'The Phantom' TV Trailer

Way back in April, we got our first glimpse at concept art from "The Phantom," SyFy's television miniseries based on the classic purple-suited hero created by Lee Falk. Now, the first trailer for the project has popped up online, giving us a better idea of the series' premise and a look at how that concept art was translated into an actual costume.

Originally posted on YouTube, the "Phantom" trailer features a significantly younger take on the masked crimefighter, and even offers a nod to the different look he'll be sporting in the series.

"The Phantom" debuts in 2010 on SyFy.

The Phantom's New Groove

According to Sci Fi Wire, "'The Phantom' stars Ryan Carnes as the title hero and as his alter ego, Chris Walker, in this re-imagined version of the classic comic strip, which has been updated to the present day.

In the two-night, four-hour event, Isabella Rossellini guest-stars as the villainous Lithia, the head of an experimental mind-control program. Also starring are Cameron Goodman as Chris Walker's love interest, Renny, and Sandrine Holt ('24') as the Phantom's trusted advisor, Guran.

Here's how Muse Entertainment describes the Phantom's suit: 'The Phantom's body suit is woven of a high-tech, nano-matrix, dark purple fabric, which is pliable, soft and also glitters with a dark metallic sheen. The fabric is a layered micro-weave of Kevlar, Twaron and Heracron fibers, skinned with a titanium-ceramic alloy neurosymbioticmesh, resistant to heat, bladed weapons, falls, impacts and small-arms fire.

'The nano-matrix fabric actually receives and amplifies intra-muscular nerve transmissions from the person wearing the suit to affect its density and movement—similar to modern bio-electronic prosthetics. Like an insect's exoskeleton, the mesh amplifies by a factor of 2.5 times the Phantom's normal output.

'The Phantom's ballistic vest and cowl helmet/mask are reinforced with contoured Chobham armor plates and wired for cellular and radio communication. The Phantom also wears black fatigues, and his purple and black boots are similar to sticky-soled rock-climbing shoes.'

Production began in Montreal under director Paolo Barzman. The Phantom is slated to air in 2010 and is produced by Muse Entertainment."

Movie News Mash 10

"Up"

Another Upisode. This one called "Snipe Trap."

"The Phantom"

According to The Geek Files, "Actor Ryan Carnes, whose credits include 'Doctor Who' and 'Desperate Housewives,' is to play comic book hero the 'Phantom' in a new TV movie.

Carnes, 26, will play the masked crimefighter in a four-hour pilot movie on the Sci Fi channel which is intended to launch a new series.

The project, by screenwriter Daniel Knauf and his son Daniel, will air in 2010, according to The Hollywood Reporter."

"Full Metal Panic"

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Mandalay Pictures has acquired theatrical rights to and will develop a big-screen version of 'Full Metal Panic,' a Japanese manga series that blends action, comedy and high school romance.

The property derives from writer Shoji Gatoh's series about a teenage anti-terrorist commando named Sousuke Sagara who is given the mission to protect a high-school girl with mystical powers.

'Panic,' which is set in a world almost exclusively without adults, is known for mixing visceral action with wry comedy.

Zac Efron's name has surfaced in connection with 'Panic,' with the actor holding a conversation on the project. Efron, already a heartthrob among the teen audiences to whom the project could appeal, is also honing the action-adventure side of his career with a potential attachment to the Warner Bros. adventure 'Jonny Quest.'"

The Phantom on TV

All the way back in December there were reports that "The Phantom" was getting a reboot. Check it out in one of my earlier posts here.

Now according to The Hollywood Reporter, the Sci Fi channel (sooned to be changed to Syfy) will have a "Phantom" miniseries.

"'Phantom' has been adapted a few times without much success, but Robert Halmi Jr., president and CEO of RHI entertainment, said the previous stumbles are a good reason to try again.

'That there hasn't been a successful 'Phantom' leaves the door wide open for us, since nobody has made it their own yet,' Halmi said.

Sci Fi appreciates that the crusader doesn't have superpowers and is more in the grounded vein of Iron Man and Batman. 'It's not a guy in purple tights,' said Mark Stern, Sci Fi Channel executive vp of original programming."

Sounds interesting. Bringing "Phantom" to television may play out better than bringing him back to theaters.

Movie News Mash 3

Another Mash of Movie News! This all could have been their own stories, but due to my computer troubles, I must make some cut backs!

"The Crow"

Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of “The Crow,” based on the comic created by James O’Barr.

Ed Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed screen transfer, in which rock musician Eric Draven is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance. Though the original became a gothic-style hit that grossed nearly $100 million worldwide, it is primarily remembered for a tragic accident in which star Brandon Lee was killed during filming.

For Norrington, “The Crow” deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with the Marvel Comics hero “Blade,” Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.” Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a film since.

"Terminator 5"

Halcyon Co. toppers Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek are developing a fifth instalment of the man-vs.-machine franchise.

Helmer McG, who directed the upcoming fourth pic, "Terminator Salvation," is working with the Halcyon duo on the latest project.

When Anderson and Kubicek acquired the rights the lucrative "Terminator" franchise last year from previous owners C2, the former ad exec and banker envisaged the re-booted series as a trilogy. Christian Bale has signed on in the role of John Connor for all three roles. Newest pic is tentatively skedded for a 2011 release.

"The Phantom Legacy"

"The Phantom" was a hero film that came out in 1996 and many did not like the film. What was originally thought to be a sequel, but is now confirmed to be a reboot, is in the works in Australia.

Bruce Sherlock, who was executive producer on the last "Phantom" movie and will also be producing "Legacy," believes this version will blow away the previous one.

“I, frankly, think that’s what was missing in the first ‘Phantom’ — we had a very limited budget,” Sherlock said. “It’s a better budget this time and also I just feel very comfortable with the script. I think we did it okay before, but I really, honestly, feel we can do it better. A lot better.”

Sherlock plans to keep the cast and crew of “The Phantom Legacy” a homegrown group, which he hopes will shine a light on Australia’s top film and creative talent. Already, he has tapped Australian Tim Boyle to write the script and possibly direct the film, and Boyle intends to focus the story on the father/son dynamic of “The Phantom.”

“The film will be set in the present day and will deal with the concept of destiny,” said Boyle.
