Director Peter Berg Updates on 'Battleship' and 'Hancock 2'

After announcing that they were going to make a film based on the game "Battleship," Universal Pictures let it be known that the bad guys in the movie aren't going to be other ships, but aliens.

I know aliens have absolutely nothing to do with the game, but how can you really make a movie based on the game? Giant red and white pegs aren't going to fall out of the sky. So instead it will be aliens.

It appears that Universal and director Peter Berg have been listening to the negative reaction their "Battleship" movie has gotten – particularly about the aliens being the “villains,” and so the studio sent some journalists and bloggers to the U.S.S. Sterett, where they got a chance to ask questions to Berg about the project.

Those lucky enough to get invited to this thing managed to get a look at some early concept art for the alien enemies, which over at Latino Review are described as, “black, [with] legs that spread out sort of like water spiders you see on the top of lakes. They looked pretty H.G. Wells-ish and supposedly each ship matches up very well to our ships.” CHUD reports the effects are being done by ILM, which is extremely encouraging news.

The alien race are apparently called The Regents, and will be a combo of real-life actors and CGI. Berg compared it to the Davey Jones effect from "Pirates of the Caribbean" (also done by ILM), but much less complicated. The aliens come from a different planet than us but one with a similar ecology to ours.
However, the interesting part is that "Battleship" will be set apart from most other alien invasion movies in that the aliens aren’t coming down to destroy or take over, but are looking to build a huge power source in the ocean. This “goal” inevitably brings them into conflict with us and our battleships becomes essentially the humans are in the way.

The aliens apparently won’t have super-advanced technology (another thing setting it apart from most invasion movies) but will employ ballistics-based weapons, like ours.

Berg also mentions that while the ships can fly and do so to get to Earth, once they land in the ocean they stay there. One of their ships will be damaged which is presumably why they can’t just fly away and are forced to battle our ships. Berg also makes mention of the fact that the story won’t all be seen from the humans’ perspective, but we’ll get to see The Regent’s side of the action, too.

Inevitably there has to be a hero fighting on our side and Berg said it will be a Commanding Officer of a destroyer ship, which is the main one we’ll see in the film. The CO has a team of five guys who will make up the team of good guys we will be rooting for.

You can head over to both Latino Review and CHUD for a whole lot more details and pics, including their tour of the U.S.S. Sterett and more answers from Berg as he was quizzed about a lot of aspects of the movie.
As for "Hancock 2," it seems that the film will be delayed due to Berg taking on the big task of directing "Battleship."

Speaking to HitFix, Berg said that "Hancock 2" will still happen at some point, just not soon.

“There are so many cooks in that particular kitchen that are so busy and Will’s [Smith] kind of taken time off to be with his kids and his kids are now making all kinds of films and there are so many people involved in that from Will to his partner James Lassiter to Akiva [Goldsmith] to Michael Man and myself,” Berg said.

“To get us all in the same room where we can talk and then agree on anything? You’ll never meet a group of people who will have a harder time agreeing on anything… I think it will happen, we just all have to get in the same room with some consistency.”

When asked about whether "Hancock 2" would be his next film after "Battleship," Berg said he wants to do "Lone Survivor," which tells the tale of, “17 seals that were killed in one gunfight in Afghanistan. One survived.” But what about after that? Well, Berg didn’t say, but hasn’t ruled out a sequel to his action-adventure, "The Rundown."
He’s not sure why no plans are in place to do "The Rundown 2," but he said he’d definitely be up for doing another:

“I love ‘The Rundown.’ I don’t know if the audience was quite ready to accept Dwayne [at the time]. We had a certain amount of resistance… They screwed around with our release date, but the film still performed well.”

“He’d [The Rock would] love it… We always joke ‘When are we gonna do it?’ But sometimes it’s just a question of timing and getting all the stars to line up. There is no reason why we wouldn’t .”

While I am less skeptical about the upcoming "Battleship" movie, I still see no connection between the movie and the game. The game literally has no plot to it as you just try to find and destroy your opponent's ships. There is no reason for the destruction and there are no aliens. I'll guess I'll wait to see some footage of the film to decide whether it will make a decent film or not (not taking in any consideration with its ties to the game).

As for "Hancock 2," I didn't like the first one. It started off decent but took a nosedive in the second half. You can't have a hero movie without a villain. While the idea for the sequel was to have more beings with superpowers, I can live without a sequel. But the studio might not wait for Berg. They may hire a new director and make the movie anyway.

What do you think about Berg and his "Battleship"? Are you looking forward to see "Hancock 2"?

