Writers Talk 'Star Trek 2' Villains and Setting

"Star Trek" anticipation is high right now since Paramount recently set a release date of June 29, 2012 for the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ reboot. Luckily "Star Trek 2" writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman sat down with The Geek Files and gave another update with a hint of the various directions they might take the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the villains they may encounter.

On the setting for the story, Orci explained: "We would never do a remake....it will be some time in the five-year mission. But that is a question. Should we pick them up immediately the next day or should it be later, we are still discussing that."

So while speculation of immediately following "Star Trek" with a return to "The Wrath of Kahn" seemed like a logical conclusion, the writers don't sound too eager to remake any of the original films. But they know that they're going to need to tread the same path that Kahn did as far as providing a worthy adversary for Kirk and his crew.

"I think our idea on this is that the first of any series is about them coming together or the formation," Kurtzman said. "I couldn't really tell you what Jeff Bridges was doing in 'Iron Man,' but it doesn't matter at all because it is all about Iron Man becoming Iron Man.

"Whereas I think sequels are very much about the villain. Because while [in the first one] the villain serves to bring the crew together, the second one I think has to be a true challenging of what that family is about. That is why 'Wrath of Khan' was so amazing. Khan tested each one of them and ultimately asked for the ultimately sacrifice, and that is why that movie held up so well."

Both writers agree there is much more pressure to deliver this time round and that just because they have a successful beginning under their belt doesn't mean they can breathe a sigh of relief.

"Frankly I feel more pressure because we were so confident when we came up with the idea of how to bridge canon, and yet free ourselves from canon," Orci said. "Now we have no excuses for anything, now we are free. Now we don't have the benefit of low expectations."

In fact, these expectations are nothing short of massive, and it'll take a lot to follow up the equally massive success of the first one. But it sounds like Kurtzman/Orci are up to the task.

As for dream projects, Kurtzman said: "I would like to take a run at 'Indiana Jones,' but that is a pretty closed door, so not sure that is ever going to happen." Orci joked that they would like to remake 'Star Wars.'

'Star Trek 2' Will Beam Into Theaters Summer 2012

It looks like Paramount Pictures has decided on a tentative release date for the anticipated "Untitled Star Trek Sequel" as it stakes claim to June 29, 2012.

That’s two and a half years away, coming out just a few short months before that Mayan calendar runs out.

The date that’s apparently been set is a great one for the type of sure-fire-hit "Star Trek 2" will be, as it’s the first Friday before the July 4th weekend in 2012, and currently it’s the only big movie scheduled to hit theaters that month. Expect more films to be announced for 2012 as we actually get closer to that year.

Apart from the fact that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are returning to write the script – with "Lost" co-creator/writer/exec producer Damon Lindelof jumping on-board to help out – and that most of the cast will most likely be returning, we don’t really know anything about the "Star Trek" sequel.

Will Abrams return to direct? Who will be the villain this time around? Will there be political and social metaphors in the film like the original series? Heck, what will the basic plot of the film be? It’s all just speculation at this point.

What do you think of the "Star Trek" sequel getting a summer 2012 release date? Were you hoping for sooner? What would you like to see in the next film – a better villain, more action sequences or more character interaction?

As stated, "Star Trek 2" is tentatively set to hits theaters on June 29, 2012.

7 Couples Retreat $4.2 M

8 Paranormal Activity $4.2 M

9 Law Abiding Citizen $3.9 M

10 The Box $3.1 M

The end of the world proved to be a massive attraction for moviegoers as Roland Emmerich's "2012" opened this weekend with an earth-shattering $225 million at the worldwide box office.

Ticket sales in the US and Canada brought in $65 million, with a foreign tally of $160 million from 105 countries.

Sony's Columbia Pictures said the film scored the highest worldwide opening for an original film not based on an established franchise, brand or best-seller.

In global terms, it ranks No. 9 for film openings, behind (from No. 1-8) "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "Spider-Man 3," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and "The Da Vinci Code."

It surpassed June's worldwide opening for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" but not that film's North American opening of $109 million.

The foreign box office opening for "2012" is the fifth highest of all time. The North American box office opening is marginally below the $68 million for Emmerich's 2004 disaster flick "The Day After Tomorrow," but beat the American debuts of all other movies in the disaster genre including the filmmaker's "Independence Day" from 1996 and "Godzilla" from 1998.

Other films are just surviving the earthquakes and floods. They made some money while worrying about what happens when it really is the year 2012.
Well, NASA is here to quell those fears!

Next weekend, the female audience flocks to "New Moon." Will that film survive the end of the world?

