Movie News Rush 3

I'm starting to think that this Movie News Rush thing may be the only kind of posting on here for some time since I am literally swamped with work until after the first week in June. And it's summer and I'm not in school - so I kind of wish I was back in school. Then I wouldn't be so darn busy (that's kind of twisted).

Release Dates

The news - here are some new release dates for some films I've been talking about on this blog.

"Mission Impossible IV" - December 16, 2011
"Rise of the Apes" - June 24, 2011
"Ice Age: Continental Drift 3D" - July 13th, 2012

"Mission Impossible IV"

The news - while on the subject of the fourth "Mission Impossible" film, Brad Bird has been confirmed as director. Interesting choice since he has never done a live-action film before (he directed "The Iron Giant," "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille."

"Captain America: The First Avenger"

The news - besides the title being flipped, another villain has been added. Toby Jones ("The Mist," "W.") will play Arnim Zola, a genetic engineer who created clones and various other monstrosities for the Nazis. He also captured his own mental self, inserting it into a robot, and survived the war.

Box Office results for the weekend!

1 Paranormal Activity $22.0 M

2 Saw VI $14.8 M

3 Where the Wild Things Are $14.4 M

4 Law Abiding Citizen $12.7 M

5 Couples Retreat $11.0 M

6 Astro Boy $7.0 M

7 The Stepfather $6.5 M

8 Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant$6.3 M

9 Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs $5.6 M

10 Zombieland $4.3 M

Wow. This is the fifth week that "Paranormal Activity" has been out in movie theaters and it finally got the No. 1 spot (something that "Blair Witch" never did). "Saw VI got owned, but if it wasn't for "Paranormal," it might have done as well as the other films in the franchise. Still expect a "Saw VII" next year though.

There were a couple bombs this weekend. "Astro Boy" failed along with "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" and "Amelia" (which is only a little behind "Zombieland" at No. 11).

Can "Paranormal" keep next weekend or will Michael Jackson's return from the dead win it all?

Summer Movies of '09

This is a follow-up to my very first post from last year and to review most of the films I saw this past summer. Also, coincidentally, this is post No. 1,000. Sweet.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - This is the third film in the "Ice Age" franchise and another film thrown into the 3-D mix. I enjoyed the first film and can honestly say the I don't remember much of the second (I just remember it not being that great). This film, while taking the plot straight from "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with some "Moby Dick," is actually entertaining at some points (I chalk all the real humor to the new character Buck, voiced by Simon Pegg). Also noticed there was a lot more Scrat (the squirrel creature who loves nuts) in this film than in the others. Guess the filmmakers realized he was a popular character.
6.8/10

District 9 - This is one good film. It is unique and amazingly made for its low budget. Even the documentary style of the film isn't too bad because the perspective switches from that to narrative cinema several times throughout the movie (especially during the awesome gunfight at the climax). If you are any kind of sci fi fan this is a must see.
8.8/10

(500) Days of Summer - This is not a romantic comedy. This is not a chick flick. It is a story about life, love and relationships. The film jumps around a lot over the course of the 500 days, but first time director Marc Webb is able to make the story understandable to the audience. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are just great actors and have very good chemistry in this film. If you're tired of those giant Hollywood blockbuster films and just want to relax, this is the perfect movie for you. There is even a song and dance number (I loved it even though I am not a fan of musicals).
8.5/10

Inglourious Basterds - Quentin Tarantino is a fantastic director and his newest film fits in perfect with all his others. Why? Because of the amazing dialogue. Though "Death Proof" is not high on my list of Tarantino films (besides the car chase scene it was all dialogue), "Basterds" has a good enough blend between dialogue and action to satisfy the audience. Not to mention that almost all the dialogue is used to create tension in many of the scenes so you can't look away. A story well told in Nazi occupied France.
8.3/10

