Fourth 'Twilight' Film Will be Split in Two

Money talks in Hollywood and Summit Entertainment will be following in the path of "The Hobbit" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by bringing "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" in two parts.

That’s right folks, "The Twilight Saga" will stand at least five films strong.

One of the hurdle’s in making this happen is bringing back all of the key cast members since they were only contracted for four movies (that and re-negotiating with Meyer). We can assume that they’ll each be getting massive paydays for this but Summit doesn’t care; they can make these films fast and cheap and make a ton of cash very easily to pay them. Heck, "New Moon" broke the records for largest single-day sales and Friday opening.

Melissa Rosenberg has been working on the script for "Breaking Dawn" and now must work on making two, with the first having some sort of appropriate semi-conclusion or cliffhanger/lead-in into part two.

The movies will be shot back-to-back in October for the obvious reasons of saving time and money and getting them out as fast as possible. Summit is apparently looking for a “high-end” director to conclude the series so don’t expect directors of any of the previous installments to return.

The question that still remains for Summit to answer is who will be directing the close of the series. No hints at any possibilities yet, but they are said to be looking at "high-end" directors.

I have to say that I'm looking forward to the end of "The Twilight Saga," not simply because it will be over and we can stop hearing about it (at least until they reboot it in a couple years), but rather because I hear the final book is absolutely nuts and practically adaptation repellent, and I can't wait to see what a disaster it will be.

A major concern in adapting "Breaking Dawn" is the challenge of the novel's graphic and adult content. Here's some MAJOR SPOILERS as to what happens in the plot:

"Bella and Edward finally get married and can now have sex, however Edward is scared to do so because he is super strong and is afraid of hurting her. Eventually Bella wears him down and, believe it or not, is knocked unconscious and left badly bruised after their first session, which even leaves the headboard destroyed. She still goes back for seconds, gets knocked up (by an undead vampire) and the ensuing pregnancy becomes incredibly painful as a result of the speed the baby is growing as its powerful kicks break her ribs and sever her spine. This leads Edward to give Bella an emergency C-section with his teeth before turning her into a vampire to save her life with super-healing undead-vampire powers.

Sounds exciting right? Well, apparently Jacob, the werewolf played by Taylor Lautner, falls in love with Bella's baby (like actual love) and can't stand to be away from it and visits everyday. I have asked a friend if this last part is actually true because it is so ridiculous and she confirms saying they have a "connection" and Jacob gets extremely protective of Renesmee. Oh, did I forget to say that was the baby's name? It's okay, sounds about right doesn't it? Bella. Edward. Renesmee. Okay, maybe not. I guess they weren't looking in the big book of baby names for their little one."

You can stop laughing now.

Just how much of this will we see and who will step up to direct such insanity? Extreme camp like this could actually be entertaining and I'm sure we'll know soon enough as Summit has taken to churning these things out as fast as they can. "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" finished principal photography before "New Moon" even hit theaters and is already set for release on June 30. I know you just can't wait...

Summit’s only issue with their future plans of the "Twilight" franchise was the lack of source material to build from. This is one solution to get an extra feature out of it and after that it’ll be up to spin-offs.

Now that we know its two movies, the next step is to get both of them in 3D, right?

Expect both parts of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" to release in 2011.
"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" comes out June 30 of this summer.

Box Office results for the weekend!

1 Avatar$73.0 M

2 The Princess and the Frog $12.2 M

3 The Blind Side $10.0 M

4 Did You Hear About the Morgans?$7.0 M

5 The Twilight Saga: New Moon $4.3 M

6 Invictus $4.1 M

7 Disney's A Christmas Carol $3.4 M

8 Up in the Air$3.1 M

9 Brothers $2.6 M

10 Old Dogs $2.2 M

James Cameron's "Avatar" cost somewhere around $300 million to make and market. There were big expectations from Fox about how it would do its opening weekend. And how did it do? Not so great.

