The news - James McAvoy was cast as a young Professor Xavier a while back, but now there's some news casting news out. Bankamin Walker, star of the Public Theater’s “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” will play Beast while Michael Fassbender ("Inglourious Basterds") is in talks to play a young Magneto. What other mutant characters will be in the film and who will play them? More news will likely be forthcoming as Matthew Vauhgn ("Kick-Ass") prepares the film for its June 2011 release.

The news - Heat Vision reports that Alex Skarsgard ("True Blood"), son of actor Stellan Skarsgard, has signed on to star in "Battleship," a movie based on the Hasbro board game and being directed by Peter Berg ("Hancock"). Skarsgard will star as a "straight and narrow" naval officer whom Taylor Kitsch, who was cast a few months ago, idolizes. There's probably going to be lots more news on this upcoming film since it doesn't hit theaters until June 2012.

Movie News Mash 7
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader"
The third installment in the "Narnia" franchise finally gets a release date.
The film will be coming out on Dec. 10, 2010.
Michael Apted is set to direct with all the regulars expected to return as Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.

"Jonah Hex"
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Megan Fox is in final negotiations to star opposite Josh Brolin and John Malkovich in 'Jonah Hex,' Warner Bros.' action Western based on the DC Comics character. She also is attached to star and develop 'Fathom,' Fox Atomic's comic book-based underwater adventure.
In 'Hex,' being directed by Jimmy Hayward, Fox will play Leila, a gun-wielding beauty and love interest of Hex (Brolin), a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner (Malkovich) who wants to raise an army of undead to liberate the South.
The movie is prepping for a shoot in April, with Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar and Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman producing.
'Fathom,' a comic created by recently deceased artist Michael Turner, follows a young woman named Aspen who learns she is a member of a race of aquatic humanoids who possess the ability to control water.
The project was at one point set up at James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment. When the option lapsed, producer Peter Safran scooped it up and began packaging it, eventually attracting Fox, a fan of the comic since its 1998 debut, when it became the top-selling comic of the year. Fox had been seeking Turner to investigate 'Fathom's' rights availability.
Fox is now helping develop and shape the adaptation, which is being written by Jordan Mechner, the creator of video game "Prince of Persia." (The ICM-repped scribe also wrote on Disney's Jerry Bruckheimer-produced adaptation.)"
ICM-repped Fox next appears in this summer's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and stars in the Diablo Cody-penned comedic supernatural thriller movie "Jennifer's Body," which opens in the fall. She recently appeared in the comedy "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People."

"Inception"
According to Variety, "Leonardo DiCaprio will star in 'Inception,' the science-fiction film that Christopher Nolan ('The Dark Knight') wrote and will direct as his next pic at Warner Bros.
The project shoots this year and is slated to be released in summer 2010, with Nolan and Emma Thomas producing. DiCaprio's deal is in final negotiations.
DiCaprio, coming off 'Revolutionary Road' and 'Body of Lies,' will next be seen starring in the Martin Scorsese-directed 'Shutter Island' at Paramount."
"Sucker Punch"
According to First Showing, "Visionary director Zack Snyder's next feature film is an ass-kicking all-female extravaganza called 'Sucker Punch,' about a girl named Baby Doll who, while in a mental institution, imagines an alternative reality to hide from the pain, and in that world, begins planning her escape. Starring as the lead will be Amanda Seyfried. Also joining the cast - Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood, and Emma Stone.
Warner Brothers has graciously given Zack Snyder a $100 million budget for 'Sucker Punch,' so expect something pretty awesome, just like '300' and 'Watchmen.' The four aforementioned actresses - Hudgens, Cornish, Rachel Wood, and Stone - are all fellow inmates who take on fantastical roles in the lead character's mind."
According to Entertainment Weekly, "The $100 million budgeted film for Warner Bros. is scheduled to begin production in the Fall. Says Snyder, who is also producing the film with his wife Deborah Snyder, 'I already did the all-male cast with '300,' so I'm doing the opposite end of the spectrum.'"
All interesting news, but don't have much to say since I have to get up for class in five hours. Good night fellow readers!

