Do You Hate Michael Cera?

I have never met the guy, so I can't tell you if he's cool or not. But the word around town is he plays the same character in every movie.

I can see where you're coming from, but "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" was still an awesome movie. But why did it fail at the box office so miserably?

Could it have been because of Cera?
Could people be so tired of him already that they won't see any movie he's in - even good ones?

Check out this post by Rope of Silicon, where they go through his entire filmography and career to see where exactly Cera went wrong and audiences decided they were done with his hipster acting.

9 Dinner For Schmucks $6.3 M

10 Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore $4.0 M

In a showdown of the sexes, men defeated women at the box office this weekend as Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables" bested Julia Roberts' "Eat Pray Love."

'Expendables," which employed most of the action icons of the 1980s and '90s, muscled up $35 million while the chick flick earned $23.7 million.

The other new filmed that opened over the weekend, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," came in disappointing 5th place behind "The Other Guys" and "Inception" with an estimated $10.5 million.

The movie, which was a smash at Comic-Con, bombed despite earning by far the best reviews of the new films. According to survey site RottenTomatoes.com, 81 percent of the nation's critics recommended "Pilgrim," while just 43 percent praised "Expendables" and 39 percent gave "Love" a thumbs-up.

The fantastic movie, like "Kick-Ass," is hard to market. If you saw some of the TV spots, you had no idea what the film was about if you're not familiar with the source material. I do think the film will be in theaters as word of mouth spreads on how good it is. Showing in 400 less screens than "Expendables" and 200 less than "Eat Pray Love" doesn't help either.

"The Other Guys" continues to make people laugh while "Inception" boggles their minds. The rest of the film continue to peter off into DVD-land and we won't be seeing them around for long because HECK - a lot of new films come out next weekend. Which one will take the top spot? It's open season, so we'll have to wait and see...

9 Toy Story 3 $3.05M

10 The Kids Are All Right $2.61M

After nearly a month atop the box office, Chris Nolan's thriller "Inception" lost its crown to a couple of goofs.

"The Other Guys," the well-reviewed comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, won the No. 1 spot this weekend with a strong $35.6 million opening.

I've heard good things about this film and expect it to do well as compared to some other the other comedy films this summer (including poor-reviewed "Grown-Ups" and "Dinner for Schmucks").

"Inception" relinquished the top spot for second place with $18.6 million (a strong hold for being in theaters a month and not taking in 3D dollars). The film has made over $400 million worldwide since its release a month ago, thanks in no smart part to befuddled moviegoers seeing the film multiple times. Distributor Warner Bros. estimates that 15 percent of "Inception"'s audience is seeing it for the second or third time.

"Step Up 3D" slipped on its on dance moves, coming in at No. 3 with only $15.5 million. And that's even with the 3D prices. At least the budget was small because filming dancing costs little compared to massive CG sequences.

A lot of film dropped as they make their way to DVD-land while a good little drama snuck into 10th place.

Now next weekend is going to be a doozy. I'm excited not just for the flicks, but also because I'm starting my trip to head back to school. I get more sleep there than I do at home over the summer...

But there will also be even more HUGE announcements and surprises surrounding these films at this year’s Comic-Con (hopefully some good stuff).

"Runaways" follows a group of teenagers who go on the run after discovering their parents are superpowered villains who belong to a crime syndicate called The Pride. The kids also find they have inherited their parents' skills and abilities. While this film isn't intended to connect to the rest of the Marvel movie universe ("Iron Man," "Thor," "Captain America"), it will be coming out around the same time as "The Avengers" - so there might be a small chance of some crossover.

'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' Teaser Trailer is made of Epic Win

Can I say any more than that?

Watch the epicness below.

I'm glad we've finally gotten to see some footage of this film. As badly as I want to be surprised, shocked, stunned and lots of other words beginning with the letter “s” when the movie hits theaters, it’s been highly distressing witnessing the almost non-existent attempt to market a film with as much potential as this one.

As to never having read the comics, I have heard tons and tons of great things about it if 1) you love comics and 2) you love video games. That about sums up my personality (besides loving movies, of course).

In the trailer, we’re given a glimpse of the seven evil exes Scott must fight- sorry, defeat – in order to date Ramona Flowers. Among them are Superman and T, Captain America and the voice of Katara and Tinker Bell (yeah, Ramona once dated a chick). There is some wonderfully imaginative visual splendor going on in this trailer and it's enough to satisfy me for now - though I know I'll be craving the full trailer any day now.

The film centers on Scott Pilgrim (Cera), a 22-year-old bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob-omb who just met the girl of this dreams Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and now her seven evil exes are coming to kill him.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" stars Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh and Jason Schwartzman hits theaters on August 13.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" will be unleashed upon theaters August 13, 2010.

