Movies coming out this week!
G-Force - A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world.
The Ugly Truth - A macho morning TV show correspondent (Butler) makes a bet with his love-challenged producer (Heigl): If his tips on how to land and keep a guy don't work, he'll quit the business. But while he coaches her through a fledgling romance, can he avoid falling for her, and vice versa?
Orphan - After their unborn baby dies, Kate and John Coleman (Farmiga and Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child as a hopeful way to bring some joy and normalcy into their lives. Esther (Fuhrman), a 9-year-old orphan, captivates the couple, and comes home to live with them, though a strange sequence of events follows Esther's arrival, who's angelic façade might mask sinister intentions.

Box Office results for the weekend!
1 Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince $79.4 M
2 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $17.7 M
3 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $13.7 M
4 Bruno $8.3 M
5 The Hangover $8.3 M
6 The Proposal $8.2 M
7 Public Enemies $7.5 M
8 Up $3.1 M
9 My Sister's Keeper $2.8 M
10 I Love You Beth Cooper $2.6 M
"Harry Potter 6" has accumulated $200 million worldwide but still has a lot of work to do if it wants to crack that rumored 'billion' mark. I don't think it will make it.
"Ice Age 3" made a fair amount of money domestically, but over 73 percent of its gross has come from the foreign market which has helped it earn way more than "Up."
In fact, the only other film to have earned more money worldwide than "Ice Age 3" is "Transformers 2." Just goes to show people's taste in cinema...
As for "Bruno," it dipped 73 percent since last weekend. Word of mouth must have hurt this film badly. "The Hangover" is still doing well for its seventh week out, but it probably won't crack the top 10 films of the summer (counting for domestic earnings).
Other films are petering out to make way for another weekend to be dominated by a kid friendly film. Last year for Disney was all about Chihuahuas, but this year it is all about Guinea Pigs. Who will win the spot for the top? "Harry Potter 6" or "G-Force?"

Reviews From Spring Break
Spring Break was a blast and I was able to watch quite a few movies. Just getting back to school was pretty busy, but now it is the weekend and I can write up some of the reviews of movies I saw while over Spring Break last week.
Slumdog Millionaire - What makes this movie truly unique (besides winning eight Oscars including Best Picture) is that it correctly portrays life in India. Keep in mind there is a great plot that may be confusing for people who aren't used to being brought from present to past over and over. It definitely is worth a watch and has a happy dance number at the end!
8.5/10
Quantum of Solace - I still don't like the new Bond that is being done by Daniel Craig. Sean Connery is shaking his head somewhere after seeing this movie. "Casino Royale" was a pretty good action thriller but not a good Bond movie. "Quantum of Solace" is just action without anything else. I do not like the new Bond. I admit this and I want to go back to the cheesy gadgets and women with silly names and having Bond not be a pissed off vigilante anymore.
6.0/10
Changeling - Based on a story of a terrible police scandal against a woman (and just society against women in general in the 1920's), this film deals with the loss of a child and a mother's devotion to find him. Angelina Jolie shows off her acting skills in this movie and was nominated for Best Actress for her role in this film. It is a hard movie to watch not because it is bad, but because it is so good but also depressing.
7.5/10
Coraline - Some people just hate claymation films. "A Nightmare Before Christmas" was good, but never drew me in as a cult classic as many people I know swear it is THE movie. "Coraline" looks a whole lot better than "A Nightmare Before Christmas" and I think it has a better story to boot. I could see it being too scary for kids but I think that was a part of the director's intent. One of the last parts of the film kind of felt like a video game quest to me, searching for objects to complete her mission, but that was the only part I kind of shook my head at. Overall, a decent film.

Box Office results for the weekend!

3The Last House on the Left (2009)$14.6 M
4 Taken $6.6 M
5Tyler Perry's Madea Goes To Jail $5.1 M

7 Paul Blart: Mall Cop $3.1 M
8He's Just Not That into You $2.9 M
9Coraline $2.6 M
10Miss March $2.3 M
"Watchmen" can be considered a great movie while also being considered a commercial failure. The film was made with a large budget (well over $100 million) and in two weeks has made $86 million. It dropped almost 70 percent from the previous week.
Families needed to take kids to movies and "Watchmen" certainly isn't that film, so "Race to Witch Mountain" won the weekend simply for that family reason. "The Last House on the Left" did well considering it is another remake of a horror film.
All the other films are just petering out the month of March. "Miss March: itself failed in getting its audience, but I didn't expect it to do that well anyway.
What film will be No. 1 next weekend?

