Lead Roles Cast in 'The Thing' Prequel

Heat Vision reports that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton will star in “The Thing,” Universal’s prequel on the shape-shifting alien who terrorizes a group of people in a remote facility.

The best-known version of the tale is the 1982 John Carpenter-Kurt Russell cult movie, which was a contemporary remake of 1951's "The Thing From Another World," directed by Howard Hawks. All take inspiration from a 1938 short story, "Who Goes There?" published in pulp mag Astounding.

This new film will tell the story of the scientists that initially found the being with Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring as a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When the unknown alien is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Joel Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

The role marks Winstead's first starring studio vehicle. She appeared in a bit part in Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" and was Bruce Willis' daughter in "Live Free or Die Hard." She caught Universal's eye with her work opposite Michael Cera in the studio's upcoming "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," where she plays love interest Ramona V. Flowers. Universal is releasing that movie Aug. 13.

Edgerton's credits include "Smokin' Aces," "King Arthur," "Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" (he played the bit role of young Owen Lars).

The film is already set for a March 15 start date in Toronto with Matthijs van Heijningen directing a script by "Battlestar Galactica" co-creator Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer, who co-wrote the upcoming "A Nightmare on Elm Street" remake.

While van Heijningen is a virtual unknown, the screenwriting team sounds good enough to make me curious as to how this will turn out. "The Thing" is a beloved classic by many and this prequek has a lot to live up to.

'The Thing' Prequel Being Rewritten

The prequel script written by Ronald D. Moore that was to take place prior to the events of the original "The Thing" was to be from the point of view of the Norweiginas and their encounter with the creature from outer space.

According to Bloody Disgusting, "We learned that Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have tapped Eric Heisserer to rewrite 'The Thing' prequel that was originally scripted by Ronald D. Moore. It was announced here yesterday that Heisserer also did some cleanup work on Wesley Strick's screenplay for 'A Nightmare on Elm Street.'"

So does this guy make rewrites for a profession?

Eric Heisserer responded to the news on his own official blog.

"They were quite fast on the draw, those folks at Bloody. Yes, Matthijs and I are hard at work with the very smart team at Strike on the prequel. We are all so much in love with Carpenter’s film, so protective of it, we’re doing all we can to avoid stepping on its toes. I jumped at this job because I hold the Carpenter adaptation to very high standards, and I knew it would be a challenge to create a comparable companion piece. Sort of a “Nobody better screw this up, especially me” mentality. Lucky for me, the people at Strike and the director have the same standards.

This is a 'from scratch' rewrite assignment for the most part, as was my work on A Nightmare on Elm Street. I can’t say any more on that. I have the highest respect for both Ron Moore and Wesley Strick."

No news on how much of a rewrite this will be. It is "from scratch" so it can be anything new or different.

The Thing Prequel

According to Bloody Disgusting, "This afternoon we got the working plot details for Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment's 'The Thing,' their supposed 'prequel' to John Carpenter's remake from 1982 that starred Kurt Russell and dealt with a shape-shifting creature from outer space that terrorizes researchers at an Antarctic facility."

The plot details go on to just describe the actual beginning of the film where a Norwegian research team flies a helicopter and tries to shoot a dog. The helicopter crashes and an American research team takes the dog in. The dog turns out to be a shape-shifting alien monster.
So apparently the prequel movie will be the story of the Norwegian group and will end with them crashing their helicopter, basically the ending of this movie will be the start of "The Thing."

Will the whole movie be in the Norwegian language then?