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - I did not like the first "Transformers" film because I thought it could have been a lot better than it was. I did not have much hope for this next film and that is a good thing because now I am just pissed off at Hollywood. I'm sorry, but special effects do not make a movie. Yes, the effects in the film are phenomenal. But the plot, acting and pretty much everything else was like nails on a chalkboard. Right now I can still not even explain what happened in the film. Again, this movie could have been so great (giant freaking robots, c'mon), but everything just fell through. Doesn't matter though because it has made tones of money and I know a third film will be coming out. If they can get rid of the stupid humor in the next one, so many people will like it (and parents will actually want to bring their kids to see it too).
5.3/10

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Holy cow, they are getting older. Things are finally coming to a head in the Harry Potter franchise as the next two films will deliver the final book of the series. As for this sixth installment, it mixes the ever-present darkness with lots of light humor about relationships. A fine addition to the franchise but it is merely a stepping stone to the grand finale that will be the "Deathly Hollows."
7.3/10

G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra - I was expecting this film to be along the line of "Transformers" and suck, but it actually turned out to be an entertaining popcorn flick. The acting and plot (though still not the best) were way better in "G.I. Joe" than "Transformers" (but the latter film wins with tons better special effects). The constant action will keep you entertained instead of having a few action scenes spread out with a bunch of stupidity. Yo' Joe!
6.5/10

Angels and Demons - I thought this book was better than "The Da Vinci Code" and I came up with the same result with the films. While I believe the movie would have been better if it had stuck more to the book (the villain was entirely changed), it still had a better story and more action than "Da Vinci Code."
6.3/10

Gamer - A film with an interesting concept but failed to really deliver. The movie is more like a really geeky teenager's dream of the future. The concept seemed really cool and I was hoping to see how the interactions worked between the people being controlled and the people doing the controlling, but sadly that was left out to capitalize on the crazy action and sexuality. Too bad since the film is pretty short and the payoff at the end isn't that great.
6.0/10

G-Force - A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world.

The Ugly Truth - A macho morning TV show correspondent (Butler) makes a bet with his love-challenged producer (Heigl): If his tips on how to land and keep a guy don't work, he'll quit the business. But while he coaches her through a fledgling romance, can he avoid falling for her, and vice versa?

Orphan - After their unborn baby dies, Kate and John Coleman (Farmiga and Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child as a hopeful way to bring some joy and normalcy into their lives. Box Office results for the weekend!

1 Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince $79.4 M

2 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $17.7 M

3 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $13.7 M

4 Bruno $8.3 M

5 The Hangover $8.3 M

6 The Proposal $8.2 M

7 Public Enemies $7.5 M

8 Up $3.1 M

9 My Sister's Keeper $2.8 M

10 I Love You Beth Cooper $2.6 M

"Harry Potter 6" has accumulated $200 million worldwide but still has a lot of work to do if it wants to crack that rumored 'billion' mark. I don't think it will make it.

"Ice Age 3" made a fair amount of money domestically, but over 73 percent of its gross has come from the foreign market which has helped it earn way more than "Up."

In fact, the only other film to have earned more money worldwide than "Ice Age 3" is "Transformers 2." Just goes to show people's taste in cinema...

As for "Bruno," it dipped 73 percent since last weekend. Word of mouth must have hurt this film badly. "The Hangover" is still doing well for its seventh week out, but it probably won't crack the top 10 films of the summer (counting for domestic earnings).

Other films are petering out to make way for another weekend to be dominated by a kid friendly film. Last year for Disney was all about Chihuahuas, but this year it is all about Guinea Pigs. Who will win the spot for the top? "Harry Potter 6" or "G-Force?"

Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News

Movies coming out this week!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - In his sixth year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter discovers even more about the evil Lord Voldemort's past, thanks to his mentor Dumbledore and mysterious textbook marked "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince." By the end of the year, nothing will ever be the same.

The Edge of Love
The Haunting in Connecticut

Box Office results for the weekend!

