Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News

Movies coming out this week!

2012 - An academic researcher leads a group of people in a fight to counteract the apocalyptic events that were predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar.

Pirate Radio - A 1960's comedy about an illegal radio station run by a band of rogue DJs on a ship in the middle of Britain's North Sea. By defying the tastes and laws of the ruling government, the disc jockeys hooked their listeners on pop music and its attendant ideas of love and free will.

Movies coming out on DVD and Blu-ray!

The Ugly Truth
Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut

Box Office results for the weekend!

1 Disney's A Christmas Carol$31.0 M

2 Michael Jackson's This Is It $14.0 M

3 The Men Who Stare at Goats $13.3 M

4 The Fourth Kind$12.5 M

5 Paranormal Activity $8.6 M

6 The Box $7.8 M

7 Couples Retreat $6.4 M

8 Law Abiding Citizen $6.1 M

9 Where the Wild Things Are $4.2 M

10 Astro Boy $2.5 M

"A Christmas Carol" had a pretty high budget (between $150-185 million) and that is not a bug opening weekend. Disney probably won't be making back lots of profit from this technology-filled film.

And lots of people must not be into new movies! Michael Jackson's documentary continues to make money for people who wish to profit from his death while "Paranormal Activity" continues to keep people up at night.

Films on the lower ends of the list will continue to peter off to DVD land.
What film will win next weekend?
Probably the epic disaster movie "2012."

Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News

Movies coming out this week!

G-Force - A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world.

The Ugly Truth - A macho morning TV show correspondent (Butler) makes a bet with his love-challenged producer (Heigl): If his tips on how to land and keep a guy don't work, he'll quit the business. But while he coaches her through a fledgling romance, can he avoid falling for her, and vice versa?

Orphan - After their unborn baby dies, Kate and John Coleman (Farmiga and Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child as a hopeful way to bring some joy and normalcy into their lives. Esther (Fuhrman), a 9-year-old orphan, captivates the couple, and comes home to live with them, though a strange sequence of events follows Esther's arrival, who's angelic façade might mask sinister intentions.

Box Office results for the weekend!

1 Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince $79.4 M

2 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $17.7 M

3 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $13.7 M

4 Bruno $8.3 M

5 The Hangover $8.3 M

6 The Proposal $8.2 M

7 Public Enemies $7.5 M

8 Up $3.1 M

9 My Sister's Keeper $2.8 M

10 I Love You Beth Cooper $2.6 M

"Harry Potter 6" has accumulated $200 million worldwide but still has a lot of work to do if it wants to crack that rumored 'billion' mark. I don't think it will make it.

"Ice Age 3" made a fair amount of money domestically, but over 73 percent of its gross has come from the foreign market which has helped it earn way more than "Up."

In fact, the only other film to have earned more money worldwide than "Ice Age 3" is "Transformers 2." Just goes to show people's taste in cinema...

As for "Bruno," it dipped 73 percent since last weekend. Word of mouth must have hurt this film badly. "The Hangover" is still doing well for its seventh week out, but it probably won't crack the top 10 films of the summer (counting for domestic earnings).

Other films are petering out to make way for another weekend to be dominated by a kid friendly film. Last year for Disney was all about Chihuahuas, but this year it is all about Guinea Pigs. Who will win the spot for the top? "Harry Potter 6" or "G-Force?"

What’s New in 'Watchmen: The Director’s Cut'

Merrick over at Ain’t It Cool News has a reader named “Ulysses” who reportedly has seen "Watchmen: The Director’s Cut," which is set for release on Blu-ray and DVD July 21.

Here are just a few of the new scenes that “Ulysses” noticed in "Watchmen: The Director’s Cut" [SPOILERS!!!]:

* At the end of Rorschach’s search of the comedian’s apartment. Two cops enter, he knocks one of the cops out and jumps out the window as the other cop is firing his gun at him.
* Rorschach has more dialogue from the comic with Dr. Malcom. Also in his story of the girl, the murder is shown as in the comic - walking outside, asking his dogs to bark, when they don’t he draws his gun and enters the building.
* …Hollis talks on the phone with Sally, only to be interrupted by knocks at the door. He has a great montage death scene. They also explain why the knot heads go there at an earlier point.