Dawn Treader Sets Sails
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" has sailed past some rocky shores since Disney dropped its role in the "Narnia" series. Since 2oth Century Fox joined, Walden Media has now had the chance to actually get a writer for the movie.
According to Latino Review, "Michael Petroni has been tapped to write the next installment in 'The Chronicles of Narnia' franchise, reports the trades.
Petroni will write 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' for Walden Media and Fox 2000. He will take over for Richard LaGravanese, who penned the most recent draft of the C.S. Lewis novel.
Move signals that Walden is moving full steam ahead on the third chapter in the franchise with its new Narnia studio partner, 20th Century Fox. In late December, the project seemed in doubt after Disney decided to pull the plug on co-financing the pic.
Walden is eyeing a summer start date for a holiday 2010 release through the Fox Walden label."
Do you want to see more "Narnia" films or do you think three will be enough (there are seven books in the series)?
More news to come! Catch ya' later!

Fox Helps Dawn Treader
According to Variety, "One month after Disney decided to pull the plug on co-financing the third movie in Walden Media's 'Chronicles of Narnia' series, Walden has found a new partner in 20th Century Fox.
Fox, which was entitled to first crack at 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader' after Disney dropped out because of the shared Fox Walden marketing and distribution label, has made a commitment to develop the project. The two sides are still working out budget and script issues, but the hope is to shoot the film at the end of summer for a holiday 2010 release through the Fox Walden label."
I don't know how well "Dawn Treader" will do compared to "Prince Caspian," but I am hoping to see more "Narnia" films since I have read all the tales and found them to be enjoyable.
According to The Geek Files, "Both partners are now sorting out budget and script issues, with the aim of filming in Australia at the end of summer for a 2010 release."
Hopefully next year we will have "Dawn Treader" in movie theaters!

Fantasy Film Franchises

Fantasy films sometimes create major turnouts at movie theaters and sometimes they don't. Movie makers saw the success of "Harry Potter" and immediately tried to jump on the band wagon of the fantasy genre.
It turns out not a lot of fantasy franchises do well.
According to The Independent, "America's half-empty shopping malls aren't the only place where big business is sucking its teeth and proclaiming 'everything must go.' The worsening credit crunch is also threatening the future of some of Hollywood's best-known film franchises.
Disney took advantage of the seasonal news lull last week to quietly slip out news that it has decided to withdraw from producing 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,' the next in the Chronicles of Narnia series of films based on the children's books by C S Lewis.
Blaming 'budgetary considerations' for its decision, the studio said it would not renew an option to co-finance the $200m (£137m) movie because the worsening economic climate has forced it to become more selective about the number of films it produces.
It was the second major fantasy franchise to be unceremoniously cancelled in recent months. Earlier this year, Warner Bros decided not to make a follow-up to 'The Golden Compass,' the first instalment of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. At the time, the studio suggested that the decision to abandon the sequel, 'The Subtle Knife,' had been made because the original had upset Christian groups.
However, the real reason was likely to have been more prosaic: The Golden Compass received lukewarm reviews and managed to generate just $70m at the US box office. Although the film staved off disaster by taking $300m internationally, investors were sceptical about a follow-up.
The wider film industry is expecting to tighten its belt in 2009 with even blue-chip film-makers unable to raise funds. Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks company is facing a rocky new year after failing to raise the $750m it needs to produce its slate of 17 films. Some of the money was to have been provided by AIG, the insurance giant that collapsed in September. No new investor has yet emerged.
Even Harry Potter, the most profitable franchise in film history, isn't totally secure. Its screenwriter, Steve Kloves, said recently that Warner Bros was worried about the prospects for the last three films in the series, since J K Rowling is no longer driving anticipation for the titles by producing new books."
Screen Rant replied to the threat of the last three "Harry Potter" films not being made by saying, "But I don’t understand how Warner Bros. could think even for the slightest of moments that a 'Harry Potter' film wouldn’t make tons of money at the box office. Whether there are new books being released or not, the remaining installments are going to do just as well as the other films… perhaps even better because they show the story drawing to a close. 'Harry Potter' has already proven itself to be the most financially successful film franchise of all time."
What are your thoughts on these economic troubles affecting the movie industry? Do you think there should be new "Narnia" or "Golden Compass" films? How would you feel if the last Harry Potter films weren't made?

