Movies coming out this week!
Did You Hear About the Morgans? - In New York City, an estranged couple (Grant and Parker) who witness a murder are relocated to small-town Wyoming as part of a witness-protection program.
Avatar - A paraplegic former marine (Worthington) accepts a unique mission that sends him to the planet Pandora, where, through a connection to a remotely controlled biological body, he learns the way of the indigenous Na'vi people. His link to this world puts him in direct opposition with his orders to infiltrate the Na'vi and remove the barrier between them and the precious ore desired by military and corporate interests.

7 2012 $4.4 M
8 Old Dogs $4.3 M
9 Armored $3.5 M
10 Ninja Assassin $2.7 M
Disney right now has three films in the Top Ten ("Princess and Frog," "A Christmas Carol" and "Old Dogs) and is doing well. But I'm sure the studio was hoping for a larger opening release for "The Princess and the Frog." And with "Avatar" coming out next week...can the Disney cartoon save 2-D films or not?
"The Blind Side" continues to be an unexpected box office juggernaut. "New Moon" also continues as it is an expected box office juggernaut. The question is do we prefer the expected ones or the surprise hits?
Drama and action fills out the rest of the slots. The big question is how big will "Avatar" be next weekend? Can it stand up against these other films and its $200 million budget? We'll have to wait and see.

Box Office results for the weekend!
1 Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs$24.6 M
2 Surrogates$15.0 M
3 Fame $10.0 M
4 The Informant! $6.9 M
5 Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself $4.7 M
6 Pandorum $4.4 M
7 Love Happens $4.3 M
8 Jennifer's Body $3.5 M
9 9 $2.8 M
10 Inglorious Basterds $2.7 M
"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" takes the weekend again, but the numbers are so low from last weekend and this one that it still isn't really raking in a profit yet. If it makes No. 1 next weekend it may have a chance.
"Surrogates" didn't do as well as many had hoped (the Kid Factor wins out again). And "Fame" just didn't have an audience. I know only one person who has an interest in seeing this movie.
"Pandorum" doesn't have many theaters but it also didn't have much of an audience. The sci-fi people went to go see "Surrogates" instead.
Other films keep petering out. "Inglourious Basterds" is hanging in there but won't make the Top Ten next weekend (neither will "9" or "Jennifer's Body").
Next weekend actually has a lot of movies coming out at once. Will the Kid Factor dominate once again or will another film take the top spot? Anyone willing to bet on "Zombieland" doing well (I know I am going to see it)?

Fame - A remake of the 1980s musical centered on the teachers and students at the prestigious New York City High School of Performing Arts.
Pandorum - A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities.
Coco Before Chanel - The story of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (Tautou) and her rise from obscure beginnings to the heights of the fashion world.
Paranormal Activity - While settling into her new home, Katie (Featherston) is disturbed in her sleep by a mysterious presence. Her husband, Micah (Sloat), tries to ease her fear by installing video cameras in an attempt to capture the strange behavior on tape. Bad idea.

6 9 $5.4 M
7 Inglorious Basterds $3.6 M
8 All About Steve$3.4 M
9 Sorority Row $2.4 M
10 The Final Destination $2.3 M
The Kid Factor wins again! Also the extra bucks from being 3-D probably helped as well. But seriously, "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" is the only movie people went to see this past weekend. All other films choked on those balls.
Why? Well "The Informant" had terrible marketing (I still have seen no trailers on it), "Love Happens" is a romantic comedy showing at the end of summer (worst time for that genre) and "Jennifer's Body" was a hot topic to discuss but not to see (Megan Fox, you are not a leading lady, go back to the robots, Tyler Perry did better than you).
Other films are getting pushed down the list (notice "Whiteout" is already gone), and I love how "9" is actually doing well despite its low amount of theaters (just saw it this past weekend.
Next weekend...I'm going with "Surrogates" just because it looks awesome. But the 'artistic' people will flock to "Fame." And don't forget the Kid Factor still remains.