$73 million domestically isn't exactly something to high five each over but it did make a killing at $159 million overseas. So far it has earned $232 million dollars worldwide. And with the east coast having been snowed in, expect numbers to be strong next weekend when the East Coast finally gets to check it out and others enjoy a repeat viewing.

"The Princess and the Frog" dropped over 50 percent, which is bad news for people who wish to see another hand-drawn 2D film in the future. Yes, it will rebound a little over Christmas… but the film needs more good word of mouth to stay strong over its $105 M budget.

"The Blind Side" fell the least of the wide releases and has made nearly $165 M domestically. It only needs another $13 M to crack the top ten of 2009 (domestically) — seems like a sure thing.

"Did You Hear About the Morgans" is another formulaic rom-com that most likely came out while better films are in theaters. And "New Moon" is only $3 M away from passing "The Hangover" for fourth place in domestic gross for this year.

Other films are petering out into the world of DVD/Blu-ray land. But what can we expect of Christmas weekend? Will "Avatar" remain on top or will "Sherlock Holmes" knock it down? Or will the kids win out the holiday weekend with "Chipmunks 2"?

10 Everybody's Fine $4.0 M

In its third week, "The Blind Side" managed to take over the box office and finally topple "New Moon" to become No. 1 over the weekend with $20.4 million. So far it has earned $129 million domestically (a hit for Warner Bros.), but "New Moon" has earned almost $500 million dollars worldwide. Oh the power of teen angst.

"Brothers" had a decent debut but for being so depressive might not survive for very long. "Everybody's Fine" and "Armored" pretty much tanked while ""Ninja Assassin" and "Planet 51" dropped miserably. Other films will keep petering out, but expect "2012" and "A Christmas Carol" to probably be in the lower numbers next weekend.

Everybody's Fine - A widower (De Niro) takes an impromptu road trip in order to reconnect with his grown children, only to discover that his family members are living far from perfect lives.

"New Moon" almost lost the holiday weekend as "The Blind Side" hit from...well...the blind side. But the vampire/werewolf romance flick stayed on top, but ended up falling over 70 percent from last weekend. Still, it is just under $475 million worldwide on a projected budget of only $50 million.

"The Blind Side" improved its numbers from last weekend, as did "A Christmas Carol." But "Old Dogs" and "Ninja Assassin" fell through the ranks. Heck, "The Road" didn't even make it on the Top 10 list.

Can "New Moon" stay on top for three weekends in a row or will another film take its place? If it does fall, what film do you think will win the weekend?

As I previously posted, "New Moon" shattered lots of opening day records, but it has settled in third place for highest grossing weekend (it sits behind "Dark Knight" and "Spider-Man 3").

Dang...that means "New Moon" beat out the opening weekend of "Transformers 2" by $32 million. This is a very high number for a film not coming out over the summer.

*GASP* But "Eclipse" does...

To those of you who hate the "Twilight" franchise and want to decry this as some sort of referendum on pop culture: I reject your argument. The film is probably excellent for those who read and enjoyed the books. It wasn't fun for anyone that hadn't.

Seeing as how I am not a fan of the books, I just say that the movie is good for people who are. And since I know someone who has seen it three times already...well...yeah...

"The Blind Side" actually opened very well and I think might be Sandra Bullocks best opening for any of her films. I will have to check the numbers on that fact.

Other films fill the rest of the slots, with "2012" still causing destruction and "Planet 51" pulling in the little kiddies.

What about next weekend? Will the vampire/werewolf/human love triangle conquer all or will it plummet, letting other films take the spotlight? We'll have to wait and see.

'New Moon' Beats 'Dark Knight' For Opening Day Record

There were no early bedtimes for Twihards as the second film in the "Twilight" series, "New Moon," opened at midnight on Thursday.

The hysterically-anticipated sequel was greeted by its largely female audience with screams, cheers and tears as they flocked to see the movie. Some girls reportedly clutched handbags rattling with bottles of prescription tranquillizers so they could make it through the film without uncontrollable frenzy or fainting fits.