Voyage of the Dawn Treader

"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is most likely not going to be made for awhile.
Information taken from many sources.
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" will have to sail without Disney, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
While declining to elaborate, Disney and Walden Media confirmed Tuesday that for budgetary and logistical reasons the Burbank-based studio is not exercising its option to co-produce and co-finance the next "Narnia" movie with Walden.
The third entry in the series, based on the classic books by C.S. Lewis, was in preproduction and set for a spring shoot for a planned May 2010 release. The development puts the participation of the talent attached in doubt. Michael Apted was on board to direct a script by Steven Knight. The key players of the second installment, "Prince Caspian" -- Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, William Moseley and Anna Popplewell -- were to return for the third film.
Walden has a strong relationship with the Lewis estate and will shop "Treader" in hopes of finding a new partner. The most likely candidate at this stage is Fox, which markets and distributes Walden fare under the Fox Walden banner.

"Transporter 3" is up there only because the fans of the previous movies helped it.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Did you see "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" and "Prince Caspian?"
Did you like them?
Are you hoping for the next installment of the "Chronicles of Narnia?"
I come bearing neither good news nor bad news (well, it is actually mostly bad).
Disney is still planning on making "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," but UGO Movie Blog reports some sinister findings, basing the news off of Jim Hill Media.
“Director Michael Apted has been riding herd on Dawn Treader’s development since June of 2007. Actors have been cast (‘Son of Rambow’ star Will Poulter has been hired to play Pevensie cousin Eustace Scrubb) and studio space has been lined up for a four-to-five month-long shoot which is allegedly slated to begin in late January. Which is all well & good. Except that Disney hasn’t actually greenlit production of ‘Voyage of the Dawn Treader.’ Not yet, anyway. What’s the hold-up? Well...Part of the problem here is that ‘Prince Caspian’ didn’t do nearly as well as Disney & Walden had hoped it would this past Summer. This $200 million follow-up to the studio’s 2005 blockbuster, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ only earned $141.6 million during its initial domestic release. Which is less than half of what the first ‘Narnia’ movie earned during its stateside release back in December of 2005.”
The third "Narnia" film was to be made in Iceland has changed, possibly sending the crew to Mexico to film where James Cameron filmed "Titanic."
Other news includes the film's budget being lowered by around $40 million, the release date getting pushed to December of 2010.
According to the UGO Movie Blog post, "And as for the future of the series, as recently as August of 2007, the Narnia series was to debut one installment a year until all seven were completed by May of 2013. But in September of 2007, Disney changed its mind, explaining that 'In consideration of the challenging schedules for our young actors, Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media have chosen to delay the start of production for ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ until Summer 2008.'"
At the 2008 New York Comic-con, producer Mark Johnson stated that, “Right now, we have no plans to go beyond ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.’ If (that movie is) successful, I’d love to do ‘The Silver Chair’ after that...as long as you keep embracing these movies, we’ll make all seven.”
"Prince Caspian" hits stores on DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 2, 2008.