'Star Trek' Director and Writers Discuss Sequel

One of the best movies of the 2009 summer season was definitely "Star Trek." The franchise has been completely rebooted and the DVD/Blu-ray of the film will be hitting shelves next month. It may be odd to hear news about a sequel right now, but Paramount is doing a big promo for its DVD release, which is why J.J. Abrams and writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are out talking with press (via Collider). The sequel is just barely being developed, and even though they're still "just brainstorming," the ideas seem to be there, and the three each hint at what we might see in a sequel.

Let’s start with J.J. Abrams talking about shooting "Star Trek 2" in 3-D. Here is a snippet of what the director had to say on the subject:

"Paramount talked to me about doing the first one in 3-D and, having it only be my second film, I was petrified just at the addition of it. I thought it would be another dimension of pain-in-the-ass. I was just like, 'I want to make a decent 2-D movie.'…I’m open to looking at it ’cause now I feel a little bit more comfortable. And, if I, in fact, direct the 'Star Trek' sequel, 3-D could be really fun, so I’m open to it…"

Well with every film new and old getting the 3-D treatment these days, why not "Star Trek," right? But is the film Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci cooking up the kind that will warrant 3-D?

Here are some of the quotes from Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci about where they are in the scripting process for "Star Trek 2":

Bob: We’re still just brainstorming, internally. We’re going to get together soon and see what happens, and start putting it together.

Alex: Where we’re starting is, “Okay, where are our characters now? What are interesting complications that we can put in their lives? What feels like an organic emotional place for us to get to? How do we want to test them?” And then, you look at everything and start asking, “Who would be the best foe?”

Bob: There are mental exercises we play. You can’t be a fan of this and not sit around and wonder.

Alex: But, the short answer is that we haven’t landed on anybody yet.
So if they can now start to explore some more broader ideas and tests of character in the sequel, where might they go? Let's turn to Abrams, who has a lot of great things to say about a sequel.

"In going forward, the fun of this movie series is that we will have the opportunity, given its alternate timeline, to cross paths with any of the experiences, places and characters that existed in The Original Series, but we have to be really careful, doing that. I don't want to do something that is so inside that only die-hard fans will appreciate. We're just now working on the script and just beginning the process of story breaking, but I guarantee you, whatever the story is and whatever the final movie ends up being, I know it will be something that will work on its own terms and be something that you don't need to know and study Star Trek to get, but if you are a fan, there will hopefully be gift after gift of connections, references and characters that you hold near and dear. At least, that's the intent."

That is a lot of information to digest. I’ve only included small portions of "Star Trek" news from these Collider interviews - if you want to hear more on the subject, or updates on "Mission: Impossible 4," "Transformers 3," "View Master," "Fringe" and "Cowboys and Aliens," you can click on the links below for full transcripts of the interviews.

What do you think about the latest updates on "Star Trek 2"? do you agree that the filmmakers have their heads in the right place? And what do you think the sequel should be about?

"Revenge of the Fallen's" first day included an estimated $16 million from its midnight opening. Only "The Dark Knight" and "Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith" had bigger midnight debuts, pulling in $18.5 million and $16.5 million, respectively.

'Star Trek 2'

Script writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kutzman sat down recently with SciFiWire to discuss their thoughts on "Star Trek’s" success, where they might take the franchise down the road and what type of story the sequel might follow. Both writers have their heads together when they both have the same thought for the franchise: DON’T LET IT SUCK!

There is nothing set in stone as far as they are concerned and they haven’t even started working on a script yet (unless you count agreeing to do another movie as working). Orci said during the interview:

“We’re going to start thinking about it any second now. But we’re still just having a mental sorbet before we jump back in. And, you know, just seeing all the reactions to the movie. We want to make sure we take it all in and really figure out what worked and what didn’t and proceed from there. But now that we have … an open canvas, … anything can happen.”

Hopefully "Star Trek 2" will be as good as "Star Trek", but it all starts with the story and if they don’t pick the right one to tell in "Star Trek 2" then the whole franchise will fail before it really ever gets started. Orci has a grasp of that concept though:

“[you] just can’t use old things willy-nilly,… there’s still an internal logic that has to be followed. … We could still cross some lines [if] we think, “Oh, we can do anything now.” And a savvy fan will go, “Well, technically, [you can't].”

He is right on that statement because some plot points and questions about physics are to be expected; it is, after all, a science fiction movie about traveling through space with aliens while moving faster than the speed of light.

As far as the story goes, Orci and Kutzman aren’t sure if they will follow a new original concept that stays within the parameters of the Trek universe, re-tell another modified story from the show or mash the two ideas together. I wouldn’t plan on hearing anything about the script either until after "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" (they wrote that too) starts winding down and they have time to regroup their thoughts.

Reviews, Reviews and Reviews

Was finally able to watch some movies over this past weekend thanks to the awesomeness that is summer. Some were good, others were slightly entertaining.

