Movies coming out this week!
2012 - An academic researcher leads a group of people in a fight to counteract the apocalyptic events that were predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar.
Pirate Radio - A 1960's comedy about an illegal radio station run by a band of rogue DJs on a ship in the middle of Britain's North Sea. By defying the tastes and laws of the ruling government, the disc jockeys hooked their listeners on pop music and its attendant ideas of love and free will.

1 Disney's A Christmas Carol$31.0 M
2 Michael Jackson's This Is It $14.0 M
3 The Men Who Stare at Goats $13.3 M
4 The Fourth Kind$12.5 M
5 Paranormal Activity $8.6 M
6 The Box $7.8 M
7 Couples Retreat $6.4 M
8 Law Abiding Citizen $6.1 M
9 Where the Wild Things Are $4.2 M
10 Astro Boy $2.5 M
"A Christmas Carol" had a pretty high budget (between $150-185 million) and that is not a bug opening weekend. Disney probably won't be making back lots of profit from this technology-filled film.
And lots of people must not be into new movies! Michael Jackson's documentary continues to make money for people who wish to profit from his death while "Paranormal Activity" continues to keep people up at night.
Films on the lower ends of the list will continue to peter off to DVD land.
What film will win next weekend?
Probably the epic disaster movie "2012."

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has blasted itself off into money. During its first day it made $60.6 million, ranking second behind "The Dark Knight" Adjusted for ticket price inflation, though, "Revenge of the Fallen" would slot in fourth place, behind "Spider-Man 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."
"Revenge of the Fallen's" first day included an estimated $16 million from its midnight opening. Only "The Dark Knight" and "Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith" had bigger midnight debuts, pulling in $18.5 million and $16.5 million, respectively.
Over its two-day haul before the weekend it made $89.2 million and now over the weekend, its total domestic gross is at $201 million. Yeah, it is making money.
"The Proposal" dipped 45 percent this past weekend and "The Hangover" has made $213 million worldwide on a budget of $35. Very nice math.
"Up" has is now the top earner of 2009 (with "Star Trek" in a close second), but "Transformers" is only less than $100 million behind.
Next week can the kid factor take down "Transformers?"

8 Land of the Lost $3.9 M

10 Terminator Salvation $3.0 M
"The Proposal" is the biggest opening ever for Sandra Bullock. I was surprised too. I really like "Speed," but I guess she does better in date movies.
"The Hangover" has made $164 million on a budget of $35 million. 'Nuff said.
Other films are still making money (except for "Land of the Lost") and "Year One" had a decent opening, but not enough to guarantee a profit.
Next week, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." It has been receiving lots of bad reviews. Can it live up to the hype?

"The Hangover" fell only about 25 percent from last weekend. I just recently saw the film myself and thought it was quite funny, but the word of mouth on this film must be amazing.
"Up" passed "Monster vs. Aliens" this weekend for domestic dollars. It might do as well internationally. If "Up" can make another $45 million domestically, than it will be passing "Star Trek."
What movie has made the most money for 2009? Surprisingly it is "Angels and Demons."
It has made $123 million domestically, but in its foreign markets the film made almost $291 million. It right now sits at around $414 million worldwide ("Star Trek" is at $344 million worldwide while "Up" hasn't been out too long oversees yet to make a dent in its earnings).

"Up" took over the No. 1 spot from 20th Century Fox's "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," which slipped to second-place with $25.5 million. "Night at the Museum 2" does have the same box office profile as the first film. "Night at the Museum" opened to $42.2 million and when on to make $48.2 million over its second weekend. That is a 14 percent increase instead of "Night at the Museum 2's" 53 percent decrease.
Paramount Pictures'"Star Trek" steered a strong course, coming in at No. 5 with $12.8 million and passing the computer-animated "Monsters vs. Aliens" as the year's top-grossing movie so far. Movie Review: Up

"Up" marks Pixar's tenth film and also its most mature. While there are plenty of fun and goofy moments, similar to those that have made their films audience favorites since "Toy Story" in 1995, "Up" takes on more adult themes such as the loss of a loved one.
The first 15 minutes of the film begins with the budding romance of Carl and Ellie, two children fascinated with the idea of exploration and both enamored with the world-renowned adventurer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer).
Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Ed Asner) marries the woman of his dreams and their life is shown through a voiceless montage gives witness to the courtship of Carl and his wife Ellie, their early marriage, medically proscribed childlessness, financial setbacks, and Ellie’s eventual illness and death.
One of the things that most moved me about "WALL-E," was the fact that despite all of its eye candy and sci-fi trappings, it was essentially a love story, and an incredibly sweet one at that. The same can be said about "Up," as the film is anchored by Carl’s everlasting love for his dead wife. Their life together, despite containing its share of sadness and broken dreams, is the kind of life we all dream of- and by the time the montage reaches it’s inevitable conclusion, don’t be surprised if you’re choking back a few tears.

When Ellie passes away, a devastated Carl is left to fend for himself against a world that seems to have no use for him. After a greedy land- developer
tries to have him carted off to a retirement community, in order to steal his land, Carl decides to once and for all, fulfill his life long dream of exploring South America. With the help of 10,000 helium filled balloons, Carl is able to make his house into his own personal blimp, and soon takes to the skies. However, Carl has an unwanted passenger- a hyper-active, eight-year old “Wilderness Explorer” named Russell, who is intent on earning his “assisting the elderly” merit badge. The two eventually land in Paradise Falls- located deep in the Venezuelan jungle, where they meet among other things, a talking dog named Dug, and the now elderly, and unhinged, Muntz.
The film is visually stunning and Pixar animation again at its finest. You don't miss anything if you only see the movie in 2-D. Making the film in 3-D added nothing to the already gorgeous animation and the story carries the movie more than any 3-D technology.