Summer Movies of '08
I seriously started this blog late because now is a kind of lull in movies that attract my attention. The summer was a complete success in my mind, so I shall just start with those since a lot of those films should be coming out on DVD soon
Iron Man - One of the best adaptations from comic-to-film I have seen so far. Great acting plus adding a realistic touch to the superhero. It is also the start of the Avengers franchise (hoped you stayed after the credits). The only downfall to the film is that you don't really get to see Iron Man that much, but then again, you do get a lot of Robert Downey, Jr. 8.5/10
The Incredible Hulk - Better than the first movie, and that is all that I need to like it. Stays truer to the comics than the first film also. Also brings in the 2nd film going into the Avengers franchise (this one you didn't have to sit through the credits for). All-in-all, the movie was good except for the end. The villain just didn't really live up to the hype and there seem to be a lot of questions unanswered, like what is up with General Ross aiding destruction and why can't Bruce Banner and Betty Ross get it on? 7.8/10
Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Sequel to the awesome fantasy film by Guillermo del Toro. How can this movie not be good if del Toro turned down directing such films as Halo, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and I Am Legend just so he could make this movie? And the film has such a good transition from the last one, and it also begs to make a 3rd. If you haven't seen any of the Hellboy movies, you need to go see them both now. Plus, Seth MacFarlane as the voice of Johann Krauss, come on people....hilarious! 8.8/10
Speed Racer - I have felt a lot of hate for this film, but I enjoyed it. First of all, it is supposed to be 'out there'. Dare I even say it was meant to be silly and campy. Watching the film may give you a seizure (not really folks) but you will be dazzled by almost every special effect out there. It does have moments that I don't think should have been in there for children (thought the censor beep in the film gave some kids the giggles), but in the end children will enjoy the movie more than adults because it feels like a big cartoon. I would say Death Race is the adult equivalent for this movie. 7.1/10
WALL-E - Some people ask, "Why robots?" I ask why not? The film starts off slow, yes, I agree, but the adorableness of WALL-E and his daily activities makes up for that fact. The story progresses along at a snail's pace at first. The only thing you understand is that WALL-E is smitten with another robot named EVE. But once you get the general idea of the plot, you will find yourself rooting for the little robots and wanting to have a little WALL-E of your own. PIXAR, you rock! Film great for all ages! 9.0/10
The Dark Knight - If you still haven't seen the movie, you may be 1 out of 5 in the country. But still, yeah, it was awesome. Picking up about a year after Batman Begins, we start right off with Batman and his epicness. Chris Nolan is definitely going in the right direction with his rebooted Batman franchise, but now I only question what will be next. The film had superb acting and a very deep plot even for a film based on a comic. It wasn't just the hero-meet-villain set-up, it was totally different. Felt like the Godfather at certain points with all the mafia stuff, but that is what made it so good. Sit through the long film and afterwards ask yourself, "What is gonna happen with the Joker now that Heath Ledger is dead?" Kids like Batman, but they may find this film a bit frightening....especially Two-Face. 9.5/10 "Why so serious?"
Sex and the City - Yes, I did see this movie, and yes, I am a man. Yes, I did watch all the episodes of the show. So yes, I know what I am talking about. The show was very realistic when it came to things regarding sex, and the film stuck with that, but the film is not the show. With the show, you didn't know what was gonna happen next. With the movie, you kind of know what is going to happen, there are a few twists, but the film doesn't really leave you in suspense. The film is more about love than sex, but I see that as a stepping stone because the characters have moved on and matured. I mean, are we all supposed to be fascinated about sex forever or aren't we all gonna settle down sometime in the future. The movie seriously could have just been another season on HBO in my opinion. But if you liked the show, you will enjoy the movie. 6.8/10
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - I have read all seven novels in the Chronicles of Narnia and I wasn't really expecting them to make this film. Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe yeah because that is famous, but Prince Caspian.....it was a surprise to me. I suppose I liked it. The mood in this film is a lot darker than in the first, and that was awesome, because the movie needed that dark undertone. The other undertone is of course all the Christian religiousness, but the movie is still good if you don't care for that. Epic fights and great effects, the film makes me excited for when Voyage of the Dawn Treader comes out. 7.7/10
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Don't be hatin'. I enjoyed the movie, and I have heard a lot of negative stuff about it, but then I found out some of these people never saw the original films. Look here folks, the original trilogy was a spoof on adventure films from the 1930's. All the adventuring was just silly nonsense with some cool death scenes. The new movie is a spoof on the 1950's, so that is why there is a lot more sci-fi element to this film. And also why the baddies are Russians instead of Nazis. And what dud this film deliver? Silly nonsense with some cool death scenes! If you were to watch the original films and then Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, you would feel the similarity! So enjoy the movie, but you might be afraid of ants for a while.... 8.2/10
This was all awhile ago, so there might actually have been more movies I saw. I will work up some more reviews. Otherwise, I will also update on films coming out and films that have been out for some time that I just recently saw.
Catch ya' later!