Summer Movies of '09
This is a follow-up to my very first post from last year and to review most of the films I saw this past summer. Also, coincidentally, this is post No. 1,000. Sweet.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - This is the third film in the "Ice Age" franchise and another film thrown into the 3-D mix. I enjoyed the first film and can honestly say the I don't remember much of the second (I just remember it not being that great). This film, while taking the plot straight from "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with some "Moby Dick," is actually entertaining at some points (I chalk all the real humor to the new character Buck, voiced by Simon Pegg). Also noticed there was a lot more Scrat (the squirrel creature who loves nuts) in this film than in the others. Guess the filmmakers realized he was a popular character.
6.8/10
District 9 - This is one good film. It is unique and amazingly made for its low budget. Even the documentary style of the film isn't too bad because the perspective switches from that to narrative cinema several times throughout the movie (especially during the awesome gunfight at the climax). If you are any kind of sci fi fan this is a must see.
8.8/10
(500) Days of Summer - This is not a romantic comedy. This is not a chick flick. It is a story about life, love and relationships. The film jumps around a lot over the course of the 500 days, but first time director Marc Webb is able to make the story understandable to the audience. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are just great actors and have very good chemistry in this film. If you're tired of those giant Hollywood blockbuster films and just want to relax, this is the perfect movie for you. There is even a song and dance number (I loved it even though I am not a fan of musicals).
8.5/10
Inglourious Basterds - Quentin Tarantino is a fantastic director and his newest film fits in perfect with all his others. Why? Because of the amazing dialogue. Though "Death Proof" is not high on my list of Tarantino films (besides the car chase scene it was all dialogue), "Basterds" has a good enough blend between dialogue and action to satisfy the audience. Not to mention that almost all the dialogue is used to create tension in many of the scenes so you can't look away. A story well told in Nazi occupied France.
8.3/10
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - I did not like the first "Transformers" film because I thought it could have been a lot better than it was. I did not have much hope for this next film and that is a good thing because now I am just pissed off at Hollywood. I'm sorry, but special effects do not make a movie. Yes, the effects in the film are phenomenal. But the plot, acting and pretty much everything else was like nails on a chalkboard. Right now I can still not even explain what happened in the film. Again, this movie could have been so great (giant freaking robots, c'mon), but everything just fell through. Doesn't matter though because it has made tones of money and I know a third film will be coming out. If they can get rid of the stupid humor in the next one, so many people will like it (and parents will actually want to bring their kids to see it too).
5.3/10
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Holy cow, they are getting older. Things are finally coming to a head in the Harry Potter franchise as the next two films will deliver the final book of the series. As for this sixth installment, it mixes the ever-present darkness with lots of light humor about relationships. A fine addition to the franchise but it is merely a stepping stone to the grand finale that will be the "Deathly Hollows."
7.3/10
G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra - I was expecting this film to be along the line of "Transformers" and suck, but it actually turned out to be an entertaining popcorn flick. The acting and plot (though still not the best) were way better in "G.I. Joe" than "Transformers" (but the latter film wins with tons better special effects). The constant action will keep you entertained instead of having a few action scenes spread out with a bunch of stupidity. Yo' Joe!
6.5/10
Angels and Demons - I thought this book was better than "The Da Vinci Code" and I came up with the same result with the films. While I believe the movie would have been better if it had stuck more to the book (the villain was entirely changed), it still had a better story and more action than "Da Vinci Code."
6.3/10
Gamer - A film with an interesting concept but failed to really deliver. The movie is more like a really geeky teenager's dream of the future. The concept seemed really cool and I was hoping to see how the interactions worked between the people being controlled and the people doing the controlling, but sadly that was left out to capitalize on the crazy action and sexuality. Too bad since the film is pretty short and the payoff at the end isn't that great.

Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News
Movies coming out this week!
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - Inspired by the children's book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain.
Love Happens - On a business trip to Seattle, a popular self-help guru (Eckhart) sparks with a woman (Aniston) who attends one of his seminars. Their connection causes his to realize, however, that he hasn't truly confronted his wife's recent passing.
Jennifer's Body - A cheerleader at a small midwestern high school becomes possessed by a demon and sets out to kill off all the guys in town.
Movies coming out on DVD and Blu-ray!
Box Office results for the weekend!
1 I Can Do Bad All by Myself $24M
2 9 $10.9M $
3 Inglourious Basterds $6.55M
4 All About Steve $5.8M
5 The Final Destination $5.5M
6 Sorority Row $5.27M
7 Whiteout $5.1M
8 District 9 $3.6M
9 Julie & Julia $3.3M
10 Gamer $3.15M
Tyler Perry continues his winning streak with "I Can Do Bad All by Myself." It didn't make as much as "Madea Goes to Jail," but that can be chalked up to not having Madea's name in the title of the film.
"9" did better than expected, beating out both "Whiteout" and "Sorority Row." Those films did terrible. Three other films from previous weekends beat them out. The terrible reviews didn't help them, but more likely the terrible films truly screwed them.
Next week we have a romance movie, a kid flick and a horror film with Megan Fox. Who will take the weekend?

Movies coming out this week!

