The last time anything was reported on the "Bioshock" movie was it being put on hold because of money troubles. Universal Pictures took a look at the budget, and decided to pull the plug in the pre-production stages, letting staff go until they and the then-director Gore Verbinski could figure out a way to do the movie without it costing as much.
And it looks like they’ve done just that, as well as finding a replacement director for Verbinski in the form of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who you’ll probably know best for co-writing and directing "28 Weeks Later." He is in talks to direct from a script written by John Logan ("Gladiator," "The Last Samurai").
According to Variety, Universal stopped "Bioshock" in April "because the budget rose to $160 million and the studio needed it to cost less." They claimed they just wanted Verbinski to shoot overseas (where it would cost less), but he wasn't able to since he’s directing the animated film "Rango." The studio went after Fresnadillo instead. Take-Two Interactive, who developed the game and has final approval on the director, approved Fresnadillo and now here we are. This is kind of surprising news, and something that’s bound to be disappointing news for Verbinski, who a few months ago turned down directing "Pirates of the Carribean 4" in order to focus on "Bioshock." Now it appears he’ll just be producing, which is still a big commitment, but definitely not the one he had in mind originally.
What do you think of the possible new director of the "Bioshock" movie? Do you think he’s a good fit or should they go with someone who’s got more experience?
"Bioshock" is currently in the development stages and doesn’t have a scheduled release date as of yet.
PREACHER Coming Soon had a very brief chat with Sam Mendes where it was asked how the 66-issue series (not including the specials) would be covered in one (or more) movie(s):
“Oh, he wouldn’t do the entire series in one movie. It would be impossible to do all nine volumes in one movie, that would be one long movie, and it wouldn’t do justice of it. It will not attempt to do all of it, but there’s so much wonderful stuff that I wouldn’t know what to leave out.”
"Preacher" is based on the successful mid-nineties Vertigo comic series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and tells the story of Reverend Jesse Custer who unwittingly becomes host to an angel-demon hybrid entity known as Genesis. Due to the entity’s split-nature of pure good and evil, Genesis is powerful enough to rival God himself. The plots follows Custer on his adventure discovering who he is and what he can do as he hunts down God who abandoned Heaven as Genesis was born.
I still think it would have been awesome as an episodic series on HBO.
DEADPOOL Back in May, it was confirmed that Fox is moving forward with a "Deadpool" spin-off starring Ryan Reynolds. We heard plenty off-and-on from Reynolds during "Wolverine's" release about the possibility of a "Deadpool" spin-off, but now HitFix has another brief quote from Reynolds after its official announcement, and it sounds like it's moving along fairly quickly. But will any of this hold up?
"Well, I'm intimately involved with it. We're just trying to break a story right now and figure out who the villain is going to be and all that stuff. But, it's going to be just like the comic books. I'm gonna have a messed up face and you may see some flashbacks of Wade earlier in his life, but primarily what you see is what you get in the comics and that's the goal. And there is no better place to draw material from then the comics which are incredible."
I think Reynolds will be a great Wade Wilson/ Deadpool and I don't know how they are going to relate the film to "Wolverine." I just don't trust Fox with comic book adaptions anymore. I just don't.
BARBARELLA Back in May, Rodriguez explained to MTV News that his "Barbarella" remake was dead in the water because the only way he could get the funding he needed was to move the production to Germany, which he didn't want to do. However, word is that "Legally Blonde" director Rob Luketic is now working with Dino De Laurentiis' company (which owns the rights to the property) to develop the movie with a different studio (instead of Universal).
"It will be a big intergalactic adventure with a sexy twist," an insider at EW said.
I think Rodriguez would have made the remake awesome. Luketic better not plan on making it some kind of romantic comedy.
BIOSHOCK Gore Verbinski spoke with the LA Times recently and when asked about "BioShock," admitted that with halt in production and Universal's desire to move the entire project outside of the US to cut costs, he isn't sure if he can, or wants, do it anymore.
"There's a great script and a really interesting cast," he said." It really comes down to the financial model now. Big movies are just not being shot in the States. I'm weighing whether I can physically go the U.K. or Australia or one of those other places with a tax rebate for a year-and-a-half."
I think Verbinski would have had a wonderful vision for this film, but alas, he is an expensive director ("Pirates of the Caribbean 3" is one of the most expensive movies ever made).
WHERE'S WALDO Universal has picked up the movie rights to the popular children's books series "Where's Waldo?" from Classic Media with the aim of making a live-action family movie. No word on a writer or director yet, only a producer - Chris Meledandri.
According to Variety, "Universal Pictures has put the brakes on 'Bioshock,' the Gore Verbinski-directed live action adaptation of the bestselling Take-Two Interactive video game. The picture was in pre-production, but the studio has halted that effort--and let some production staff go--as Universal and Verbinski figure out a way to make the film at a more reasonable budget.
Sources said that the John Logan-scripted picture was gearing up to shoot in Los Angeles, but that changed when the budget rose to the vicinity of $160 million. Universal and Verbinski are looking at alternatives like shooting in London as a way to pare costs. The plotline takes place in the underwater city Rapture, where a pilot crash-lands near a secret entrance and becomes involved in a power struggle.
'We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit,' Verbinski said. 'We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern.'
Verbinski and sources at the studio say they are determined to make the pic. Indeed, Verbinski bowed out of directing a fourth installment of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' so that he could direct 'Bioshock' and produce under his Blind Wink banner.
All parties vow that 'Bioshock' will not become another 'Halo,' the live action adaptation of the Microsoft game that was going to be turned into a film by Universal and Fox until both studios got cold feet and canceled the deal over budget fears."
Universal should have really expected this since Verbinski made the most expensive film ever made.

According to Variety, "It's no longer a pirate's life for Gore Verbinski.
After spending the better part of the last six years directing the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' trilogy, which grossed $2.6 billion worldwide, Verbinski has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he will not helm a fourth installment that's expected to set sail in 2010 with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Sequel is in development but not yet greenlit. It's unknown how Verbinski's ankling will affect the pic's schedule.
Verbinski will instead focus on other projects that include 'Bioshock,' a Universal Pictures adaptation of the bestselling video game that has a John Logan script and is likely to be Verbinski's next film as a director.
'I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team,' Verbinski said. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.'"
That pretty much sums up this bit of news. Verbinski is moving on and a fresh perspective will be brought to eh "Pirates" franchise.
"Pirates of the Caribbean 4" will reportedly be about Sparrow (Johnny Depp) meeting up with Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in the newly-founded New Orleans, where they embark on a quest to find the Fountain of Youth. Rush is interested in returning as is Bill Nighy, who played the evil, tentacle-faced Davy Jones (though I don't know how that will work out, didn't he die?).