Peter Berg Will Sink Your 'Battleship'

Back in May we reported that Hancock helmer, Peter Berg, was in talks to direct the live-action adaptation of the popular Hasbro board game, "Battleship." Fast-forward four months and Berg has been confirmed to direct the movie, and a release date has been set - July 1st, 2011.

Variety is reporting that Berg directing "Battleship" is part of a two-picture deal with Universal, the second film being an Afghan war drama called "Lone Survivor." Erich and Jon Hoeber ("Whiteout") have penned the script for the movie.

Berg has given his thoughts on why he wants to direct a Battleship movie, stating that his passion comes from his naval historian father:

“I’ve been consumed with doing one of these since I tried to convince Tom Rothman at Fox to make a film about John Paul Jones, the founder of the American Navy… As a kid, I was dragged from Navy museum to museum, and spent so much time on ships, listening to my father talk about the great battles of WWII, I did my high school thesis on the Battle of Midway. When this came up, it didn’t take me long to find a take for a film that is filled with raucous action-packed naval battles.”

With regards to the plot of "Battleship" it was previously described as, “an epic naval action adventure,” which understandably (at that early stage) was very vague. Berg has now described the film as being, “a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle.”

"Battleship" may only be the second board game/toy based movie to get an official release date set (after the Steve Oedekerk scripted "Stretch Armstrong" - set for an April 11, 2011 release), but there are plenty more in the works: "Monopoly" (with Ridley Scott attached to direct); "Candyland" (with Kevin Lima set to direct); "Clue" (with Gore Verbinski attached); and even one based on the "Ouiji Board" (with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes attached).
With "Battleship" being set up as Berg’s next project (and presumably "Lone Survivor" coming after that), it could mean that "Hancock 2" is at least a few years away. That would be kind of disappointing considering all the recent buzz about the superhero sequel, including Berg confirming that both Will Smith and Charlize Theron will return as well as two writers being brought on-board to get the script started.

If Berg is doing other projects, and the studio wants "Hancock 2" in theaters ASAP, could we potentially see a change of director?

Production on "Battleship" is set for a Spring 2010 start, and (as stated) is scheduled to be released on July 1st, 2011.

Tired of board games being made into movies and so many remakes? Yeah? So is Hitler.

Will Smith and Charlize Theron Confirmed for 'Hancock 2'

In the summer of 2008 Will Smith starred as the title character in the superhero movie "Hancock." The movie had a good box office run, banking over $600 million worldwide; so it’s no wonder that talks of a sequel weren’t too far behind.

While "Hancock 2" has been in the talked about, it was unconfirmed whether director Peter Berg would be able to lure Will Smith and co-star Charlize Theron back for a sequel.

In a conversation before he heads to the Toronto film festival with a Wayne Gretzky documentary, Berg confirmed for MTV News that both Smith and Theron will certainly be returning for the next "Hancock."

"Everybody's going to come back for a sequel," Berg said in response to a question about the two megastars.

The big reveal at the end of "Hancock" was that [Spoiler Alert!] both Smith and Theron's characters are immortal gods who become vulnerable when near each other. For the sequel, Berg said we can expect the appearance of at least one more all-powerful god. What's more, he's got his eye on a well-known name to play a third superhero.

"We have [someone in mind]," Berg said. "I'm not gonna tell you who, but we have!"

Are you happy to see Will Smith and Charlize Theron reprising their roles? Who would you like to see as the third all-powerful demi-god?

'Hancock 2' Gets New Writers

Two writers have been hired by Columbia to pen a sequel to the Will Smith superhero movie "Hancock," which grossed $624million worldwide last year.

The two writers Sony has brought on-board for "Hancock 2" are Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara, both writers of "The Shield." The pair’s producing credits include other such TV work such as "24," "Dexter" and "Nash Bridges."

The original producing team is expected to return, although it hasn't been confirmed whether director Peter Berg will be back to helm this one. We are sure, though, that they wouldn't be moving forward if they weren't able to get Will Smith back as Hancock, so he's probably returning.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, though the writers will work with Smith and director Peter Berg to build on the world hinted at in the first movie.

The original starred Smith as a boozy, irresponsible superhero who turns his life around with the help of a public relations expert. It later is revealed that the hero is part of a line of god-like beings who have been around for more than 3,000 years and lose their powers when close to fellow immortals.

In the first film, Hancock discovers his superhuman soulmate is Mary Embrey (Charlize Theron), the wife of publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) who has given the hero an image makeover.

Hancock, originally titled Tonight He Comes, took more than 12 years to make it to the screen; the sequel will be on a faster track.
Peter Berg recently spoke to SCI FI Wire about his ideas for a sequel, confirming that it would elaborate on the film's mythology.