1 Brüno $30.4M

2 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $28.5M

3 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $24.2M

4 Public Enemies $14.1M

5 The Proposal $10.5M

6 The Hangover $9.93M

7 I Love You, Beth Cooper $5M

8 Up $4.66M

9 My Sister's Keeper $4.18M

10 Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian $1.52M

"Bruno" opened bigger than "Borat," but can it do better in the long run. The studios probably aren't that worried since the estimated budget for the film is only $42 million.

"Ice Age 3" is so far doing better than its predecessors, but I think that is due to lack of competition right now of movies out for kids. "Transformers 2" fell 42 percent since last weekend while "Public Enemies" fell even more and is probably not going to make enough money to cover its budget and marketing costs.

This was the third worst weekend of the summer according to the total of the top 10 from this weekend, but the summer isn't over yet.
Expect "Harry Potter 6" to rule next weekend.

Box Office results for the weekend!

1 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $42.3 M

2 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs$41.6 M

3 Public Enemies $25.2 M

4 The Proposal $12.8 M

5 The Hangover $11.2 M

6 Up $6.5 M

7 My Sister's Keeper $5.7 M

8 The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 $2.5 M

9 Year One $2.3 M

10 Night at the Museum: Night at the Smithsonian $2.0 M

"Ice Age 3" and "Transformers 2" really duked it out for the top spot for the weekend. "Ice Age 3" has made more money in the foreign market than domestically so far and "Transformers 2" has made almost $600 million worldwide now, making it the highest grossing film of the year (though it dropped 61 percent since last weekend).

"Public Enemies" opened well despite its rating and theme while "The Proposal" has cracked through the triple digits now. "The Hangover" has now made a hefty profit in its $265 worldwide earnings.

"Star Trek" has fallen out of the top ten now. It's a shame since it is better then some of the other movies there (but it has been there since May).

Next week I predict "Bruno" to be at the top. "Borat" opened at $26 million in 2006, so can it be topped?

Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2009

"In a survey conducted between August 8 and October 5, nearly 4,000 movie fans who had just purchased tickets at MovieTickets.com weighed in with their picks for the "most anticipated" films over the next 12 months.

MovieTickets.com consumers were asked to rank a list of upcoming films slated for release within the next year on a scale of 1-to-5, with 1 signifying they had little-to-no interest in seeing the film and a 5 meaning they had significant interest in seeing the film.

The Top 10 was: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Public Enemies
Angels & Demons
Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian
The Informant
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Taking of Pelham 123.

Among the key findings of the 'most anticipated' poll were that respondents ages 24 and under indicated that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was the film they were most interested in seeing; among 25 to 39-year-olds, X-Men Origins: Wolverine topped the list; and in the 40- to 59 and the 60-and-over category, Angels & Demons was No 1.

The top three films among males were X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian. Among females, the top three was: Angels & Demons, Public Enemies and Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian.

Gary Hiller, president of MovieTickets.com's Research and Analytics Division said: 'These polling results provide very early, valuable insight into comparative long-lead moviegoer awareness and interest levels.

'Marketing professionals, in particular, may find this data quite useful as it relates to the competitive release landscape over the next 12 months.'

In a 2007 MovieTickets.com poll on the same topic, consumers indicated their top-three most anticipated films to be: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Dark Knight and National Treasure: Book of Secrets."

What I have to say on this matter.
First of all, The Day the Earth Stood Still comes out in 2008 (and National Treasure 2 came out in 2007, not 2008). So I think there was a mix-up in the polling somewhere...
Next....Night at the Museum 2 and Ice Age 3? People...come on....do you know that Terminator Salvation, Watchmen, Star Trek, and Sherlock Holmes come out next year? I mean....Watchmen should at least be in that list. For crying out loud.
And to tell you the truth, three of those movies I haven't even heard of until right now. Now I need to go find out what Public Enemies, The Informant, and The Taking of Pelham 123 are.