And the fans' dedication paid off. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" proved to be more of an eclipse in its theatrical debut, breaking two box office records before this weekend is even over.

According to reports for the U.S. box office, the vampire romance set a new record for a midnight opening, taking $26.27 million and beating "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince"'s $22.2 million from July 15, which had itself beat the previous record set by "The Dark Knight"'s $18.4 million from July 18 last year.

The film's Friday performance (including the Thursday midnight showings that went into the early hours of Friday) went on to take the record for best opening day with $72.7 million, beating "The Dark Knight" which had earned $67.2 million. The first "Twilight" only made $7 million at its midnight showings and $36 million on its first day.

The signs of a big success were there earlier, with Fandango selling more than ten tickets per second on its Web site on Friday, while MovieTickets.com said "New Moon" now held its record for the highest number of advance ticket sales.

MovieTickets.com said the film had snatched the No. 1 spot from "Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," surpassing blockbuster film franchises including "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" on its way to set the new record.

MovieTickets.com president Joel Cohen said: "By landing the No. 1 spot on our advance ticket sellers list, 'New Moon' has broken a record that has stood unchallenged for almost five years.

"While this achievement is significant, it comes as little surprise considering the film's dedicated fanbase and the growing trend of purchasing advance tickets online for highly anticipated films such as the 'Twilight' series."

What do you think of the box-office success of the "Twilight" films so far and what do you expect from next year’s installment?

Directed by Chris Weitz, "New Moon" stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and Ashley Greene – it’s playing everywhere currently. "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" opens June 30, 2010 and is directed by David Slade.

'New Moon' Breaks Fandago Records

Even though there are still 5 more days before Summit Entertainmnent's vampire pic "New Moon," based on Stephenie Meyer's bestselling book, hits theaters on November 20, the film has already leaped over previous record-holders to become the top-selling pre-release title in Fandango's 10-year history. The new record for Fandango's fastest-selling film was set on Saturday night after 8:00 PM.

The Top 5 Advance Ticket-Sellers on Fandango are now as follows:
1. New Moon (2009)
2. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
4. The Dark Knight (2008)
5. Twilight (2008)

The latest chapter of "The Twilight Saga" is currently accounting for 86% of weekly ticket sales on Fandango, the nation's leading movie ticketing destination. Thousands of Thursday night midnight showtimes for "New Moon" are already sold out across the country. Yet "New Moon" tickets continue to be available. To meet the fan demand, the nation's top theater owners are regularly posting brand new showtimes on additional screens.

"For many fans, it's the year's most anticipated film event," Fandango COO Rick Butler said. "Ever since tickets went on sale in September, it's been among our top five weekly ticket-sellers, as New Moon has a strong pull on audiences. We're seeing a higher-than-usual number of tickets per transaction for this film, suggesting that moviegoers will show up en masse at theaters this weekend with their friends and family."

According to a recent Fandango survey of 2,000+ "New Moon" ticket-buyers:
-- 98% say the action in "New Moon" looks better than the action in "Twilight"
-- 72% plan to see the movie with a group of three friends/ or more.
-- 52% of survey respondents say they dream about vampires.
-- 22% are mothers and daughters planning to see "New Moon" together
-- 10% plan to show up at the theater dressed as the saga characters.

That middle one astonishes me. Over half of the people who bought tickets for "New Moon"'s Thursday night showing dream about vampires. I mean, yeah, guys dream about teenage girls, but they don't dress up like them or want to be them.
Now the question is whether "New Moon" can break through to the top 100 grossing movies of all time. "Twilight" wasn't able to grab a spot on the list, making only $383 million, while the lowest spot is "Die Another Day" with $432 mil. But the first of the series also wasn't trouncing beloved flicks like "The Dark Knight."

What do you think will happen when the werewolves and vampires descend upon the theaters this week? Wait...we already know it will be a box office success.

The end of the world proved to be a massive attraction for moviegoers as Roland Emmerich's "2012" opened this weekend with an earth-shattering $225 million at the worldwide box office.

