movie adaptations out there, the upcoming "Green Hornet" film and potential "Lobo" movie definitely have their share of fans looking forward to both.

But according to IESB, both projects aren't doing well.

Word is in that Sony executives got an early look at "Green Hornet" and their reaction wasn't enthusiastic. They say that the movie is too campy, director Michel Gondry’s direction is off, and that Seth Rogen (even though he’s lost weight for the part) doesn’t work at all in the lead.

A "Lobo" film has been in the works for a while now, but with Guy Ritchie leaving to do "Sherlock Holmes 2" and Warner Bros. not apparently not to happy with how "The Losers" and "Jonah Hex" are turning out - a "Lobo" film may start sitting on the backburner.

That's some pretty shitty news on two films I was looking forward to. Then again, "Lobo" isn't a well-known character in the DC universe and "Green Hornet" was written by the same team behind "Superbad."

That's a whole lotta news and I still need to get back to school work.

New 'Prince of Persia' Trailer

The first trailer for Disney’s "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" that was released back in November highlighted the special effects driven scenery and action that moviegoers will witness in the summer blockbuster.

IGN has just released a new "Prince of Persia" trailer and it’s a bit better than the first. It doesn’t reveal anything new overall but it does feature more story elements through Gemma Arterton’s exposition/narration intertwined with quick action shots. We also get to see a bit more of the use of the dagger to slow and reverse time which I hope is going to be used for some cool action sequences.

In the fantasy adventure based on Ubisoft's popular video game, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

I’m a big fan of the game and from what I’ve see so far from the trailers and features, there’s not enough cool sword fighting and parkour (basically what made the game a success). Hopefully more will come.

The film is directed by Mike Newell and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan, Gemma Arterton as Tamina, Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley and Toby Kebbell.

Behind-the-Scenes Featurette on 'Prince of Persia'

Disney has debuted a new behind-the-scenes featurette on IGN for "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" that's called "Creating an Epic."

The clip features the cast and crew talking about the film's location and special effects. The plethora of interviews include ones with Jerry Bruckheimer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Mike Newell and Ben Kingsley. There is also plenty of new footage, which is always great to see (at least this far out from release).

More Super Bowl Ads

[From Screen Rant]
Super Bowl XLIV‎ is over and the Saints won, but we’re not here to talk about that. It’s often said that the majority of viewers tune into the big game just for the commercials, so on that note we have some TV spots for upcoming movies for you.

We already had a chance to see the Super Bowl ads for M. Night Shyamalan’s "The Last Airbender" as well as Ridley Scott’s "Robin Hood," but now that the game has aired, we can show you the latest commercials for "The Wolfman," "Prince of Persia" and "Alice in Wonderland."

We’ll go through this in order of when the movies debut so starting us off is Joe Johnston’s remake of "The Wolfman." which stars Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving.

Next up is Tim Burton’s re-imagining of the classic tale of "Alice in Wonderland." The film utilizes Burton regulars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and stars young Mia Wasikowska as the title character.

Last but not least is the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced video game adaptation "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." The blockbuster film is directed by Mike Newell and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the title character alongside Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina.

There wasn’t that many studios forking out the big bucks this year for time during the big game but out of them all, my favorite high above the rest is for "The Last Airbender," which is one of my most anticipated films of the year.

Another Featurette on 'Prince of Persia'

One of the major releases of summer 2010 is Disney’s adaptation of the popular video game, "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." The action-adventure film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the title character and is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

In addition to the trailer released in November, we’ve seen some behind-the-scenes footage including the first "Prince of Persia" featurette which focused on the character of Dastan (Gyllenhaal), his background and his journey within the film.

This second video focuses on The Sands of Time itself in the form of the magical dagger that represents the plot device of the video game and this movie.

As with the first featurette, there are scenes from the movie intertwined with interview segments from director Mike Newell, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the star, Mr. Gyllenhaal.

What do you think of the look of the film so far?

Starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal are Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina, Reece Ritchie and Toby Kebbell.

We've already seen the first trailer, so everyone should know what to expect, but there is some new footage in here that's worth checking out.

Also starring in the film are Gemma Arterton ("Quantum of Solace," "Clash of the Titans"), Alfred Molina ("Spider-Man 2," "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice") Ben Kingsley ("Sexy Beast," "Shutter Island").

IGN Rewind on 'Prince of Persia' Trailer

What did you think of the "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" trailer that came out earlier this week? Do you think it will be a good video-game adaptation?

IGN has done a "Rewind Theater" trailer commentary for the film with the game's creator Jordan Mechner, who discusses the trailer and how it compares to the video game.

Mechner discusses the input he had in the game, the reasons for changes and the ins and outs of it all adding, "I never wanted to do a movie that would retell the story of 'Sands of Time' the game. 'Sands of Time' is a story I wrote to be played and it works perfectly in the game, but with a movie we had a chance to do something different."

As a fan of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, I am now looking forward to this film. It has a a very large production, something that's been missing when it comes to recent video game adaptations. Obviously the movie isn't going for anything too grand and instead will focus more on character quirks and grandioso action set pieces.

Watch the "Rewind Theater" below because you will actually learn some bits about the trailer and film that you did not know before.

Trailers and Spoofs for 'Wild Things,' "Transformers 3' and "Prince of Persia'

Other than the news that Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum") will be producing a movie on "The Berenstain Bears," nothing really big is happening today. A nice, quiet Tuesday.

So I'm going to throw you some videos to watch.

A funny spoof on "Where the Wild Things Are" that makes fun of all those hipsters that are just too cool for everyone else.