Extract - The owner of a flower-extract plant (Bateman), tries to contend with myriad personal and professional problems, such as his potentially unfaithful wife (Wiig), a hot new temp (Kunis), and employees who want to take advantage of him.
Carriers - Four young people speed across the Southwestern U.S. in a desperate attempt to outrun a viral pandemic. Over the course of a few days, tough moral decisions will have to be made if they have any chance at survival.
All About Steve - After Mary Horowitz (Bullock) has one date with a CNN cameraman (Cooper), the brilliant crossword-puzzle constructor decides the hunk is her true love. Box Office results for the weekend!
1 The Final Destination$28.3 M
2 Inglorious Basterds $20.0 M
3 Halloween II $17.4 M
4 District 9 $10.7 M
5 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra $8.0 M
6 Julie & Julia $7.4 M
7 The Time Traveler's Wife $6.7 M
8 Shorts $4.8 M
9 Taking Woodstock $3.7 M
10 G-Force $2.8 M
Clearly the 3-D helped "Final Destination" make its way to the top (paying that extra money helps them, not you). The big question is can survive until next weekend? Probably not.
"Inglourious Basterds" actually is doing well and shows off its staying power. People like Tarantino.
Maybe not Rob Zombie so much because "Halloween 2" failed to deliver on its predecessor (which may be the real reason this movie failed since people didn't like it).
Other films keep falling except for the other opening last weekend, "Taking Woodstock." It didn't have a spectacular opening because hippies have kind of died out, but Woodstock lives forever.
Next weekend I expect "Gamer" to dominate only because of the rise of video games.

9 The Ugly Truth $2.8 M
10 Post Grad $2.8 M
"Inglourious Basterds" is the biggest Tarantino opening ever, by a hefty $12.5m over "Kill Bill Vol. 2" ($24.1 M domestically).
Other films dropped, but not by much given other releases this past weekend failed to make much of an impact on the Top 10. "Shorts" failed miserably and Robert Rodriguez should stay away from children movies from now on. "Spy Kids" is done with.
Somehow "G-Force" keeps going strong and "Harry Potter 6" is just about to crack $900 M worldwide. Now that made some money as "Post Grad" did not. Nor do I expect a lot of these lower numbered films to be here next weekend as two horror films come out as well as a nice hippie flick.

Box Office results for the weekend!
1 Inglorious Basterds $37.6 M
2 District 9 $18.9 M
3 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra $12.5 M
4 The Time Traveler's Wife $10.0 M
5 Julie & Julia $9.0 M
6 Shorts $6.6 M
7 G-Force $4.2 M
8 Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince $3.5 M

'Inglourious Basterds' Trailer Spoof
This Friday, Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated film "Inglourious Basterds" bludgeons its way onto theater screens in what is sure to be a bloody, violent and dialog heavy film.
The guys over at Gamer Vision put together a humorous "Inglourious Basterds" parody video involving Toadsworth as Brad Pitt (funny mustache and all), Mario, Luigi, Toadstool and the Princess playing the parts of the Basterds and Koopa and his henchman playing the parts of the Nazis.
Check out the video below and compare it to the real "Inglourious Basterds" trailer.
It is actually quite entertaining and makes me want to see a new "Super Mario Bros." movie, except...you know...it should be good.

Box Office results for the weekend!
1 District 9 $37.0 M
2 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra $22.5 M
3 The Time Traveler's Wife $19.2 M
4 Julie & Julia $12.4 M
5 G-Force $6.9 M
6 The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard $5.3 M
7 Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince $5.1 M
8 The Ugly Truth $4.5 M
9 Ponyo $3.5 M
10 500 Days of Summer $3.0 M
The differences between "G.I. Joe" and "District 9" (saw "D-9" over weekend, great movie!) couldn't be more clear. One had a budget north of $200m (if you include marketing) while the other had the name brand power of Peter Jackson. I wonder if this will send a message to Hollywood?
A 59 percent drop for "G.I Joe." It actually outperformed "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" percentage-wise in its second weekend – but without that Wednesday opening. And of course "Transformers 2" had made nearly $300 m domestically once the second weekend ended, "G.I. Joe" is just about to crack $100m.
"Ponyo" and "500 Days of Summer" (saw "500 Days" over the weekend too, another great movie!) have only limited theaters, so they won't be making lots of money. Neither will "The Goods" because it is a comedy with little marketing. And what the heck happened to "Bandslam"? Yeah, it didn't even crack the top 10.
Can "District 9" stay on top next weekend or will Quentin Tarantino's new movie win it all?