Star Trek -The new "Star Trek" film was needed. The franchise had floundered and lost its way in mediocre television shows and films. While I am not a Trekkie (or Trekker) and do not know much about the original shows or films, I am surrounded by people who do. Finally seeing the film for myself made me excited to learn about all the past history of the franchise, but those who know it like the back of their hand explained almost everything to me.

The film follows more special effects battles along the lines of "Star Wars," but creates a new timeline for the original characters of "Star Trek" to live in (and for the writers to freely create something new). I believe this film will overall satisfy fans of "Star Trek" and people seeing it for the first time.

8.5/10

Fanboys- On the subject of geekiness and "Star Trek," "Fanboys" is an interesting take on the ultimate "Star Wars" fans, but it feels a little late. True, this movie was supposed to come out a few years ago or so (major delays from the studio) but if you love "Star Wars" it will still feel fresh and exciting. Lots of awesome cameos and many spoofs on the original trilogy will keeps fans happy.

"Trek" does play a role in this film as the opposite of "Star Wars." I don't know for myself whether "Trek" and "Wars" fans really do try to kill each other (I know many people who are fans of both), but the ensuing battles in the film are quite funny to watch. Strictly a film for geek fans though, others might not enjoy if not in the intended target audience.

6.8/10

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - Don't see this movie. If you don't like the "Street Fighter" video game series, don't see it. If you do, don't see it. Terrible acting, terrible fighting, terrible effects, terrible story and terrible acting (twice for its terribleness).

I actually enjoy the original "Street Fighter" movie due to its awesome cheese factor, but this movie was serious and failed. The fights were short and dumb. The spinning bird kick move (famous from the game) is literally a blur and looks terrible (TERRIBLE!). And Kristin Kreuk...yeah....no.

3.3/10

Monsters vs. Aliens - Dreamworks was fine with its original "Shrek" (and the second one too) and "Kung Fu Panda". This film starts off fine with the introduction of the characters, but the second half of the film (taking place on a spaceship) loses some of its thunder as the character Susan has an entire personality change due to a pep talk.

I may be biased on this because that is a flaw that always ticks me off whenever I see it in a movie. A single pep talk does not change a person's personality so much that they act completely different in the next scene. While the movie delivered on visuals, it lacked on characters and plot. A sequel should not be made as the characters will not be as interesting the second time around.

6.2/10

Star Trek Sequel Details Continued

J.J. Abrams chatted with MTV News recently about the blockbuster film "Star Trek," and while he's not necessarily confirmed for a sequel, writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orco are, so there are some good ideas out there. "The fun of this [new alternate Trek reality] is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands - it's not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series," he says. "Believe me, whether it's William Shatner or Khan … it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas." If you're a big Trek fan, now you may understand why it was a good idea to use an alternate reality storyline - almost everyone still exists, or can exist, and could appear at anytime.

So what of the infamous "Star Trek II" villain Kahn Noonien Singh, played originally by Ricardo Montalban? He's a fan favorite and we have heard Kurtzman and Orci say that they referenced that movie quite a bit. "It'll be fun to hear what Alex and Bob are thinking about Khan," Abrams teases. "The fun of this timeline is arguing that different stories, with the same characters, could be equally if not more compelling than what's been told before." So what he means exactly is that, "[Khan and Kirk] exist - and while their history may not be exactly as people are familiar with, I would argue that a person's character is what it is."

"I wouldn't rule out anything," Abrams hints in regards to the possible appearance of William Shatner in future sequels. "The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have the restrictions we had coming into this one. And one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead.

"But this all assumes that there's another story that's going to be told," Abrams cautioned, saying that there's a lot of work to be done before such ideas can be sorted out. "We're all still coming down from making this movie."

Lens Flares in Star Trek

According to First Showing, "Once everyone finally gets to see 'Star Trek' next weekend, one complaint that I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot of will be in regards to the excessive use of lens flares. Director J.J. Abrams and his cinematographer Daniel Mindel use them a lot, we're talking about in almost every scene, and multiple times in every scene. We did quote Mindel at one point, who explained that at least on the Bridge of the USS Enterprise, he used those flares to give a 'very realistic feel to an otherwise static scene.'"

I haven't seen the movie yet but from what I can tell from the above image (and the video below), if that keeps happening someone is bound to get a seizure.
What does J.J. Abrams have to say about the excessive use of lens flares?

"It was one of those things... I wanted a visual system that felt unique. I know there are certain shots where even I watch and think, 'Oh that's ridiculous, that was too many.' But I love the idea that the future was so bright it couldn't be contained in the frame.

