Movies coming out this week!
Dinner for Schmucks - Tim (Rudd) is a rising executive who "succeeds" in finding the perfect guest, IRS employee Barry (Carell), for his boss's monthly event, a so-called "dinner for idiots," which offers certain advantages to the exec who shows up with the biggest buffoon.

Box Office results for the weekend!
1 Inception $43.5M
2 Salt $36.5M
3 Despicable Me $24.1M
4 The Sorcerer's Apprentice $9.69M
5 Toy Story 3 $9.03M
6 Ramona and Beezus $8M
7 Grown Ups $7.6M
8 The Twilight Saga: Eclipse $7.03M
9 The Last Airbender $4.17M
10 Predators $2.85M
In a showdown of adult-themed thrillers, Christopher Nolan's trippy caper "Inception" took the top spot at the box office for a second straight weekend, beating out Angelina Jolie's return to action in "Salt."
Clearly "Inception" is a film people are talking about which is encouraging newcomers and second viewings. "Salt" is essentially Jolie as a female Jason Bourne and hasn't garnered the same rave reviews that "Inception" has.
The production budget of "Despicable Me" is at $70 million, and at $170 million worldwide, it's a pretty good success (unless those advertising costs were through the roof).
"Toy Story 3" is a success as well, something Disney needs after the fall of both "Prince of Persia" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."
The rest of the film begin the descent into DVD-land, including the new film "Ramona and Beezus." I guess Selena Gomez isn't as much of a draw as Miley Cyrus is.
What will win next weekend? Well, some weird flicks are opening in theaters, so the top spot winner is really a gamble this weekend.

Movies coming out this week!

Ramona and Beezus - When grade-schooler Ramona Quimby (King) senses that her family's home is danger, she uses her boundless energy and enthusiasm to save the day.

Box Office results for the weekend!
1 Inception$60.4 M
2 Despicable Me$32.7 M
3 The Sorcerer's Apprentice $17.3 M
4 The Twilight Saga: Eclipse $13.5 M
5 Toy Story 3 $11.7 M
6 Grown Ups $10.0 M
7 The Last Airbender $7.4 M
8 Predators $6.8 M
9 Knight and Day $3.7 M
10 The Karate Kid $2.2 M
"Inception" opened on the same weekend that blockbuster "The Dark Knight" was released two years ago, and director Christopher Nolan has again scored with critics and fans by winning the weekend by a landslide.
"Despicable Me" continues to do well, earning $32 million in its 2nd week. Word of mouth will keep this cute little cartoon in the top ten for a few more weeks.
I thought "Sorcerer's Apprentice" would put in a big showing, especially for the family audience, but they weren't feeling it (especially since an animated family-friendly film is already out). Is the Disney family film dying or are people just sick of Jay Baruchel already? "Sorcerer's Apprentice" looks like it'll be running out of magic sooner rather than later. Sequel? Eh...
"Eclipse." Almost $500 million worldwide on a budget of $70 million. Have to give Summit credit for knowing how to make a profit.
Meanwhile, "Toy Story 3" has made $584 million worldwide on a $200 million budget (the film is still a success and is at least good), "Grown Ups" is still in the same spot and "The Last Airbender" tries to make more profits to warrant a sequel.
"Predators" dropped like the Dow Jones with a 73 percent decrease going from 3rd to 8th. That's around the 30th biggest drop of all time.
"Knight and Day" and "The Karate Kid" won't be in the Top Ten for much longer. Expect them on DVD and Blu-ray in the fall.
Will the brain teaser "Inception" win the Comic-Con weekend as well or will Angelina Jolie's return to action in "Salt" rule the weekend?

Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News
Movies coming out this week!
Inception - Dom Cobb (DiCaprio) is a thief who specializes in the art of extraction, the stealing of secrets from a target's subconscious. Though his profession cost him everything he has ever loved and has turned him into a fugitive, an offer for a final job -- one that requires him to plant an idea instead of pilfering it -- could be his chance at redemption.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Master sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Cage) recruits a seemingly everyday guy (Baruchel) in his mission to defend New York City from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Molina).