Tarantino Confirms 'Inglourious Basterds' Final Runtime
About few weeks ago, it was reported that Quentin Tarantino was going to be re-editing his WWII film "Inglourious Basterds," even adding some scenes and thus adding a lot more to the almost two-and-a-half hour Cannes version runtime.
After that news, a rumor surfaced that the Weinsteins were pressuring him to cut a shocking 40 minutes from the reported, “contractually obligated,” 2 hour 48 minute length. However, just over two weeks later, Harvey Weinstein came out and called the 40 minute cut report a load of rubbish. He also said that Tarantino was just re-organizing some scenes, and even said he was begging Tarantino to include a lot of the stuff (instead of the other way around).
Now we get word from Tarantino himself that the final runtime of "Inglourious Basterds" is a full ONE MINUTE longer than the Cannes cut.
In an interview with Variety’s BFDealMemo, Tarantino spoke about the whole runtime business, separating fact from fiction, as well as what he’s added to/changed about the film. Here’s some of what he had to say [Warning: moderate SPOILER warning]:
“I’ve heard these rumors that the studios told me to cut out 40 minutes. These are complete lies. The movie is actually a minute longer, in running time, than it was in Cannes. It was 2:28, without end credits, and now it’s 2:29, or 2:32 with end credits.”
“I added a sequence between where Mike Myers and Michael Fassbender discuss Operation Kino [the plot to blow up a theater as Joseph Goebbels and other Nazi brass watch a film], and the shootout scene in the basement tavern La Louisiane. In Cannes, we went from one to the other. I’d shot another scene, right before that, where Fassbender meets The Basterds, before they go to La Louisiane. That’s back.”
“It might sound weird that I added a minute, but you can add little things and actually quicken the pace, and we were very aware of keeping the pace up. To add the one scene, I reduced a couple scenes by a line here, a line there.”
Hopefully anything else cut from the film will wind up on the DVD and Blu-ray.

Weinstein Company Not Cutting 'Inglourious Basterds'

Well, in an interview with GQ, Harvey Weinstein has said that the news of cutting 40 minutes out of "Inglourious Basterds" is false.
“Those stories are all untrue. There’s no fu**ing way. Here, read my lips: That is nuts. Please don’t even write that, it’s insanity. There’s not even a question of that. Whatever you’re reading, it’s like some insane blogger… There’s no truth to any of this. He’s not gonna cut. What he’s doing is just reorganizing some scenes. I mean, the guy had six weeks to cut his movie [for Cannes]; most guys take six months. Most guys take a year.
When I worked with Martin [Scorsese], we’d do eighteen months in post-production. Quentin Tarantino cuts a movie in six weeks? Come on, there’s sh** on that cutting-room floor that’ll blow your brains out. I was telling Quentin the opposite-”You should put that sh** back in the movie.” There’s scenes with Brad Pitt and the Basterds, and I’m praying he puts that sh** back in, ‘cause it’s un-fu**ing-believably great. Listen-this movie will be between two hours and twenty minutes and two hours and twenty-seven minutes. I don’t think it’s going to be shorter-it’s just a question of rearranging. I know he’s putting footage back into the movie. I know he’s got some cool sh** that he didn’t get time to address.”
Wow. You have to love Harvey Weinstein. He has a way of putting words together that sound both good and bad at the same time. The guy doesn't take sh*t from anyone and it looks like he was more than happy to say that those "insane bloggers" were full of sh*t with that rumor.
But indeed this is good news as I was hoping to see the full movie when it comes out August 21.

Weinstein Company Trying to Cut 40 Minutes From 'Inglourious Basterds'
The Weinstein Company is on the brink of financial ruin, and according to The Wrap, they have three big hits that need to make money: "Inglourious Basterds," "H2: Halloween 2," and Rob Marshall's "Nine."
"But here’s what we know: the company needs a big hit, and soon. Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ premiered to mixed reviews at the Cannes Festival. Weinstein and coproducer Universal are both trying to convince Tarantino to cut it by 40 minutes. (It’s now 2’40”, and considered too long a sit, especially for American audiences.)"
The Wrap actually got the running time wrong, as the version shown at Cannes ran 2 hours, 28 minutes. This isn't the first time we've heard that Tarantino would be making some changes from the version he showed in France. At the end of the fest, Tarantino started telling the press that he would be going back into the editing room for "Basterds," potentially adding a new scene in the middle of the movie. All of this is happening because the reaction in Cannes wasn't as positive as they (meaning Tarantino and Harvey Weinstein) had hoped it would be. But they better not cut out 40 minutes of it!
Ben Kenigsberg at Time Out Chicago wrote a piece titled "Don't cut Inglourious Basterds, you basterds!" Here's an excerpt:
"All I can say—as someone who thought 'Basterds' was the unquestionable highlight of this year's Cannes competition—is that cutting won't remove what's strange about the film; it'll just ruin its pacing and structure—and probably outrage QT's sizable fanbase. The charge against the movie is that it's 'talky' and that too much of it is subtitled to appeal to a mass audience. But if any contemporary filmmaker has proven that large swaths of dialogue can be compelling, even profitable, it's Tarantino."
Hopefully the film will not be cut, but if it is the full length will most likely come out on DVD.
I'd rather see the full version in theaters. Would you?