Ticket sales in the US and Canada brought in $65 million, with a foreign tally of $160 million from 105 countries.

Sony's Columbia Pictures said the film scored the highest worldwide opening for an original film not based on an established franchise, brand or best-seller.

In global terms, it ranks No. 9 for film openings, behind (from No. 1-8) "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "Spider-Man 3," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and "The Da Vinci Code."

It surpassed June's worldwide opening for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" but not that film's North American opening of $109 million.

The foreign box office opening for "2012" is the fifth highest of all time. The North American box office opening is marginally below the $68 million for Emmerich's 2004 disaster flick "The Day After Tomorrow," but beat the American debuts of all other movies in the disaster genre including the filmmaker's "Independence Day" from 1996 and "Godzilla" from 1998.

Other films are just surviving the earthquakes and floods. They made some money while worrying about what happens when it really is the year 2012.

'New Moon' Clip

I have no idea what is happening in this clip, but I admit the wolf effects are really awesome. Will they make me see the movie? Eh...

After the events of "Twilight," Edward leaves Bella who then forms a relationship with childhood friend Jacob. But there is something about Jacob that she doesn't know (I think you pretty much know what it is from the clip above).

Eclipse Director

"Twilight" made it big time in the box office and "New Moon" will surely do the same. While "Twilight" was the biggest opening ever for a female director, the lovely people over at Summit decided to get a man to do the sequel.

And also for the third film in the franchise, "Eclipse."

Erik Feig, Summit Entertainment’s President of Production officially announced that David Slade ("30 Days of Night," "Hard Candy") has been hired to helm "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

Some snippets from the official press release.

Meyer stated, “I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing 'Eclipse.' He’s a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we’ve been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I’m so happy that 'Eclipse' will be carrying on with that tradition.”

Feig said, “Stephenie Meyer’s 'Eclipse' is a muscular, rich, vivid book and we at Summit looked long and hard for a director who could do it justice. We believe we have found that talent in David Slade, a director who has been able to create complex, visually arresting worlds. We cannot wait to see the 'Eclipse' he brings to life and brings to the fans eagerly awaiting its arrival in summer of 2010.”

In 'Eclipse,' Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life."

I find it funny that they chose the director of "30 Days of Night," another vampire movie but one very different from the "Twilight" franchise.

I am very sorry to "Twilight" fans when I say this but that little synopsis from the press release makes "Eclipse" sounds like a terrible vampire/werewolf movie. Then again, the "Twilight" franchise isn't a vampire/werewolf series (go watch "Underworld" for that), it is a romance tale with vamps and werewolves because obviously tween girls have been fawning over those creatures for ages (I know people who watch "Interview With a Vampire" just because Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Tom Cruise are vampires).

Anyway, I also hear all the books kill brain cells for people who actually read books besides "Twilight" People who only read "Twilight" think it is the bomb. People who read literature think it is actually bad writing. I have seen these things with my own two eyes. And this is only my opinion.
You can still like "Twilight." I'm not stopping you.

Excuse my rant.

Movie News Mash 12

Terminator Salvation

McG spoke to MTV News on a possible new trilogy for the "Terminator" franchise.

“If we have good fortune we have indeed planned out two more ‘Terminator’ pictures,” explained the director, keeping his fingers crossed that “Salvation” opens strongly on May 21st. “There’s an arc of story [in the new sequels].”

This arc will be left open with the ending of “Salvation,” which will point to a “Terminator 5” film. “The ending is indeed elliptical,” McG said. ‘And it challenges the audience. It’s not a happy little bow of an ending at all. The ending is tough and requires reflection, and in some degrees it bifurcates the audience. You walk back to the car and one person thinks it means this, and the other person thinks it means that.”

“I’m working on ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ out of Disney,” he said of the update of the Jules Verne tale. “I’m prepping that.”

But if “Salvation” is a big enough hit, those other movies might have to wait until McG and Christian Bale reunite for the fifth “Terminator” flick.

