'300' Sequel Is Really a Prequel

Filmmaker Zack Snyder has long said that Frank Miller is hard at work on making a sequel to the graphic novel "300," which Snyder adapted into a successful film. Snyder has also said he intends on adapting the new graphic novel into a feature film as well, but not until Miller's work was done.

So based on the latest word from Miller, Snyder might want to get his Spartan armor ready.

In an interview with Hero Complex, Miller revealed that he already has a title in the form of "Xerxes," clearly derived from the name of the first film's villain played by "Lost" actor Rodrigo Santoro.

"It's the battle of Marathon through my lens," Miller said of the novel's plot. "I've finished the plot and I'm getting started on the artwork."

"300" focused on the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, ten years after the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, where the Persian forces were brutally decimated by the hands of their would-be Greek subjugates.

Since Xerxes' father ruled the Persians during that time, perhaps the new story would be something of a coming-of-age story for the eventual "300" antagonist.

As far as I know, Gerard Butler's character in "300," the Spartan king Leonidas, was not part of the Battle of Marathon but was obviously alive at the time of it; the Spartans had been asked by the Athenians to send assistance but declined because they were in the middle of a religious festival.

Whether Miller weaves Leonidas into the story remains to be seen...

Leonidas Might Return for Next '300'

Frank Miller and Zack Snyder are working together for the sequel to the Spartan movie "300." Miller is writing the comic as you read this and then Snyder will turn that comic into another film.

MTV News spoke with producer Mark Canton who says he is onboard for the sequel.

Canton said that although Snyder and Miller have agreed on the basic setting of the story, things are moving along slowly but surely.

“Things are always looking good with ‘300,’ it’s a blessing and a gift. Zack’s a genius, and no matter where you go it’s the one movie that people around the world seem to somewhat identify with the most,” Canton said. “We’re thrilled for [a sequel]; it’ll be a blast. There’s a new Blu-Ray coming out all over again shortly, so that’s great. It’s like the gift that never stops giving.”

And if Canton has his way, the gift will continue to give with a follow-up-film for the $210 million grossing movie. “[The key to the sequel] is about getting it right, you know,” the producer said of their dilemma after having killed off virtually the entire cast in the first film. “Frank is a perfectionist, and so is Zack. And I think they set the bar pretty high.”

But if you’re thinking that no sequel could ever be the same without Gerard Butler, don’t worry — because Canton revealed to MTV News that even King Leonidas could be brought back from the dead. “Never assume anything; never assume anything,” he repeated when asked if the original cast were gone for good. “It’ll be what it’ll be. But if we really do it, in this case, we have a visionary creator and a visionary filmmaker.”

'300' Sequel Details Revealed

With a budget of just $65 million and a worldwide gross of $456 million, the huge profit made by "300" was always going to suggest a sequel.

Anyone who's seen the 2007 film - which used green-screen technology to digitally add all the backgrounds - will be aware that it doesn't leave anything open for a direct continuation with the same characters.

So what do they have in mind for the follow-up?

Director Zack Snyder had earlier revealed the planned sequel would take place in the year between the first movie's climactic Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea, which narrator Dilios is at while relating the events of the film.

The movie, starring Gerard Butler as king Leonidas, was based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller giving a more fantastical retelling of the historical battle.

And in a new interview Snyder has now confirmed that Miller is creating a new graphic novel on which the second film will be based.

He told Superhero Hype: "I know for a fact that Frank [Miller] is writing right now. [He's] drawing away and seems to be knee-deep in it. I think he's going to head back to Greece again and do another reconnaissance."

He added: "I think we would use the same technology... I don't want it to look too Star Wars-ian... Just from what [Miller] told me, it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain. We're going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places.

"There would be an opportunity for bigger visions, though I'd hope for the same aesthetic. The tech we used for 300 was not a revolution. It's basically what the weatherman has. Look, instead of Accuweather it's Sparta... It's going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids."

Do you think "300" should end where it is now or that a sequel will do justice to the original?

300 Part II

Way back in October was when I last blogged about the potential sequel to Zack Snyder's blockbuster film about Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae.

Now we finally get some news straight from Snyder about the possibility of Frank Miller (writer of the original "300" graphic novel) writing another comic. And Snyder says he is all for making another adaptation to film.

Accoring to MTV News, "Although it was dramatized terrifically, Snyder’s '300' told the story of the Battle of Thermopylae, which occurred in 480 BC. The film’s final moments mention that one year later, at Platea, 10,000 Spartan warriors helped defeat a huge Persian force; in a historical context, an equally important event occurred when the Athenian navy crushed the Persians in the battle of Salamis. According to Snyder, '300 Part II' will focus on the intense 12 months when these battles were taking place.

So, in essence, the '300' follow-up wouldn’t be a prequel that could bring back Gerard Butler and the other stars; it also wouldn’t be a traditional sequel with mostly all-new stars. Instead, Snyder and Miller hope to make a film that occurs somewhere around 7/8 of the way through “300,” expanding on the moment. And although such an idea seems somewhat revolutionary, would you expect anything less from the guy who made such a defiantly loyal 'Watchmen' movie?"

I would be willing to see more Spartans battle some more Persians. I enjoyed the first film, I'm sure I'll enjoy the next. But I'll wait to hear more to give a final decision like that.

300 sequel: 301?

Latino Review got the scoop on the latest news about a sequel (or prequel) on 300.

"So when does the second 300 film take place?

In short, Snyder says he's spoken with Frank Miller who will be writing and drawing the graphic novel that the second film will be based upon. Upon Miller's completion of the book, then, and only then, will they delve into writing a script for the movie.

Snyder continued and said he would not have any input into the novel and wants it to be a creation of Miller's 100%."

Right now Zack Snyder is working on Watchmen and Frank Miller is working on the film The Spirit.

The Spirit

Coming out during Christmas time is another comic-based movie, but this time it is directed by Frank Miller, the comic genius behind 300, Sin City, and most of Daredevil.
The Spirit is about a rookie cop named Denny Colt who returns from the dead as The Spirit, a hero who fights the forces of evil in his city. And if you haven't heard, he loves the ladies and the ladies love him.
Filmed in the same style as Sin City, the film is very eye-catching, but can it catch the attention of audiences this December? I think it has a very good chance.

And you can't forget about Samuel L. Jackson in there. No you can't.

Who Watches The Watchmen?

March 9, 2009. I am looking forward to this day.
I read V for Vendetta the comic and loved it. Then saw the movie and loved it. Allan Moore wrote many other comics that had stories that shook my mind and many others.
Watchmen is the best out of them all.
And Zack Snyder, the man who directed 300, another comic (written by another great writer Frank Miller) movie. And that film was voted the 'best use of money for a ticket.'
And here comes Watchmen. And I bet it is gonna kick Batman's armor bound rear! Sure, it may not make the profit that Dark Knight did, but we will see.

The story goes like this. (By Evan Murphy from an IMDB summary) "In a gritty and alternate 1985 the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown, but after one of the masked veterans is brutally murdered an investigation into the killer is initiated. The reunited heroes set out to prevent their own destruction, but in doing so discover a deeper and far more diabolical plot."
Sounds good? You know it does. More news to come!