Tarantino To Re-Edit Inglourious Basterds?

According to Screen Rant, "Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming WWII film 'Inglourious Basterds' premiered at the Cannes Film Festival the other day to mostly positive reviews, with one person even calling it his best work since 'Pulp Fiction.' The cut people saw at Cannes was 2 hours 27 minutes, a fair length for a movie that’s reportedly made up of mostly dialogue-driven scenes. And yet it seems that may not be the version the general public will end up getting: We will most likely see an even longer cut.
From Tarantino himself comes the word that his Cannes-cut of 'Inglourious Basterds' is over 20 minutes short of the 2 hours and 48 minutes he is contractually obligated to produce. So what does this mean for the movie? Well, it appears that to make up the time, Tarantino will be re-editing the movie post-Cannes, changing things here and there and perhaps even adding an entire scene.
Some of the negative reviews have criticized 'Basterds' for seeming incomplete, the reason some people are citing that is the fact that he rushed like crazy to get it done in time for Cannes. Some people are saying that he should have taken his time, and presented a rougher edit of the movie, play it out of competition, and thus he would have avoided such criticism."
A longer version of the movie? That is like receiving the director's cut of the film in theaters! But why is it in the contract to make such a long movie?

Inglourious Basterds
"Inglourious Basterds" stars Diane Kruger, who had her breakout role as Helen in "Troy." Now she stars in Tarantino’s newest film as German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark who works with Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) who is organizing a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich.
The “New York Times Magazine” interviewed Quentin Tarantino and Diane Kruger about "Basterds."
The interview — which you can watch below — is part of the Sunday, May 3 feature in the magazine titled “The Call Back” by Lynn Hirschberg, which includes photos of Kruger and Tarantino taken by Jean-Baptiste Mondino and a quick interview with Tarantino.
Below are three questions directed to Tarantino about his newest film which comes out August 21, 2009.
When you’re making a film, like this year’s "Inglourious Basterds," which will premiere at Cannes, is it hard to watch movies?
Maybe it’s just this movie, but it’s become very hard to concentrate on anything but the film I’m making. This was the hardest movie I’ve ever made.
"Inglourious Basterds" is a World War II epic that combines historical events with a vivid, pop sensibility. The movie stars, among others, Brad Pitt as an American lieutenant in search of Nazis and Diane Kruger as a German movie star/spy. It’s both authentic and highly theatrical. Did you shoot on soundstages in America or in Europe?
We shot the film in Berlin and a little bit in Paris. I only cast actors who could speak English with their native accents. The Germans have accents, the French are French, and the English are English. During the war, your understanding of German, whether you were a French citizen or you were in a concentration camp, meant the difference between life and death. In Hollywood movies, Germans often have English accents, and I can’t go for that contrivance. The proper accent could be the difference between success and failure.
On this movie, you worked very quickly. Was that partially to have the film ready in time for Cannes?
Yes. I wanted to have a masterpiece before the decade’s out.

"Angels and Demons"
The team behind the global phenomenon "The Da Vinci Code" returns for the highly anticipated "Angels & Demons," based upon the bestselling novel by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. Ron Howard again directs the film, which is produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and John Calley. The screenplay is by David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman.
When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati - the most powerful underground organization in history - he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Embarking on a nonstop, action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra will follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican’s only hope for survival.
"The Taking of Pelham 123"
Armed men led by Ryder (Travolta) hijack a New York subway train in demand of a hefty ransom. As the authorities and Lieutenant Zachary Garber (Washington) try to negotiate with the hostage takers they wonder how the hijackers plan to get away.
"The Taking of Pelham 123" is directed by Tony Scott, of numerous action classics, including "Top Gun," "Enemy of the State" and "Deja Vu." The screenplay was written by Oscar winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland, of "L.A. Confidential," "Mystic River" and "Man on Fire." While John Godey's novel is credited as the inspiration, this is also a remake of the 1974 film of the same name that starred Walter Matthau. Sony Pictures is bringing "The Taking of Pelham 123" to theaters on June 12th this summer.