"There might be another god out there," Berg said. "Might be another one."

Berg added that the subplot of publicist Ray Embrey should pick up where it left off in Hancock, where he's starting his charity campaign.

But Berg said it wasn't possible to leap straight back in to "Hancock 2": "They like to fast-track it, but Will's busy, I'm pretty busy. We're excited to do one, but we want the script to be right and the movie to be right. We don't feel a burning imperative to go right back into it."

What do you think of the two writers that have been hired for the sequel to "Hancock"? Are you surprised the studio is pushing forward so quickly with this one?

"Hancock 2" is currently in the development stages and doesn’t have a planned release date yet.

Movie News Mash 2!

Another mash-up of movie news that would be too small on their own! A sequel for sequels! What do I mean by that? Read and find out!

"Hancock 2"

JoBlo got to talk with actor Will Smith while he was promoting his new film "Seven Pounds."

"When we asked Will if he'd ever be up for playing another superhero he replied that there were a lot of unexplored characters in the 'Hancock' universe that would be ripe for a sequel and confirmed that we'll definitely see the rumored 'Hancock 2' in a few years."

Are you ready for "Hancock 2?" I still think the first film was seriously flawed, so if they can fix things up I am all for it!

"Sin City 2"

IGN caught up with Frank Miller during a press junket for his upcoming "The Spirit" and they couldn't help but ask about the follow-up to the great comic-to-film adaptation "Sin City."

"Sin City 2 is written," Miller proclaimed. "It's mainly a matter of working out the details of the production. I'm hoping to do it with Robert Rodriguez again in the same circumstances that we did the first one, and we could be shooting as soon as April."

Does this mean that we could be seeing "Sin City 2" by the end of next year or the beginning of 2010? I sure hope so!

"Superman: Man of Steel"

UGO Movie Blog got to talk to director Bryan Singer on the phone to talk about Superman. After directing "Superman Returns," it was thought by many that Singer would return for "Man of Steel," but Singer says otherwise.

The phone conversation went like this.

JH: But there is talk of a new film, though. Are you officially involved in this talk of the new film?

BS: I am not officially involved in the talk, no.

JH: But when talk happens they’ll call you.

BS: Well it’s, you know, I have relationships with Warner Brothers and with the character and, and, and, and it’s just the way things work out.

JH: But you are not divorced from Superman at this point.

BS: No.

So there it is folks! Do you plan on seeing any of these movies? Are you excited for these sequels? I know I am (well....maybe not for the "Hancock" sequel...but there is potential).

Summer Movies of '08 that I forgot

More movies from the summer that I forgot to mention. Not because they weren't good. it is just that my memory falters sometimes.

You Don't Mess with the Zohan - Some may expect Adam Sandler to try different humor, but he sticks with what he is used to. A lot of physical humor and senselessness. Also, who doesn't love Nick Swardson, Roy Schnieder, and John Turturro (who have all been in previous Sandler movies like Anger Management, though John Turturro somehow showed up in Transformers...)? Zohan delas with the Israelis and Arabs a lot and just pokes fun at accents and shampoo. The movie is not meant to be taken seriously, folks. It is meant for you to sit back and laugh, albeit only a few times. In the end, it is worth at least one watching. 6.5/10

Kung Fu Panda - I have to say, I watched this movie twice. It was enjoyable, with great animation and lots of funny dialogue. Not seeing Jack Black actually works since I find his voice to be funnier than his facial expressions. The fight scenes are just amazing. You may be thinking Matrix when you see them, but since it is all CGI, the filmmakers could definitely bend their imagination into the fight scenes. The story is interesting, about Po, the panda, being the dragon warrior, the one to save them all. The movie will leave you wanting to see more action and more of Jack Black pretending to get beat up! 8.3/10 Skadoosh!

Hancock - I saw the trailer and couldn't wait to see this superhero movie. And watching it for the first hour, hour and a half, it is truly enjoyable. Good jokes with good effects and lots of pure fun. Then the story takes a nosedive into a totally different movie that loses the laughs and loses the plot. The characters change from what they were in the beginning to what they were in the end. It is a superhero movie with a villain tagged on as a last thought. In the end, not my favorite of the hero movies of the summer. 5.7/10

More movies will be on the way. I am trying to get other people involved in this as well. I am one person and cannot see every movie out there. There are also some movies I will not end up seeing because they don't...well....interest me. So people, if you have seen a movie and there is no review for it here, then I will be happy to put up Guest Reviews. It is time to get involved!
