Box Office results for the weekend!
1 Avatar$73.0 M
2 The Princess and the Frog $12.2 M
3 The Blind Side $10.0 M
4 Did You Hear About the Morgans?$7.0 M
5 The Twilight Saga: New Moon $4.3 M
6 Invictus $4.1 M
7 Disney's A Christmas Carol $3.4 M
8 Up in the Air$3.1 M
9 Brothers $2.6 M
10 Old Dogs $2.2 M
James Cameron's "Avatar" cost somewhere around $300 million to make and market. There were big expectations from Fox about how it would do its opening weekend. And how did it do? Not so great.
$73 million domestically isn't exactly something to high five each over but it did make a killing at $159 million overseas. So far it has earned $232 million dollars worldwide. And with the east coast having been snowed in, expect numbers to be strong next weekend when the East Coast finally gets to check it out and others enjoy a repeat viewing.
"The Princess and the Frog" dropped over 50 percent, which is bad news for people who wish to see another hand-drawn 2D film in the future. Yes, it will rebound a little over Christmas… but the film needs more good word of mouth to stay strong over its $105 M budget.
"The Blind Side" fell the least of the wide releases and has made nearly $165 M domestically. It only needs another $13 M to crack the top ten of 2009 (domestically) — seems like a sure thing.
"Did You Hear About the Morgans" is another formulaic rom-com that most likely came out while better films are in theaters. And "New Moon" is only $3 M away from passing "The Hangover" for fourth place in domestic gross for this year.
Other films are petering out into the world of DVD/Blu-ray land. But what can we expect of Christmas weekend? Will "Avatar" remain on top or will "Sherlock Holmes" knock it down? Or will the kids win out the holiday weekend with "Chipmunks 2"?

Summer Movies of '09
This is a follow-up to my very first post from last year and to review most of the films I saw this past summer. Also, coincidentally, this is post No. 1,000. Sweet.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - This is the third film in the "Ice Age" franchise and another film thrown into the 3-D mix. I enjoyed the first film and can honestly say the I don't remember much of the second (I just remember it not being that great). This film, while taking the plot straight from "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with some "Moby Dick," is actually entertaining at some points (I chalk all the real humor to the new character Buck, voiced by Simon Pegg). Also noticed there was a lot more Scrat (the squirrel creature who loves nuts) in this film than in the others. Guess the filmmakers realized he was a popular character.
6.8/10
District 9 - This is one good film. It is unique and amazingly made for its low budget. Even the documentary style of the film isn't too bad because the perspective switches from that to narrative cinema several times throughout the movie (especially during the awesome gunfight at the climax). If you are any kind of sci fi fan this is a must see.
8.8/10
(500) Days of Summer - This is not a romantic comedy. This is not a chick flick. It is a story about life, love and relationships. The film jumps around a lot over the course of the 500 days, but first time director Marc Webb is able to make the story understandable to the audience. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are just great actors and have very good chemistry in this film. If you're tired of those giant Hollywood blockbuster films and just want to relax, this is the perfect movie for you. There is even a song and dance number (I loved it even though I am not a fan of musicals).
8.5/10
Inglourious Basterds - Quentin Tarantino is a fantastic director and his newest film fits in perfect with all his others. Why? Because of the amazing dialogue. Though "Death Proof" is not high on my list of Tarantino films (besides the car chase scene it was all dialogue), "Basterds" has a good enough blend between dialogue and action to satisfy the audience. Not to mention that almost all the dialogue is used to create tension in many of the scenes so you can't look away. A story well told in Nazi occupied France.
8.3/10
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - I did not like the first "Transformers" film because I thought it could have been a lot better than it was. I did not have much hope for this next film and that is a good thing because now I am just pissed off at Hollywood. I'm sorry, but special effects do not make a movie. Yes, the effects in the film are phenomenal. But the plot, acting and pretty much everything else was like nails on a chalkboard. Right now I can still not even explain what happened in the film. Again, this movie could have been so great (giant freaking robots, c'mon), but everything just fell through. Doesn't matter though because it has made tones of money and I know a third film will be coming out. If they can get rid of the stupid humor in the next one, so many people will like it (and parents will actually want to bring their kids to see it too).
5.3/10
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Holy cow, they are getting older. Things are finally coming to a head in the Harry Potter franchise as the next two films will deliver the final book of the series. As for this sixth installment, it mixes the ever-present darkness with lots of light humor about relationships. A fine addition to the franchise but it is merely a stepping stone to the grand finale that will be the "Deathly Hollows."
7.3/10
G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra - I was expecting this film to be along the line of "Transformers" and suck, but it actually turned out to be an entertaining popcorn flick. The acting and plot (though still not the best) were way better in "G.I. Joe" than "Transformers" (but the latter film wins with tons better special effects). The constant action will keep you entertained instead of having a few action scenes spread out with a bunch of stupidity. Yo' Joe!
6.5/10
Angels and Demons - I thought this book was better than "The Da Vinci Code" and I came up with the same result with the films. While I believe the movie would have been better if it had stuck more to the book (the villain was entirely changed), it still had a better story and more action than "Da Vinci Code."
6.3/10
Gamer - A film with an interesting concept but failed to really deliver. The movie is more like a really geeky teenager's dream of the future. The concept seemed really cool and I was hoping to see how the interactions worked between the people being controlled and the people doing the controlling, but sadly that was left out to capitalize on the crazy action and sexuality. Too bad since the film is pretty short and the payoff at the end isn't that great.

Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News
Movies coming out this week!
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - Inspired by the children's book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain.
Love Happens - On a business trip to Seattle, a popular self-help guru (Eckhart) sparks with a woman (Aniston) who attends one of his seminars. Their connection causes his to realize, however, that he hasn't truly confronted his wife's recent passing.
Jennifer's Body - A cheerleader at a small midwestern high school becomes possessed by a demon and sets out to kill off all the guys in town.
Movies coming out on DVD and Blu-ray!
Box Office results for the weekend!
1 I Can Do Bad All by Myself $24M
2 9 $10.9M $
3 Inglourious Basterds $6.55M
4 All About Steve $5.8M
5 The Final Destination $5.5M
6 Sorority Row $5.27M
7 Whiteout $5.1M
8 District 9 $3.6M
9 Julie & Julia $3.3M
10 Gamer $3.15M
Tyler Perry continues his winning streak with "I Can Do Bad All by Myself." It didn't make as much as "Madea Goes to Jail," but that can be chalked up to not having Madea's name in the title of the film.
"9" did better than expected, beating out both "Whiteout" and "Sorority Row." Those films did terrible. Three other films from previous weekends beat them out. The terrible reviews didn't help them, but more likely the terrible films truly screwed them.
Next week we have a romance movie, a kid flick and a horror film with Megan Fox. Who will take the weekend?

6 Shorts $6.6 M
7 G-Force $4.2 M
8 Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince $3.5 M
9 The Ugly Truth $2.8 M
10 Post Grad $2.8 M
"Inglourious Basterds" is the biggest Tarantino opening ever, by a hefty $12.5m over "Kill Bill Vol. 2" ($24.1 M domestically).
Other films dropped, but not by much given other releases this past weekend failed to make much of an impact on the Top 10. "Shorts" failed miserably and Robert Rodriguez should stay away from children movies from now on. "Spy Kids" is done with.
Somehow "G-Force" keeps going strong and "Harry Potter 6" is just about to crack $900 M worldwide. Now that made some money as "Post Grad" did not. Nor do I expect a lot of these lower numbered films to be here next weekend as two horror films come out as well as a nice hippie flick.
More news to come! Catch ya' later!

Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News
Movies coming out this week!
Inglourious Basterds - An American-led killing squad known as "The Basterds" terrorize the Nazis in German-occupied France during World War II.
Post Grad - When recent college graduate Ryden Malby (Bledel) discovers she can't land a good job because of the working world's harsh climate, she moves back in with her oddball family in order to reconsider her options.
My One and Only - A 1950s-set comedy in which the glamorous Anne Deveraux (Zellweger) leaves her adulterous husband and embarks on a drive down the Eastern Seaboard on a quixotic search for a wealthy man to fund a new life for her and her sons.
Casi divas - A comedy centered on four women, each of them from different corners of Mexico, vying with hundreds of other aspiring actresses for roles in a movie producer's new project. Their respective missions become crystal clear once one of the country's top actresses -- who also happens to be the producer's on-again, off-again lover -- fails to get the starring role.