Now, those scenes mentioned above are only 3 of 10 that “Ulysses” provided. For the full list, head on over to Merrick’s post at AICN.

Sounds like "Watchmen: The Director’s Cut" is worth seeing after all. Or is this all just pointless foreplay before :Watchmen: The Ultimate Edition" gets rolled out?

'Watchmen' Director's Cut

Zack Snyder stuck to his guns, bucked the fans when he needed to and created a dark, thought-provoking blockbuster unlike anything you’re likely to see out of Hollywood again for quite some time. Sadly "Watchmen" did not meet its expected earnings, but fans can still get the movie they enjoyed on DVD and Blu-ray soon.

Snyder gave MTV News a preview of the “Director’s Cut” Blu-Ray disc that hits theaters July 21 – and along with the Hollis Mason death scene that fans have longed to see, there’s some pretty awesome stuff on there.

“There’s a couple Rorschach scenes; it’s a little bit more violent overall,” Snyder said of the “Maximum Movie Mode” Blu-Ray disc, which even has a mode where the director walks onto the screen and explains certain scenes’ significance. “It’s a little gorier, a teeny bit gorier; like, when Veidt’s being assassinated, the secretary puts her hand out and she gets shot in the hand - and her fingers fly off.”

As for the other goodies inserted into Snyder’s 25-minute-longer Director’s Cut, “After Hollis dies, we cut to Dan and Rorschach and they go to Happy Harry’s to get some info on who’s trying to assassinate Veidt…at the end of that scene, in the theatrical version, it cuts [after they get some information]. In the longer version, Dan notices on the TV that there’s a report that Hollis has been murdered. He sees that, and then he sees a Knot Top in the bar, and he attacks him and beats the sh-t out of him, just like in the graphic novel. Then Rorschach pulls him off and says ‘not in front of the civilians!’”

“[Dan Dreiberg] is getting emotional, he’s knocking the guy’s teeth out of his mouth; it’s pretty gory,” Snyder promised of the scene that had to be cut from the theatrical release for length. “It’s the kind of thing where you get to see Dan lose it — which helps set up the end of the movie a little bit.”

“Everybody gets a little bit extra character from all that stuff,” Snyder said of the new cut. Make sure to reserve it because it hits shelves in less than a month.

Zack Snyder May Go PG-13

While at a Warner Bros. press release for the Blu-Ray release of the Watchmen Director's Cut, CHUD was able to discuss with director Zack Snyder about "Watchmen's" disappointing performance at the box office and what he will be doing with his next film, "Sucker Punch."

"Not to be snobby or anything, but I think the movie doesn't have the kind of... it asks a lot of the viewer," Snyder said. "It's not 'entertaining' in the classic sense of the word. That's just a fact. It's not an action film, it's not a comedy. Dramas are not hot right now, and no one wants to see a dramatic superhero movie. It's inherent in the material. I was kind of surprised by how excited everyone was getting at the time of release, because I always knew the movie was particular. I knew there were [only] certain people who would say 'This is awesome.

"We made $55 million on our opening weekend and everybody was like, 'Oh that's too bad.' And then 'Night at the Museum' made $58 million and everyone was like 'Hey, it's a box office bonanza!' I was like, 'Really? REALLY? A PG-13 movie about some kids in a frickin' museum and they make a few million more than us and that's awesome?' Maybe it's just sour grapes, but I felt like it was a little bit personal.

"It is R-rated and it's almost three hours long. There's no version of a three hour long R-rated movie about troubled superheroes that is a summer blockbuster. I don't see that happening."

Snyder went on to say how his next film might be toning down as to make more bang for its buck.