“I would never presume there would be another picture - that is up to the audience,” he explained. “But if the audience jumps up and likes it and wants another one, Christian and I have been talking about it and we’ll see what happens.”

“You have to see how the film is received,” McG added. “And that’s in the hands of the fans.”

New Moon

According to The Geek Files, "Filming has today started on Summit Entertainment's 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon,' the studio has announced.

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner reprise their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black. Chris Weitz ('The Golden Compass,' 'About a Boy') is directing and filming is taking place in Vancouver and Tuscany.

Also rejoining the movie are Ashley Greene as Alice, Peter Facinelli as Carlisle, Elizabeth Reaser as Esme, Kellan Lutz as Emmett, Nikki Reed as Rosalie, Jackson Rathbone as Jasper, Edi Gathegi as Laurent, Rachelle Lafevre as Victoria and Billy Burke as Charlie Swan.

New characters include the Volturi, a coven of law-enforcing vampires. Charlie Bewley is Demetri, Jamie Campbell Bower is Caius, Daniel Cudmore - who played steel-skinned mutant Colossus in the 'X-Men' movies - plays Felix, Christopher Heyerdahl is Marcus, Dakota Fanning plays Jane, a high ranking and powerful Volturi member and Cameron Bright is Alec, her brother.

Noot Seer plays Volturi member Heidi, Michael Sheen plays Aro, the Volturi leader, Graham Greene appears as Harry Clearwater, Quileute tribal leader and old friend of Bella's father Charlie and Tinsel Korey is Emily, the fiancé of Sam Uley.

In 'New Moon', Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love Edward (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and she finds her loyalties tested."

Green Lantern

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Warner Bros. and DC Comics' next big-budget feature, 'Green Lantern,' will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees said Thursday.

Director Martin Campbell will be at the helm of the comic book's big-screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Donald Deline will produce with a reported budget of $150 million.

Rees said the film will create about 500 jobs and include a 'substantial investment' in digital effects work in Australia.

'Green Lantern' should be eligible to receive the Australian federal government's 15 percent location rebate on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government to bring the project to Fox. New South Wales outbid interstate rivals Victoria and Queensland for the work.

'The decision by Warner Bros. to locate the production in New South Wales is tangible evidence that having a competitive incentive scheme in place returns positive results,' Fox Studios Australia CEO Nancy Romano said.

Preproduction on 'Green Lantern' is set to begin in July, and filming is scheduled to start in November. Warners is aiming to release the film in December 2010."

Ready for New Moon

Are you ready for "New Moon," the sequel to the box office smash "Twilight?"

Robert Pattinson, better known as brooding vampire Edward Cullen, says fans of the first film who haven't read the second book should be expecting something different.

"The book of 'New Moon,' the majority of it is incredibly depressing," Pattinson told Reuters. "Obviously 'Twilight' was about finding first love and the difficulties of that, but 'New Moon' is really about loss and reconciliation, but the reconciliation isn't completely full.

"It's a strange story to have for a market that, I guess, wants to see a love story," he said.

The cast and crew of the new film are currently in Vancouver, Canada preparing to start shooting this week.

"It's turned into this crazy situation. I guess it has become a sort of phenomenon now which I really, really didn't expect," Pattinson said of the success of "Twilight" and his own fan base of teenage girls.

So "Twilight" fans, "New Moon" comes out Nov. 20. Are you ready?

Wolf Pack for New Moon

According to Latino Review, "Summit Entertainment announced today that Native American/First Nation actors Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman have signed on to star as the members of the wolf pack in 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon.' In the film, the wolf pack defends humans against vampires although they have a tribal history intricately entwined with Edward Cullen and his family. The wolf pack members will join Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and fellow wolf pack member Taylor Lautner in the film directed by Chris Weitz which will be released domestically November 20, 2009.

In 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon,' Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested.

Each member of the wolf pack is of Native decent. Spencer is Lakota (Sioux), Pelletier is Cree-Metis, Meraz is Purepecha (Tarasco), Gordon is Hualapai, and Houseman, who was discovered at an open casting call, is Cree."