Even though fans have yet to be treated to a trailer for the upcoming "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World," that doesn't mean there haven't been plenty of peeks into production courtesy of director Edgar Wright's blog. With shooting entering its final stages, Wright's most recent video update hints at the final showdown between protagonist Scott Pilgrim and his love's most evil ex-boyfriend Gideon Graves.

Blog 11 - Battle Scars - Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World from Scott Pilgrim The Movie on Vimeo.

Jason Schwartzman, who plays the as-yet-unseen Graves can be seen laughing on set with Pilgrim himself, Michael Cera. The two will most likely duke it out for the film's climactic final confrontation for the love of Ramona Flowers...or will they?

MTV News spoke with Schwartzman about his work on "Scott Pilgrim."

“One moment that was quite surreal was myself on a wire—like a wire that’s attached to a pulley system—and I’m being pulled 30 feet above the ground, sword-fighting in mid-air. I was also jumping on trampolines and flipping, and doing all this stuff. That was the ‘If-my-friends-from-high-school-could-see-me-now’ moment,” he said.

“I’ve played people who have some villain-esque tendencies, but I’ve never played an-out-and-out enemy of the people before,” he explained of his character, Gideon Gordon Graves. “It was incredible. I loved it.”

“Basically, Michael Cera falls in love with a woman,” Schwartzman said of the plot. “And in order to go out with her and win her affection, he must defeat her seven ex-evil boyfriends in a series of battles. And I am the final boyfriend; I’m the mastermind. And I am quite lethal.”

So, one would assume he was sword-fighting Cera on those wires for the final battle, right? Not so fast, cautioned Schwartzman.

“No, not Michael—somebody else,” he explained cryptically. “But I can’t say who.”

Then what happens during the climatic battle of "Scott Pilgrim?" Guess we'll have to find out next year when the film hits theaters.

'Scott Pilgrim' Video Game Is On The Way

[From MTV News]
Anyone who's read the "Scott Pilgrim" books is well aware of the heavy video game influences throughout the Bryan Lee O'Malley indie series — so it only makes sense that Pilgrim himself gets a video game.

Today, Ubisoft officially announced its involvement in developing a video game adaptation of "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," based on the Edgar Wright-directed film of the same name. The "Scott Pilgrim" game was first announced around last month's Comic-Con in San Diego, though today's press release makes the project all the more real.

"Video games have been a huge influence on the characters and world of Scott Pilgrim," said O’Malley. "As a gamer myself, it is a true pleasure to work closely with the talented team at Ubisoft to bring Scott to life on video game screens worldwide."

"We were hooked on Scott Pilgrim from our first read of the comics and script," added Bill Kispert, Vice President, Interactive, Universal Partnerships & Licensing, about the game's development. "The storyline mirrors the escalating structure of a video game, and it is filled with clever homage to video game culture. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Ubisoft to bring fans a thoroughly entertaining interactive experience."

The video game is expected to debut in 2010 to coincide with the release of the film. The sixth and final volume in the "Scott Pilgrim" comic book series, "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Universe," is expected to release around the same time.

Not only is "Scott Pilgrim" conducive for a video game adaptation, it's practically begging for one. In the comic books, Scott is forced to battle a series of evil ex-boyfriends — many of them with inane superpowers or elite skills — in order to win the affections of Ramona Flowers. Along the way, Scott comes across save points, attains coins and equips various armaments. If the game can match the lunacy of the book, this is sure to be a winning virtual experience.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" hits theaters sometime next year.

UPDATED: Awesome New Film Posters

The Licensing International Expo is currently underway in Las Vegas this week and that means we've go some new logos to check out courtesy of Ain't It Cool News. Marvel has a booth at the convention and is showing off their logos for their four upcoming movies: "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "Captain America," and "The Avengers." And Universal is showing off a giant 20-foot tall poster for their "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" movie that's in production right now. If you're a fan of any of the comics mentioned, then these logos should be pretty awesome to see anyway.

I think the "Scott Pilgrim" poster would have been a lot cooler if it was the real actors instead of drawings, but this probably only a promotional poster and won't be around for very long (same goes for the Marvel posters until they get every one cast and get good pics of them).

Scott Pilgrim: Movie Vs. Comics

There are currently 5 volumes available for Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series of comic books, but if you've read them, you know it hasn't reached its conclusion just yet. But don't worry, when the 6th one comes out, it won't be a spoiler for the movie. O'Malley writers on his twitter: "None of Vol 6 is in the movie. Note that I haven't finished writing it yet, but they're already making a movie. Their ending is their ending."