"If you can make 'Taken' PG-13, you can make this movie PG-13," he said. "That's what I believe. Because it's more fantastic. No one really dies in the movie."

He's got a point - there's plenty of violence in the "Lord of the Rings" films that would have gotten the films an R rating if it were humans being hewed to bits. "Return of the King" in particular seems to be right up on the edge of what's acceptable, and I imagine that edge is where Snyder will have in "Sucker Punch."

"I think 'Sucker Punch' is a smart movie," he said. "It absolutely is challenging, and it's f***ing hardcore. [A]t the end she gets... it's dark! But it's f***ing actiony like nobody's business. We hope the action we're creating is off the charts, and it's not stupid."

"Sucker Punch" is set to hit theaters on March 25, 2011 and the "Watchmen" DVD will hit shelves July 21.

Versus Fan Videos

According to The Geek Files, "Comic book fans often imagine battles between their favourite superheroes and get locked in heated discussions online about who would win.

There's no doubt that superpowered showdowns between characters who've never crossed swords in the comics - or are less likely to ever meet because they are with different publishers - creates some excellent 'what if' debates.

Crossover battles - or indeed team-ups - have yet to happen in the movies, mostly due to different studios owning film rights.

But some creative editing from YouTube user silverlightsaber has changed all that. He's created a series of videos in which unlikely sets of heroes cross paths, often with explosive results."

Silverlightsaber explained: "This is a non-profit fan film made purely for fun. With X-Men Origins: Wolverine coming out, I wanted to make a fun trailer. I know Watchmen takes place in an alternative universe but what would happen if the government-sponsored Weapon X program was really the Watchmen? How would the government use them to control the mutant problem? What would the world be like in a world split between vigilantes and mutants?"

The footage comes from "X-Men," "X2," "X-Men: The Last Stand," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" trailers and "Watchmen" trailers.

Silverlightsaber said: "This is a non-profit fan video made purely for fun. What would happen if General Ross contacted the government to send out their top secret weapon, Hellboy, to take out Hulk? Here's how I envision it..."

The deftly interwoven footage comes from the trailers for "The Incredible Hulk" and from "Hellboy" and the trailers for "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army." The music is Mein Herz Brennt by Rammstein.

Silverlightsaber said: "This is a non-profit video made purely for fun. Since Christian Bale is starring as John Connor in Terminator Salvation released in May, I figured I'd make an interesting cross-over between the Terminator franchise and Bale's other blockbuster franchise, Batman.

"The Terminator vs Batman, who wins? This was a very difficult crossover to make so I hope you enjoy it."

Footage comes from "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."

Would you see these awesome crossover movies? I would!

Watchmen Case Isn't Settled

"Watchmen" was a pretty sweet movie but didn't perform as well as it could have in theaters. But the lawsuit insanity behind the film, which was between propert rights for which studio owned it, isn't over. Fox won the battle and the big question now is who will pay up?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Warner Bros. and producer Larry Gordon have set a date to figure out who's responsible for the legal fracas that led to Fox owning a piece of 'Watchmen.' But given the pic's lackluster boxoffice performance, there might not be much loot to fight over.

Attorneys for the two sides have agreed to meet May 13 in a confidential, nonbinding mediation before showbiz mediator Daniel Weinstein. At issue is how much, if anything, Gordon owes Warners after a judge ruled that Fox -- which initially developed the property with Gordon -- owned a distribution right to the superhero pic.

Heated chain-of-title litigation between Fox and Warners ended in a January settlement that gave Fox a cash payment and up to 8.5% of the film's proceeds, depending on how well it did. The $138 million-budgeted pic has grossed $180 million worldwide after a heavy marketing campaign.

While Warners certainly isn't celebrating the weak boxoffice haul, one bright spot is that the studio likely will owe Fox only about 5% of the film's proceeds, according to multiple sources familiar with the settlement."

Will Gordon wind up having to pay the money to Fox or will it Jake Bloom's law firm which is at fault for not recognizing a 1991 agreement on which Fox based its lawsuit.