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" didn't have as much bite as I thought it would, falling to 2nd place in its 2nd week behind "Despicable Me," which did huge box numbers at $60.1 million. "Eclipse" is now sitting at $450 million worldwide.
Coming in third with $25.3 million is "Predators." Not a huge success for the supposed reboot of the franchise, but this film will likely make back enough money to cover its budget. Will it warrant another Predator film? We'll have to wait and see...
Congrats to "Toy Story 3" for becoming the highest grossing domestic film of the year, knocking "Finding Nemo" off its throne as Pixar's top grossing film as well. The third film in the "Toy Story" franchise has made around $340 million domesitcally (as compared to "Finding Nemo" at $339 million and "Alice in Wonderland" at $334 million).
Now it just has to go for the worldwide box office title and "Nemo" will be No. 2 in the Pixar vs. Pixar box office battle. The 3D ticket prices helped "Toy Story 3" get there, but the fact that it's also one of the best films of the year helps as well. So far it's sitting at over $550 million worldwide (while "Nemo" earned $867 million worldwide).
M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" rounded out the top 5 with $17.2 million, bringing its two-week total to $100.2 million. The movie is Shyamalan's first to break $100 million since 2004's "The Village."
The rest of the films dropped slightly as they will continue to dip in the next few weeks until they finally wind up on DVD in your local Wal-Mart or Best Buy (or any other store that sells movies).
Next weekend is a big one as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" goes up against "Inception." Disney family film vs. Nolan's science fiction tale? Who will win?

Now Paramount is movie ahead with a full-length feature film around the character. "Transformers 3"
The news - since Megan Fox is out, a new leading lady will be entering the film. And who better than a lingerie model? Mr. Michael Bay - can't you do better than that? But then again, the male GMA will probably want a new hot chick in the film since Fox is out. *sigh*
The new actress is Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, a Victoria's Secret model. She has no acting experience but in the grand scheme of things, even if she did, it likely won’t change the quality of the overall product of "Transformers 3" nor the arguably undeserved box office results it will attain.

"Alice in Wonderland"
The news - Tim Burton's latest film has become the sixth film in history to pass the $1 billion mark. Most of that money comes from the overseas market. The film earned around $332 million domestically in its box office run in the US, taking in the remaining $667 million from the international markets. I stopped watching the numbers for this film a long time ago (as did many others), so this is a complete surprise. Who knew the film would be such a success overseas?
But is the film actually that good to be among the top few who have also earned over $1 billion? The only other movies that have achieved that success (in order starting at #1) are: "Avatar," "Titanic," "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "The Dark Knight." Need I mention how three of the films now six films on that list came out in the past 3 years? Are the higher movie tickets and 3D inflations helping? Maybe in a few decades making a billion dollars won't be considered a vast amount of money...

'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' International Trailer
Disney has released an international trailer for the live-action version of "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice," which stars Nic Cage, Jay Baruchel ("Tropic Thunder") and Alfred Molina ("Spider-Man 2").
If you haven’t guessed from the title, "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice" is a re-imagining of the famous Disney animated segment from "Fantasia."
Balthazar Blake (Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness.
"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is directed by Jon Turteltaub ("National Treasure") and is due out in theaters on July 16, 2010.

'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' is Moving Forward

Currently, the producer is in the middle of filming "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" with Jon Turteltaub ("National Treasure") in New York City, while "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is well into its post-production, with both movies scheduled for release in the summer of 2010.
Bruckheimer told the site that "Pirates 4" is the next big priority for both him and Disney.
"It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," he said. "A beloved character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."
Bruckheimer then goes on to say writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot are writing the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" right now and the new film will be a “whole new way of going” without giving any plot details.
Since Gore Verbinski recently announced that he may not direct a movie based on the video game "BioShock," ComingSoon asked Bruckheimer if there was a chance he might return for a fourth movie. "You never know," he admitted. "He created the franchise so we'd love to have him back, but it's kind of up to him."

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Monica Bellucci is to star alongside Nicolas Cage in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."
The 44-year-old Italian actress will play Veronica, a sorceress who is the long-lost love of Cage's character Balthazar Blake.
The Disney film revolves around Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage), a sorcerer who recruits and trains a young protege (Jay Baruchel) to help fight the forces of darkness. Celebrity illusionist Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) joins forces with an evil sorcerer named Horvath (Alfred Molina), to “gain ultimate powers.” The film, which has been shooting in New York for the last two months, also features Teresa Palmer ("Bedtime Stories") as Baruchel’s love interest.