7 Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince $5.1 M
8 The Ugly Truth $4.5 M
9 Ponyo $3.5 M
10 500 Days of Summer $3.0 M
The differences between "G.I. Joe" and "District 9" (saw "D-9" over weekend, great movie!) couldn't be more clear. One had a budget north of $200m (if you include marketing) while the other had the name brand power of Peter Jackson. I wonder if this will send a message to Hollywood?
A 59 percent drop for "G.I Joe." It actually outperformed "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" percentage-wise in its second weekend – but without that Wednesday opening. And of course "Transformers 2" had made nearly $300 m domestically once the second weekend ended, "G.I. Joe" is just about to crack $100m.
"Ponyo" and "500 Days of Summer" (saw "500 Days" over the weekend too, another great movie!) have only limited theaters, so they won't be making lots of money. Neither will "The Goods" because it is a comedy with little marketing. And what the heck happened to "Bandslam"? Yeah, it didn't even crack the top 10.
Can "District 9" stay on top next weekend or will Quentin Tarantino's new movie win it all?

'District 9' Director Neill Blomkamp Interview
First Showing had the chance to sit down and talk with Neill Blomkamp, the man behind the upcoming sci-fi film "District 9" that hits theaters this weekend.
He talks about everything from how the film came together, the five months he spent working on the "Halo" movie with Peter Jackson, how they pulled off all of the visual effects, both practical and CGI, and how the story developed over time. There are a few spoilers, but nothing big, so don't worry!
"District 9" will hopefully do well so Blomkamp can get back to work on "Halo."
More news to come! Catch ya' later!

9 Orphan $3.7 M

"G.I. Joe" dominated over the weekend which now makes a sequel very likely. As for "Julie and Julia," it has a long way to go to catch up to Meryl Streep's previous film, "Mamma Mia" (made $600 m worldwide).
Four films fell more than 50 percent this weekend. "Harry Potter 6," "Funny People," "Orphan" and "Aliens in the Attic." A tough month for these films.
"Orphan" and "500 Days of Summer" are close. "500 Days" may wind up actually being No. 9, but we won't know until the final numbers are in from the weekend. These are just estimates.

New 'District 9' Trailer
The marketing machine is now running on full steam for the upcoming Peter Jackson-Neill Blomkamp sci-fi film, "District 9," as we near the release of the sci-fi doc-style film. The first full length trailers debuted back in May alongside "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and since then we’ve been subject to a multitude of viral marketing for the movie.
The brand new trailer for "District 9" that will be in theaters this weekend attached to Sacha Baren Cohen’s "Bruno" has come online. It maintains all the intriguing mystery elements of the first trailer and extremely upped the ante. We not only get to see tons of action but also the style the film actually employs, the main character, crazy new alien technology and even some good ol’ alien vs. human combat.
"District 9" hits theaters August 14.

Alternate District 9 Trailer
"District 9" released a trailer last week that left many wanting more. Now the same trailer has been re-released, but this time the alien's face is not blurred out and there are subtitles for what it is saying.
It delivers more of a needed impact.
The Neill Blomkamp directed and Peter Jackson produced sci-fi feature is set in a fictional world where extraterrestrials have become refugees in South Africa. The film is set for an August 14 release and outside of knowing it expands on Blomkamp’s previous short film (watch that here) very little else is known about the film. Perhaps this new element to the trailer will help you out some.

In a recent article from Rolling Stone, both Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp spoke about the film.
Blomkamp explains where the idea for "District 9" (and his short film "Alive in Joburg") originally came from: "I was a science-fiction nut when I was growing up in Johannesburg. I just wanted to see that kind of imagery in a third world setting with the complex political history of South Africa."
Jackson explains the backstory behind what we're seeing in the trailer, to answer at least a few questions. "These aliens arrived 20 years ago in a dead, derelict mothership, which hovers above Johannesburg. It's enormous, like the size of 10 football fields. The aliens have ended up in a Soweto-style township beneath the ship. It's clear that they're not really integrating into society. They like to scavenge things, rip up train tracks. So the authorities shift them 200 miles away, into the African belt. They've built a concentration camp." And of course, that's when things get crazy. "The resident's of Joburg want them gone.
"The film has almost a disregard for visual effects. Like, the aliens are so mundane and so part of the geography that you don't really focus on them at all," which is what makes this so unique. "Neill has built these teasing glimpses of alien culture, like gangs that spring up among them. Part of the fun is learning how the alien society has taken its lead from Earth society and from its own original thoughts. The film has this documentary rawness to it. It's original, which is good, because the film industry today only wants to remake every 70's TV show and superhero graphic novel. 'District 9' is not your typical summer film."