"The Bloom firm is said to have a $15 million insurance policy that both Warners and Gordon likely will seek to tap for the settlement. Given the film's performance -- and the fact that sequels and derivative works are likely dead -- that amount could cover everything that will be owed to Fox. Some believe, however, that a global settlement will require Warners, Gordon and his attorneys all to contribute."

Seeing as how I am interested in getting involved with entertainment law, this is some serious business that I should be paying attention to.
But who is at fault? Who should pay? The movie is already out so why should we care?

9Taken $2.7 M

10The Last House on the Left (2009) $2.6 M

"Monsters vs Aliens" dominated over the weekend and earned a lot of money. Yeah, family films do well. And not to mention that over 50 percent of the gross earnings came from screens tat showed this film in 3-D (which had to have higher ticket costs, of course).

"Haunting in Connecticut" did well for a ghost horror story. Based on a true story...yeah...

"Knowing" has actually gotten good word of mouth and stayed in the Top 5. People are actually saying good things about this film except for Nick Cage.

All other films are just staying in the Top 10. No one really wanted to see "12 Rounds" and "Watchmen" is hanging in there (though will most likely not be in the Top 10 next weekend). This might also be the last weekend for "Taken." It has had an amazing run since January. Was this film profitable? Heck yeah!

Check back next week to see what film earns No. 1 Movie in America. I'm thinking "Fast and Furious" unless more kids beg their parents to see "Monsters vs. Aliens" (I actually think parents bring kids to the movies to make them shut up).

"Paul Blart: Mall Cop" is no longer in the Top Ten. That is a good sign.
Next week, "Monsters vs. Aliens" will dominate at No. 1. Why? Because as one of my friends keeps telling me, family movies win out all the time.

"Watchmen" can be considered a great movie while also being considered a commercial failure. The film was made with a large budget (well over $100 million) and in two weeks has made $86 million. It dropped almost 70 percent from the previous week.

Families needed to take kids to movies and "Watchmen" certainly isn't that film, so "Race to Witch Mountain" won the weekend simply for that family reason. "The Last House on the Left" did well considering it is another remake of a horror film.

All the other films are just petering out the month of March. "Miss March: itself failed in getting its audience, but I didn't expect it to do that well anyway.

What film will be No. 1 next weekend?

Movies coming out this week!

Race to Witch Mountain
- When a cab driver (Johnson) picks up an unusual fare -- a brother and sister duo with paranormal powers, who are being pursued by a nefarious organization -- he teams up with a discredited astrophysicist (Gugino) to protect the kids and, ultimately, the rest of humankind.

The Last House on the Left - After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang led by a prison escapee (Dillahunt) unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging the parents of one of the victims -- a mother (Potter) and father (Goldwyn) who devise an increasingly gruesome series of revenge tactics.

Miss March - Waking up from a four-year coma, Eugene (Cregger) takes a cross-country trip with his sex-crazed best friend (Moore) in order to crash a party at a famous men's magazine's legendary headquarters so he can win back his former sweetheart -- who is one of the mag's hottest new pin-ups.

1 Watchmen$55.6 M

2 Tyler Perry's Madea Goes To Jail $8.8 M

3Taken$7.4 M

7 Coraline $3.3 M

8Confessions of a Shopaholic $3.1 M

9Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience $2.7 M

10Fired Up $2.6 M

"Watchmen" did not meet the success of the studio estimates, which was around $70 million. This may be due to the long running time and causing the film to not have as many showings as other movies, but hopefully it won't tank much in the second week. Otherwise this film will be considered a bomb.
Everything else didn't even make it past $10 million. Other films stayed pretty much in the Top 10 (except "Street Fighter" bombed so bad it was at No. 14). "Jonas Brothers" also fell down 77 percent. Fans have showed their vote. The like Hannah Montana better.
Notice "Taken" hasn't left the Top 5 since its stateside debut in January? Yeah, it is a good movie.
"Mall Cop" has been a profitable movie. Its profit is currently at five times it production rate. Sequel anyone?

