Wonder Woman

According to IESB, "There was a regime change late last year over at Silver Pictures, Andrew Roma is now the man in charge and will be the man spearheading the live action 'Wonder Woman' project along with mega producer Joel Silver.

Sources in the Burbank studios have confirmed there is quite a bit of movement on the WW front. With 'Green Lantern' going into production this year, it looks like Princess Diana may finally get the go ahead from WB.

WB and Silver Pictures are in the early stages but they are eager to get started on the movie. Sources tell IESB that WB is looking for new writers on the project and have been taking pitches the last few weeks."

DC will finally start making films based on its other major characters now. Next might be "The Flash" and then "Batman" and "Superman" will return with more sequels. Who knows might can happen once all the DC characters get started with each of their own films. "Justice League" anyone?

When I asked Michael Uslan, the executive producer on all the "Batman" films how DC should go about making a JL movie (like how Marvel is making "The Avengers"), he said that each character should be made into a major film and then brought into a group film.

Seems that is what is going to happen.

DC Movies on Hold

According to Screen Rant, "In an IESB interview for 'The Unborn,' director/writer David Goyer says all DC properties are currently on hold for the time being in regards to film development."

When asked about "Supermax" [a kind of "Green Arrow" movie] and "Justice League," Goyer had this to say.

“A lot of the DC movies at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out, they’re going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause at the moment.”

Screen Rant continued and said, "Including the two movies mentioned, 'Superman' and 'Green Lantern' would also be on hold. With an across the board freeze, Warner Bros. may be looking to create a cohesive DC Universe."

Goyer was also asked if the success of "The Dark Knight" attributed to this freeze.

“It was the double header of both ‘Iron Man’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ coming out, so more than ever I think they’ve realized, I think DC was responsible for 15% of Warner Brother’s revenue this year, something crazy like that, so they realized that comic books, it’s become a new genre, one of the most successful genres.”

What are your thoughts on this freeze? Do you think it might be that WB will try to connect the heroes the way Marvel is?

Meeting Michael Uslan, Batman Producer

I met Michael Ulsan today. Who is he you may ask? I shall tell you.

Michael Ulsan is the world's first professor to teach a class about comic books. This made the news back in the 70's at Indiana University.

Two weeks into his classes he got a phone call.
"Hi, is this Michael Ulsan,' said the voice on the phone. Ulsan replied yes. "This is Stan Lee," continued the voice. Stan Lee wanted to congratulate Ulsan on his job and success for the comic industry. A few hours after that the head of DC comics called and gave Ulsan a job (more like an internship).

Ulsan then helped pen a story for the comic "The Shadow," (which is another comic-to-movie adaptation, "The Shadow") and later got the job to write for Batman.

After that he went to law school and then worked for United Artists and learned about the film industry. He knew what he wanted to do. On Oct. 3, 1979 he bought the rights to Batman, quit his job, and began to start his dream of bringing a dark Batman to the silver screen.

He has produced an amazing list of films including: "Batman," "Batman Returns," "Batman Forever," "Batman and Robin," Constantine," "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," and the upcoming "The Spirit."

After his speech I went up to him and shook his hand and got his autograph. I asked him where he got his tie (which was a full on Spider-Man tie) and he asked where I got my shirt (Joker from "The Dark Knight"). I replied, "I bought it at Hot Topic."
He replied, "Stan Lee gave me this tie." My jaw dropped.

I managed to ask him one brief question. What were his thoughts about Marvel building the "Avengers" franchise and about a possible "Justice League" movie being made. He said that DC had to do it right by making solo films of all the characters, just like what Marvel was doing (he loved "Iron Man"), but that Nolan's Batman might not get along with other superheroes (I did mention an interview with Nolan where Nolan thought his Batman vision wouldn't work in a Justice League world).

Another note of interest that Ulsan said was that the idea to take away from "The Dark Knight" is not to make heroes dark, but to let directors be creative and to stay true to the hero. If all heroes end up being dark, serious, and violent, it would be terrible.

It was a momentous night for me....and I shall not forget it anytime soon.

Also he let out a bit of movie news. He said he is partnering with Sam Raimi (of "Spider-Man") and making a new "The Shadow." You heard it here first folks!