They used O’Malley’s ideas and suggestions for the film’s final act, but he admits that some of those plans may have changed while he’s writing the sixth book.

Bryan says that while he is “Totally Pleased With The Movie,” some of the “Subplots from 6 books do not fit in one 2-hour movie, and I’m glad my adaptors know this.” O’Malley listed off a bunch of subplots and characters not included in the movie such as Knives Chau’s father, Scott’s friend Lisa Miller and the battle at Honest Ed’s discount store.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" hits theaters some time next year. Hopefully we will be getting a teaser trailer by the end of the summer.

Clips and Featurettes

We have another featurette from Pixar's "Up" to share with you today.

The last "Up" featurette was called Discovering a Lost World and it looked at the world that Carl and Russell find themselves in down in South America. This featurette looks at the relationship between these two "unlikely heroes" who end up on an adventure together.

We also have another video blog from Edgar Wright on the set of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." This video covers the first day of principal photography on the set, including some shots of Michael Cera, Mark Webber, and most of the cast.

And lastly we bring you footage of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from ShoWest.
One problem I had with the first film was that it was way too corny and from this clip it looks like that corniness will be back (also will be some more cool robot fighting and fan service of Megan Fox).

The footage has been removed at the explicit request of Paramount.

As Michael Bay explains: "I just wanted the fans to get a taste of what we have been making for a year and a half because we have been so quiet. The piece was cut about a month ago for this ShoWest thing I accepted this past month - so as you can see many of the shots were far from being finished renders."

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Director of the upcoming "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" started a video blog on the Web site for the film (find it here) and talks about the physical training that the cast has to go through for the heavy action sequences in the film.

Blog One - Introduction - Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World from Scott Pilgrim The Movie on Vimeo.

Wright has also directed some of my other favorite comedy films "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz."
He is also rumored to be working on the upcoming Marvel film "Ant-Man," another hero that will be joining the "Avengers."

The Scott Pilgrim series of books have been a really popular hit with comic and manga fans. Scott Pilgrim is the story of a guy who has to deal with a bunch of ex-boyfriends trying to kill him, all the while dealing with his lady problems at the same time. The fights between Scott and the ex-boyfriends mimics boss battles from video games.
There are five books currently out in the series.

Scott Pilgrim Animation Rumors

MTV News sat down with Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of the comic series "Scott Pilgrim," during New York Comic Con to talk about what Brandon Routh said about how some of the film based on the comic, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," will be hand drawn animation.

I think what he said was kind of blown out of proportion by the rumor mill,” said O’Malley of Routh’s description of the film. “It’s not going to be like half the thing is hand-animated, like they’re saying on the Internet lately.”

O’Malley told MTV he believes Routh was explaining “more about special effects and incorporating some hand-drawn doodling and stuff.”

“It’s not going to be a hand-drawn Michael Cera,” he added.

As for whether he’d be the one providing that animation, O’Malley told MTV it was still early to weigh in on his level of involvement in that area.

“I might be involved a little bit,” he hinted, “but it’s still kind of early on that.”

So how much of the film will deal with animation and how much will be live-action?

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Edgar Wright is directing the adaption of Bryan Lee O'Malley's comic book series "Scott Pilgrim," which will blend the use of live action and hand drawn animation.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" stars Michael Cera ("Superbad"), who is Scott Pilgrim, a man who wishes to win the heart of Ramona V. Flowers (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, "Live Free or Die Hard"). To do so, he must defeat her evil ex-boyfriends, of which there are seven.

Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns"), who plays one of the evil ex-boyfriends, Todd Ingram, spoke to Collider about the upcoming film and its blend of real people and animation.

"Anyway, while we all knew the movie would be live action, Brandon let it slip that parts of the movie will feature some hand drawn animation!

While he didn’t say where the animation would be in the movie, I’d imagine it’d be when Michael Cera’s character is fighting the boyfriends. But that’s just my guess. Brandon also said that the script finishes the comic…which could mean the script includes what happens in book 6. For those that don’t know, book 5 just came out."

FirstShowing.net assumes that the animation will play a part when Pilgrim must fight the ex-boyfriends.
"In the comic, whenever Scott Pilgrim battles one of the evil exes (there are seven in total) in order to eventually win the heart of Ramona V. Flowers, the fight plays out like a 'boss battle' reminiscent of any video game. Now imagine seeing that adapted to the big screen in a cool combination of hand drawn animation and live-action Michael Cera ass-kicking."

Check out the video interview with Brandon Routh from Collider below!

So this can be a totally visual spectale that will appeal to the fanbase of the comic series, but the main question is how will the general audience enjoy it? Hopefully they will as the comic is great and the movie sounds too good to be true.
Let me see a trailer for it first.