2 Taken $11.4 M
3 Coraline $11.0 M
4 He's Just Not That into You $8.5 M
5 Slumdog Millionaire$8.0 M

7 Confessions of a Shopaholic$7.0 M
8 Paul Blart: Mall Cop $7.0 M
9 Fired Up$6.0 M
10 The International $4.4 M
Tyler Perry makes bank again with his continuing series of films that I have not seen. But this is his biggest opening debut yet, so I say good job to him.
"Taken" stays at the top where it deserves to be among other films that are out right now.
No one wanted to see "Fired Up" and "Friday the 13th" dropped over 80 percent from what it made last weekend.
And winning eight Oscars should have "Slumdog Millionaire" staying in the top 10 for a few more weeks while people go to see it to see what all the buzz was about.
This week we a videogame adaptation starring Lana from "Smallville" and then the movie that teen girls will rush to. What do you think will become No. 1 next weekend?
Hint: There are more teen girls out there than you actually think there are.

"He's Just Not That Into You" exceeds as the latest in a series of chick flicks to be shown in these slow months in the beginning of the year, and it seems a lot of women out there will just flock to them. Then again...I am a male writer, so I could be biased, but at least I realize this while others do not.
"Taken" stays at the top too, only dropping 17 percent since last weekend. That is great since most films usually drop over 50 percent.
"Coraline" and "Pink Panther 2" both opened over the weekend and the clay made film did fairly well considering it might be too frightening for children. "Pink Panther 2" dropped 40 percent from the opening of the first film in the fracnhise.
The rest of the films are rehashes from previous weekends except for "Push," which is low on the numbers and might not survive into next weekend. "Slumdog Millionare" is at $118m on a budget of $15m, and this is before it is going to win Best Picture and get released on DVD. So yes, that means it is doing well. "Gran Torino" is still on the Top 10 since Jan. 9, which is over a month ago. Which means people like it, it is good and you should see it.
Next month, another chick flick, a thriller and a horror film. Take you picks for Valentine's Day weekend and find the results here!

"Taken," which has been out overseas for a while now, has come to America to kick some mall cop butt. For those that have seen this movie, know that "Taken" will come out on DVD with an extended cut.
All other films did mediocre for Super Bowl weekend. Next weekend is going to have a big influx of new movies, so the competition is high. Which film do you think will become America's new top movie?

Coraline

Henry Selick, director of the upcoming film "Coraline" (and also director of "A Nightmare Before Christmas"), had an interview with MTV News discussing scaring children.
I don't think he does it for fun...
“Some would say it’s too scary for kids, or it’s not scary enough for adults,” Selick said of “Coraline” in an exclusive interview with MTV News. “Doing it as a stop-motion film would sort of bridge those two audiences in some respects. Stop-motion has its own creeky feel to it. It has a charm, in a sense. You don’t know how big that thing is you’re looking at, but you know it exists.”
MTV News asked if the degree of fright in the "Coraline" film would be too harsh for children compared to the still pages of Neil Gaiman's book (which the film is based on), Selick shrugged it off.
“Everyone is afraid to scare the children, but children love to be scared,” he insisted. “You don’t want to scar them for life, but I have some kids who are growing up fast and I see what they see on TV and elsewhere. ‘Robot Chicken’ and ‘South Park’ are out there, and ‘Batman’ is on TV and it’s dark and twisted and wonderful.”
The thing is, "Robot Chicken" and "South Park" aren't scary. I don't think so at least (wait...they can be). It just contains mature material.
So should a children's film meant to be scary for children?
Check out this trailer and think on whether it is too frightening. Also, an exclusive clip below!

The trailer for "Coraline" just came out. Check it out and decide whether or not you think it might be a good movie. I hear the graphic novel is cool.