Still, the best thing about this movie is the story and characters. Each character in the film is developed and given enough background to satisfy anyone's curiosity., Heck, even the talking dog was a fully formed character with a complete, and nuanced arc.
Adults and kids together can enjoy the film for its humor and moral points.
9/10

Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.
Drag Me to Hell - A loan officer (Lohman) ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse which turns her life into a living nightmare. "Night at the Museum 2" did 63 percent better on its opening weekend than its predecessor. That is a big improvement, but will it stay at the night for very long?
The budget for "Terminator Salvation" is listed at $200 million. It needs to start making some money fast to have "Terminator 5" greenlit. Maybe in the international market?
Other films are again petering out, but "Star Trek" is still living up to all the hype and buzz it has been generating. This was also the best weekend of the year (the top twelve films made $168 million).
Next week family friendly movies will again take the top spot as "Up" will take the lead and "Night at the Museum 2" will probably still dominate.

Clips and Featurettes
We have another featurette from Pixar's "Up" to share with you today.
The last "Up" featurette was called Discovering a Lost World and it looked at the world that Carl and Russell find themselves in down in South America. This featurette looks at the relationship between these two "unlikely heroes" who end up on an adventure together.
We also have another video blog from Edgar Wright on the set of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." This video covers the first day of principal photography on the set, including some shots of Michael Cera, Mark Webber, and most of the cast.
And lastly we bring you footage of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from ShoWest.
One problem I had with the first film was that it was way too corny and from this clip it looks like that corniness will be back (also will be some more cool robot fighting and fan service of Megan Fox).
The footage has been removed at the explicit request of Paramount.
As Michael Bay explains: "I just wanted the fans to get a taste of what we have been making for a year and a half because we have been so quiet. The piece was cut about a month ago for this ShoWest thing I accepted this past month - so as you can see many of the shots were far from being finished renders."

Another Upisode. This one called "Snipe Trap."
"The Phantom"
According to The Geek Files, "Actor Ryan Carnes, whose credits include 'Doctor Who' and 'Desperate Housewives,' is to play comic book hero the 'Phantom' in a new TV movie.
Carnes, 26, will play the masked crimefighter in a four-hour pilot movie on the Sci Fi channel which is intended to launch a new series.
The project, by screenwriter Daniel Knauf and his son Daniel, will air in 2010, according to The Hollywood Reporter."
"Full Metal Panic"
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Mandalay Pictures has acquired theatrical rights to and will develop a big-screen version of 'Full Metal Panic,' a Japanese manga series that blends action, comedy and high school romance.
The property derives from writer Shoji Gatoh's series about a teenage anti-terrorist commando named Sousuke Sagara who is given the mission to protect a high-school girl with mystical powers.
'Panic,' which is set in a world almost exclusively without adults, is known for mixing visceral action with wry comedy.
Zac Efron's name has surfaced in connection with 'Panic,' with the actor holding a conversation on the project. Efron, already a heartthrob among the teen audiences to whom the project could appeal, is also honing the action-adventure side of his career with a potential attachment to the Warner Bros. adventure 'Jonny Quest.'"

By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.
Watch Discovering a Lost World and learn how the creators behind "Up" imagined the world that the protagonists of the film go to.

Another Upisode
The first Upisode for Pixar's next film "Up" showed Russell practicing his animal calls. In this second short, Russell prepares to practice first aid on Carl.

Pixar's Up is directed Pete Docter, one of the original Pixar members who directed "Monsters, Inc." previously and wrote the stories for "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2." The film is co-directed and written by Bob Peterson, who also wrote "Finding Nemo." Disney will debut Up in theaters everywhere on May 29th this summer.

Disney/Pixar have released another trailer for "Up," the tenth Pixar film and the first one to be made in 3-D.
Check it out.
From the Academy Award-nominated team of director Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc.") and co-director Bob Peterson comes "Up," a comedic adventure taking off (and lifting spirits) in summer 2009. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate, and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell, gives him a new lease on life. Up takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer - look Up.

Up
Up, Pixar's 10th film, comes out May 29, 2009.
The Disney press release described the film as "Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. “Up” takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer—look “Up."
Pixar announced more details on the character Carl. "When Carl was a child, he met and eventually married a girl named Ellie who grew up in a small midwestern town. Ellie always dreamed of exploring the mountains but died before she got a chance. Now, when developers threaten to move him into an assisted living home, Carl decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie."
Up features the voices of Edward Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai and John Ratzenberger.
Up is the first Pixar film to be presented in Disney Digital 3-D.
One character from UP appears in RATATOUILLE and, for a clue as to which one, Pete Docter (one of the directors) points us to the Ratatouille DVD commentary (I don't have the DVD, so if someone finds out, comment on who you think the character is).
It is also rumored that Harrison Ford and Robin Williams will play voices for additional characters in the animated film, but I haven't found out who (if the rumors are true).
More news to come! Catch ya' later!