Next week we have some interesting movies coming out. Will one dethrone "Watchmen" or will the gritty comic movie stay the king?

Watchmen Review

Finally, time for my "Watchmen" review.
It is indeed a good movie. A great movie. Long and exactly faithful to the famous graphic novel.

The film is set in an alternative world of 1985 where Richard Nixon is still president and the world is on the brink of nuclear war. The heroes of the golden age are remembered while the new heroes are outlawed and try to find meaning in life. They must get back together to solve the mystery of who killed one of their own.

And with that the two hour and 20 minute long epic begins.
Points of interest that other reviews said that became negative aspects of the film shall be first addressed.

The length of the movie is long. It will only get longer with the Director's Cut, so I am not complaining at the long movie. It isn't that much longer than "The Dark Knight."

Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias. I have read that he is apparently just the wrong actor for the role and that his portrayal of the character makes him look frail and weak. At the end of the film, Ozymandias portrays feats of almost superhuman strength. I don't think this was in part of Goode's acting, but he just didn't look built enough for the role or was shown any real points in the film to show his strength (he did show his speed) earlier in the film.

The darkness of the film and its grim outlook on humanity. Yes, the film is dark and it doesn't make you jump for joy at the end (did "Dark Knight?"), but it is still an amazing tale woven through many cuts from flashbacks back to the films' present. It is dark and won't make people happy, but it doesn't make people sad and want to hate the film either.

Dr. Manhattan is better on the page than on film. But I thought he looked really good. The effects done on Billy Crudup fpr Dr. Manhattan was just a treat and it was really nice to look at the blue demigod, even if his genitals were showing. Yeah, it was there in full frontal glory, but it wasn't pointed out all the time. It was just there, not like a glowing halo around Manhattan Jr. I just think maybe Crudup's voice should have been worked on for the characters. The huge body builder look just didn't fit with Crudup's smaller voice.

Most of the unknown actors in the film made the characters in the film hollow. I just categorize acting according to if it is really bad, passing or phenomenal. No one's acting was terrible (especially not in a big budget film such as this). I felt everypone's acting was passable for the character's they were playing (Malin Akerman as Laurie Jupiter / Silk Spectre II, Patrick Wilson as Dan Dreiberg / Nite Owl II). Jeffrey Dean Morgan asEdward Blake / The Comedian played his hated character extremely well, showing the true inhumanity of his character. Jackie Earle Haley as Walter Kovacs / Rorschach almost stole the whole show with his awesome portrayal as the crazy vigilante. The jail scenes were truly fun and entertaining to watch.

My one true problem with the film was the music. It was great 80's tunes, but the songs just did not fit into the film in the points Snyder had them in there. Every time another song played during the movie I heard a couple of groans in the theater and it just made the scene awkward. Let me say the film had a so-so sex scene, but the song that started playing just made it abysmal and not worth watching almost.

In the end, I really loved the movie and want to go watch it one more time in theaters to catch things I missed. Director's Cut on DVD with "Tales of the Black Freighter" will make it longer but create a whole new experience. I will be waiting for that day.

9.1/10

Watchmen - Preview to the Review

Because of my Internet problems (which I always have when I go home), the "Watchmen" review will be going up tomorrow. Until then, latest news on the film's opening day will be revealed!

According to Slash Film, according to numerous Hollywood execs polled by the Web site, “Watchmen” looks to make anywhere between $55 and as high as $70-$75 million (guessed by “one exec at a competing studio”) in the coming three days. The number “Watchmen” fans and Warner Bros. executives will be watching is $70.8 million, which would top “300″ as the top all-time March opening take.

Other biggest March openers include Snyder’s "300" ($70.8M) and "Ice Age
: The Meltdown
" ($68M).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Further aiding its much-watched bow, the Zack Snyder-helmed comic book adaptation will play in an impressive 1,600 locations starting at midnight Thursday. That's substantially more than the 656 midnight shows that helped Snyder's ancient Greece actioner '300' fetch an incredible $28 million in only the first day of its $71 million opening weekend in March 2007.