Chris Nolan talks more Batman

Chris Nolan continued the interview with the Los Angeles Times and spoke more about Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and the possible Justice League film.

On whether Nolan's Batman would fit in with the world of the Justice League.

"I don’t think our Batman, our Gotham, lends itself to that kind of cross-fertilization. It goes back to one of the first things we wrangled with when we first started putting the story together: Is this a world in which comic books already exist? Is this a world in which superheroes already exist? If you think of Batman Begins and you think of the philosophy of this character trying to reinvent himself as a symbol, we took the position -- we didn’t address it directly in the film, but we did take the position philosophically -- that superheroes simply don’t exist. If they did, if Bruce knew of Superman or even of comic books, then that’s a completely different decision that he’s making when he puts on a costume in an attempt to become a symbol. It’s a paradox and a conundrum, but what we did is go back to the very original concept and idea of the character. In his first appearances, he invents himself as a totally original creation.

It would have given a very, very different meaning to what Bruce Wayne was leaving home to do and coming back home to do and putting on the costume for and all the rest. We dealt with on its own terms: What does Batman mean to Bruce Wayne, what is he trying to achieve? He has not been influenced by other superheroes. Of course, you see what we’re able to do with Joker in this film is that he is able to be quite theatrical because we set up Batman as an example of intense theatricality in Gotham. It starts to grow outward from Batman. But the premise we began with is that Batman was creating a wholly original thing."

On how he would feel if Heath Ledger was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar in the 81st Academy Awards in January.

"I think the thing that has always been important to me in light of Heath’s death is the responsibility I’ve felt to his work. The responsibility of crafting the film in such a way that his performance came across the way he intended. Clearly, that has been the case. That’s one of the reasons I take such pride in the film.

I felt a great wave of relief, really, as people first started to see the performance and it was clear that they were getting the performance. It’s easy to forget with everything that’s happened what an enormous challenge it was for Heath to take on this iconic role. He rose to that challenge so admirably that any expression of people being excited or moved by his performance is a wonderful thing. Whatever form that takes. People coming to see his performance and getting it. It's been extremely satisfying for all of us already. Anything that adds to that would be wonderful."

Is it just me or have I been putting up a lot of interviews lately?

Justice League tie-in with Dark Knight

The Geek Files spoke with Megan Gale, Australian actress and supermodel who is cast as Wonder Woman in the Justice League Mortal movie, and spoke about the Justice League movie.

"Gale, 33, who's of British and Polynesian descent, was cast as Wonder Woman in the Justice League Mortal film project to have been directed by Happy Feet helmer George Miller.

Also cast in the movie were Armie Hammer as Batman, D.J. Cotrona as Superman, rapper Common as Green Lantern, Adam Brody as The Flash, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman and Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter.

The film, penned by American husband and wife team Kieran and Michele Mulroney, was put on hold after a string of production problems including the refusal of vital tax concessions by the Australian government.

Gale said, 'We didn't get permission to shoot (in Australia) so they've been going back to the drawing board and changing the script a little bit to reflect what's happened in Batman.'"

So how will the storyline of the Dark Knight affect the plot of Justice League? Will it be a deep impact or a one-line reference to something that happened in Dark Knight?

Justice League Mortal is rumored to be out by 2011.

Superman: Man of Steel

Latino Review got an exclusive talk with Paul Levitz, the President of DC Comics.
When asked about Superman: Man of Steel, Paul had this to say.

“Everyone is waiting for Nolan to sign on for another Batman, once that happens, the release date for Superman and all other future projects will follow.”

And there is more. DC wants Brandon Routh, Superman from Superman Returns, to return as the Son of Krypton.
So it won't be a full reboot if it has the same actor.
DC is waiting for Chris Nolan to sign the deal with the next Batman, and DC wants him to commit to a July 2011 release. If that happens then the following superhero films will be released.

Green Lantern Summer 2010
Batman 3 Summer 2011
New Superman reboot Summer 2012
Also in the mix is The Flash.

Green Lantern will come out before Superman, but what if Brandon Routh did a cameo in the Green Lantern film as Clark Kent (as a recent rumor I heard said might happen)? Would DC be trying to copy Marvel in the wake of the Avengers to create, *gasp*, the Justice League?