The flares weren't just happening from on-camera light sources, they were happening off camera, and that was really the key to it. I want [to create] the sense that, just off camera, something spectacular is happening. There was always a sense of something, and also there is a really cool organic layer that's a quality of it. They were all done live, they weren't added later. There are something about those flares, especially in a movie that can potentially be very sterile and CG and overly controlled. There is something incredibly unpredictable and gorgeous about them. It is a really fun thing. Our DP would be off camera with this incredibly powerful flashlight aiming it at the lens. It became an art because different lenses required angles, and different proximity to the lens. Sometimes, when we were outside we'd use mirrors. Certain sizes were too big... literally, it was ridiculous. It was like another actor in the scene...."

He actually made some sense with that. I hope it really isn't that much. It can really be a distraction in the film.

Star Trek Has Premiered

An audience arrived at the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin, Texas, expecting to watch "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan," the second in a series of "Star Trek" films that came out in 1982.

In addition of seeing this movie, they were going to get to see 10 minutes of never before scene footage from the new "Star Trek" movie that comes out May 8 in the USA (but had its premiere in Australia).

There was an introduction by writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who also wrote "Transformers," along with producer Damon Lindelof. Afterwards the second "Star Trek" film in the series began.

However a few minutes in, something apparently went wrong, the film broke and melted and the audience was left sitting there.
The writers and producer of the new film came out again to ignore the technical difficulties and get to the footage of their new film.

Then a man wearing a trenchcoat and a hat walked to the front of the room.

That is right. Everyone in that audience got to see the entire "Star Trek" film and also see Leonard Nimoy! That is awesome!

After the film was done, Nimoy and the others came out to say goodnight.

And the online reviews have been spreading like lice through a kindergarten class (great imagery there).

There are just so many of them out there that putting them all here would take up so much space. If you want to check out some reviews of the new "Star Trek" film (all spoiler free, of course), then click on any of these links.

Star Trek II On Its Way

According to Variety, "As Paramount Pictures readies the May 8 release of its 'Star Trek' franchise relaunch, the studio is moving forward with a sequel, and has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen the screenplay.

J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the latest chapter, is onboard to produce the follow-up alongside his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk. No decision has been made yet on whether Abrams will return behind the camera for the sequel.

Story is still in the embryonic stage, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to the Melrose studio by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release.

'There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet,' said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC's 'Lost' who produced the upcoming 'Trek' but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman's screenplay. 'But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.'

As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

'Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,' he said. 'With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do.'"

Obviously Paramount is very excited about this franchise and they hope to remake it for the next generation and have plenty of sequels. The hype seems to be pretty big for this film if a sequel is already underway. It isn't that unexpected when you realize the film has broken records for the amount of times the trailer was watched on Apple.com.

New Star Trek Trailer

Hey readers, I saw "Watchmen" early this morning, but I am still working on my review and getting past the fog of a four hour sleep.
The review should be coming up later tonight.
But for now, enjoy the new trailer for "Star Trek" which came online a few hours before "Watchmen" hit theaters.

From director J.J. Abrams and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, “Star Trek,” featuring a young, new crew venturing boldly where no man has gone before.

Clips and Featurettes for Transformers, Watchmen and more

A clip from "Watchmen" showing the entire fight scene from a prison riot.
Watch as Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II kick some prisoner butt.

Not gonna lie when I say that wasn't really that exciting. I consider some the fight slo-mo fights in "300" just to be eye-catching while this was...just a prison fight.
I don't know what else to say.

Watch Michael Bay blow sh*t up in this featurette for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Lots of explosions. Oooooh.

In "Land of the Lost," there are really big mosquitoes. Really big. And gross. Don't believe me? Watch this.

I don't know whether to say that was funny or just stare at the frigging bug. That freaked me out. Seriously.

"Star Trek" fans (or hopeful fans), watch this featurette. There is no real theme to it, it is kind of just showing off J.J. Abrams and his awesomeness with this movie.

I never watched the original show, but I feel like this reboot of the franchise will get younger audiences to want to get into the "Star Trek" phenomena.

"Donnie Darko" is a great movie. It is just so strange and out there. Not to mention original. The sequel will have to really try to sell itself to me because the idea of a grop of individuals trying to save the universe (that is what it looks like to me) doesn't seem as fun as one guy trying to figure things out on his own.

"S. Darko" takes place in the summer of 1995, seven years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko’s younger sister, Samantha (Daveigh Chase), who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance. She and her best friend Corey (Evigan) set off on a road trip to Hollywood in a bid to ‘make it big’, but their journey is cut short when their car breaks down unexpectedly, leaving them stranded in a small desert town. When a meteorite happens to crash-land nearby, Samantha is plagued by bizarre visions telling of the universe’s end and it appears that their breakdown was part of some grander plan. When she finds out she was actually adopted by the Darkos, and that she is in no way related to Donnie, she must face her own demons and, in doing so, save the world and herself.

All these nice goodies rolled into one post!