The first-day haul for '300' was the second-highest ever for an R-rated pic, after the $42.5 million tally that Warners registered with 2003's 'The Matrix Reloaded,' according to Nielsen EDI. The previous widest release for an R-rated pic was the distributor's 3,603-theater bow for 'Reloaded.'"

According to Variety, "Warner Bros.' 'Watchmen' grossed $4.6 million in Thursday midnight runs, more than double the midnight gross for Zack Snyder's previous film '300' [$2.5 million]."

"Watchmen" officially opened in a total 3,611 theaters. That's the widest theater count ever for an R-rated film.

So "Watchmen" is already breaking records in all kinds of sales and theater openings for March and R-rated films. Lets see how much it makes over the weekend. Maybe it will break some more records.
More news to come (as well as reviews). Catch ya' later!

Watchmen: Cast and Creators Speak

Watch the cast, director Zack Snyder and co-creator of the graphic novel of "Watchmen" talk about different aspects of the film.

The movie comes out tonight at midnight. Be there.

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Ozymandias/ Adrian Veidt

Matthew Goode stars in the highly anticipated (and so close to coming out) "Watchmen" as the smartest man in the world, Adrian Veidt.

In the graphic novel, an assassin attempts to take the life of the business man, but the killer is no match for the quick and powerful Ozymandias.

This scene doesn't show much, but from the little bit of gore shown you can tell it is Snyder helming this picture and that it is rated R.

"Madea Goes to Jail" made "The Jonas Brothers" its you-know-what over the weekend. Really slow weekend at that, with low numbers down the board. But "Slumdog Millionaire" is still raking in the dough from its Best Picture (and many other) wins while "Taken" does well because it is just a cool movie.
"Street Fighter" just bombed, tripped, fell and all other sayings that represent and downward spiraling of failure.
This was one of the worst opening weekends since last December, but this weekend has "Watchmen" coming out. What are your predictions on how much it will make?
I'm going to guess at more than $70 million.

Clips and Featurettes for Transformers, Watchmen and more

A clip from "Watchmen" showing the entire fight scene from a prison riot.
Watch as Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II kick some prisoner butt.

Not gonna lie when I say that wasn't really that exciting. I consider some the fight slo-mo fights in "300" just to be eye-catching while this was...just a prison fight.
I don't know what else to say.

Watch Michael Bay blow sh*t up in this featurette for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Lots of explosions. Oooooh.

In "Land of the Lost," there are really big mosquitoes. Really big. And gross. Don't believe me? Watch this.

I don't know whether to say that was funny or just stare at the frigging bug. That freaked me out. Seriously.

"Star Trek" fans (or hopeful fans), watch this featurette. There is no real theme to it, it is kind of just showing off J.J. Abrams and his awesomeness with this movie.

I never watched the original show, but I feel like this reboot of the franchise will get younger audiences to want to get into the "Star Trek" phenomena.

"Donnie Darko" is a great movie. It is just so strange and out there. Not to mention original. The sequel will have to really try to sell itself to me because the idea of a grop of individuals trying to save the universe (that is what it looks like to me) doesn't seem as fun as one guy trying to figure things out on his own.

"S. Darko" takes place in the summer of 1995, seven years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko’s younger sister, Samantha (Daveigh Chase), who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance. She and her best friend Corey (Evigan) set off on a road trip to Hollywood in a bid to ‘make it big’, but their journey is cut short when their car breaks down unexpectedly, leaving them stranded in a small desert town. When a meteorite happens to crash-land nearby, Samantha is plagued by bizarre visions telling of the universe’s end and it appears that their breakdown was part of some grander plan. When she finds out she was actually adopted by the Darkos, and that she is in no way related to Donnie, she must face her own demons and, in doing so, save the world and herself.

All these nice goodies rolled into one post!