While I kind of liked the real "Where the Wild Things Are," this movie might be fun too...or maybe not.

Here is a sneak peek teaser at what "Transformers 3" will look like when it comes out in 2011.

I liked the part with the explosions.
More on "Transformers 3" (because we so loved "Transformers 2").
Buried in the special features of the "Revenge of The Fallen" Blu-ray, Michael Bay talks about his early thoughts for the next chapter in the "Transformers" franchise.
Watch the video below of Bay's whole spiel from the Blu-ray feature.

Do you believe him? I don't know what to believe...

Moving on to something different, remember the new "Prince of Persia" trailer that was released the other day? Well, another new trailer has come forth. Watch it below!

Is it any better than the other one?

'Prince of Persia' Trailer Has Arrived

The trailer for Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," a film based on the video game, has debuted online.

The story is set in medieval Persia, where a king and his son, Prince Dastan, defeat the powerful Maharajah and kidnap his daughter Tamina. They begin looting his palace of priceless treasure, including an extravagant hourglass, when the prince finds a mysterious dagger that holds untold powers.

The film looks like it will be at least decent. Two of my favorite parts of the video game were the relation ship between the prince and the kidnapped daughter (which they seem to have done in the trailer) and the amazing platforming (bits of wall-jumping can be seen in the trailer as well). I am looking forward to seeing this movie. I can only hope it won't be another addition into the lackluster trend of failed video game adaptations.

"Prince of Persia" stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley with Mike Newell ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") directing. It is due in theaters on May 28, 2010.

'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' is Moving Forward

ComingSoon.net had a chance to catch up with Jerry Bruckheimer this week and ask him about the status of "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" as well as "The Lone Ranger."

Currently, the producer is in the middle of filming "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" with Jon Turteltaub ("National Treasure") in New York City, while "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is well into its post-production, with both movies scheduled for release in the summer of 2010.

Bruckheimer told the site that "Pirates 4" is the next big priority for both him and Disney.

"It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," he said. "A beloved character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."

Bruckheimer then goes on to say writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot are writing the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" right now and the new film will be a “whole new way of going” without giving any plot details.

Since Gore Verbinski recently announced that he may not direct a movie based on the video game "BioShock," ComingSoon asked Bruckheimer if there was a chance he might return for a fourth movie. "You never know," he admitted. "He created the franchise so we'd love to have him back, but it's kind of up to him."
As for "The Lone Ranger," rumors began to spread "Prince of Persia" helmer Mike Newell was going to take the reigns on that project, but Bruckheimer told ComingSoon, “We don’t have a director yet. He’s too busy on ‘Prince of Persia’ right now.”

Check them out!

Prince of Persia

Our first look at "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which doesn’t hit theaters until May 28, 2010 but is sure to keep people interested until next summer.

The sword and sandal feature is based on the video game set in medieval Persia, Earth’s mightiest and most mysterious kingdom, where a king and his son defeat the powerful Maharajah and kidnap his daughter, looting his palace of priceless treasure, including an extravagant hourglass, and a mysterious dagger.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the lead role with supporting roles from Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley with "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" director Mike Newell at the helm.

Surrogates

"Surrogates" features Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell as a pair of FBI agents investigating the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves — fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles — enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes.

The film hits theaters on September 25 and also has a viral Web site associated with the feature.

Terminator Salvation

"Terminator Salvation" comes out May 21 and stars Christian Bale and Sam Worthington. Set in the year 2018, humanity fights the overpowering force of SkyNet and discover something new and sinister from the machines.

POTC 4 details

This could all be more rumors (I loathe rumors) but I love Pirates of the Caribbean and can't wait to see the fourth one. So real news or rumors, I shall post!

Comingsoon.net got to sit down with Jerry Bruckheimer on the set of Prince of Persia and talk about some of of the films he is currently working on, which includes The Lone Ranger, National Treasure 3, and POTC 4.

As far as approaching the sequels for "National Treasure" and "Pirates of the Caribbean," Bruckheimer says that both are having scripts written. "We've sat with the writers and we're working up the story and plotlines right now. They're in the process of finishing 'The Lone Ranger' so they're working on both of those simultaneously, same set of writers, Elliot and Rossio, who did all three 'Pirates' and worked on 'National Treasure (2)'"

When asked whether they might consider gearing another "Pirates" movie to IMAX, based on the success Warner Bros. had with The Dark Knight, Bruckheimer responded, "Absolutely. I'd love to do it, so let's just see if we can work it through the production schedule with everything else."

"I think they're pushing towards 2012," Bruckheimer told us about the possible release date for this fourth "Pirates" movie. "Hopefully we can make it we'll see."

Those are the facts, but the rumors I mentioned deal with whether Jack Sparrow is going to get a brother in the next Pirates film.

According to The Daily Mail, "Russell Brand is reportedly thrashing out a deal to appear in the fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean film - as Captain Jack Sparrow's younger brother Jonathan. The deal to appear in the children's film could be worth as much as £5million and would catapult the 33-year-old into the Hollywood A-list."

Brand was recently seen in the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall as the British rock star Aldous Snow.

Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the upcoming Prince of Persia movie. It is based upon the best-selling game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time made by Ubisoft.
The movie is slated to come out in 2010. The movie is a joint effort by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
Filming began on Sept. 16.
The film was originally supposed to come out the week after Transformers 2 in June 2009, but with fear of not getting good business, the movie was pushed to 2010. It will come out the week in-between when Shrek 4 comes out and when Thor hits theaters.
Jerry Bruckheimer is working on this film while also working on other ones such as Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (not yet confirmed to have continuity with the others) and National Treasure 3.