I had to take so much from the source since I know very little about "New Moon." There was a big discussion online the other day about which book series was better, "Harry Potter" or "Twilight"
"Harry Potter" won big time.
"New Moon" hits theaters Nov. 20, 2009.

New New Moon News

This in from Stephanie Meyer's website, StephanieMeyer.com, about the casting of Jacob Black in "New Moon."

"Good news about New Moon from director Chris Weitz:

I'm very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he's doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer.

The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film.

very best

Chris Weitz

I'd just like to add that I was very much a part of this decision. My first priority was always what was best for New Moon—what was going to give us the best possible movie. I'm truly thrilled that Taylor was the one who proved to the director, to Summit, and to me that he is the best possible Jacob we could have. And I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he's going to bring to Jacob's character this year.

- Steph"

Hopes that makes you happy "Twilight" fans!

New Moon Director

Summit has just announced in a press release the new director for "New Moon."

Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production, said in the release, "We love Stephenie Meyer’s fantastic 'Twilight' series. Thinking long and hard about how to turn New Moon into the amazing movie we know it will be, and working with Stephenie Meyer to find the right candidate, we are thrilled to announce Chris Weitz as director of the film. Chris very much understands the world of New Moon and has the skill set required to bring the book to glorious life as a movie. We think he will be an excellent steward of Stephenie Meyer’s vision.”

Weitz's other films that he directed include "American Pie," "About a Boy" and "The Golden Compass."

“I am honored to have been entrusted with shepherding 'New Moon' from the page to the screen,” said Weitz. “The extraordinary world that Stephenie has created has millions of fans, and it will be my duty to protect on their behalf the characters, themes and story they love. This is not a task to be taken lightly, and I will put every effort into realizing a beautiful film to stand alongside a beautiful book.”

According to Rope of Silicon, "In 'New Moon,' Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested. Production on 'New Moon' is scheduled to begin in the coming months and the studio is planning to release the film towards the end of 2009 or early 2010 with rumors pointing to a November 20, 2009 release."

Do you believe that Weitz is the right director for "New Moon?" Was it right to switch from a female director to a male director?

New Moon

"Twilight" sequel "New Moon" has been greenlit and is ready to be made....for next year already!

Check out this article by Entertainment Weekly!

"Summit Entertainment has tentatively slated Nov. 20, 2009, as the release date for New Moon, the Twilight sequel, which means any director who signs on to replace Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has to be in Vancouver by Dec. 15 to begin 12 weeks of preproduction before a mid-March start date. Reports have speculated that Hardwicke was fired for being difficult on set, but sources close to her suggest Summit's aggressive production schedule turned her off. 'She'd love to do the sequel if she could do it better than Twilight,' says one. 'It became clear that Summit didn’t have those same priorities.'

Another of Hardwicke’s primary concerns was that hunky vampire Edward remains MIA throughout New Moon’s middle portion. In her own opening-weekend interview, she told EW, 'You have to get the chemistry as strong between Jacob and Bella as it was between Bella and Edward. You also have to do something with that arc: She’s in love with somebody, he disappears, she falls in love with someone else, and the first guy comes back. Movies like Pearl Harbor have tried it. It absolutely didn’t work.'

With or without Hardwicke, Summit faces other snags. Two sources tell EW the studio doesn’t want to rehire baby-faced Taylor Lautner (pictured) as Jacob, though Lautner’s agent has apparently reached out to the imaging company behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in an attempt to demonstrate to Summit how a digitally bulked-up Lautner could work. (Summit says it won’t make a decision until a new filmmaker is on board.) There’s also the matter of finding a cast of Native American actors to play Jacob’s werewolf clan — a difficult challenge Hardwicke was also faced with before settling on Lautner, who isn’t completely Native American. And with a slightly increased budget of $50 million — much of which is assumed will go to leads asking for heftier paydays, location shoots in Italy, and ramped-up F/X — Summit will have to scrimp somewhere."

So what are your thoughts on "New Moon" and this vamped up production schedule?
