Box Office results for the weekend!
1 Shrek Forever After$71.2 M
2 Iron Man 2$26.6 M
3 Robin Hood $18.7 M
4 Letters to Juliet $9.1 M
5 Just Wright $4.2 M
6 MacGruber $4.1 M
7 Date Night $2.8 M
8 A Nightmare On Elm Street $2.2 M
9 How To Train Your Dragon $1.8 M
10 Kites $1.0 M
"Shrek: The Final Chapter" (or "Forever After"") dominated the box office its opening weekend just like all the previous "Shrek" movies did. The problem is it is a lower opening than both "Shrek 2" and "Shrek 3." Maybe kids and their parents are tiring of the "Shrek" franchise? Though about 61 percent of the film's haul came from 3D showings.
Wanna know what was a big surprise? How "MacGruber" TANKED. Though I haven;t featured it on this blog, I wound up seeing it and can say it is extremely raunchy - but also pretty darn funny. Was not expecting that from a movie based off an unfunny SNL skit. But it is enjoyable and should be seen.
But "MacGruber," which opened on 2,551 screens, made only $4.1 million. Wanna know how bad that is? It's so bad, that a Queen Latifah movie, on its 2nd week of release, and in only 1,831 screens, made more money. When a Queen Latifah movie beats you, you know you're in trouble.
Do yourself a favor and go see "MacGruber" instead of "Shrek" or "Robin Hood" this week. It really is that funny. You'll be saving cinema from Hollywood believing Queen Latifah can just roll out a stupid comedy every six months and make a buck.
"Iron Man 2" and "Robin Hood" continue to rake in some cash, with the former now at over $500 million worldwide, but the latter still in some financial trouble (for now). And yeah, there's that Amanda Seyfried chick flick out as well. Didn't it. Though I did see her film "Chloe" where she gets naked. Now that was worth a buck.
And "Kites" came out of nowhere. A type of Bollywood film edited for American audiences by Brett Ratner of all people. Huh...
Anyway, next weekend its brawn vs. botox, sands of time vs. ravages of time and any other funny vs. quips out there dealing with "Prince of Persia" and "Sex and the City 2." Which will win the weekend. Judging by the amount of guys who will have to see a certain film...eh, you can guess.

Box Office Results and Weekly Movie News
Movies coming out this week!
Armored - A newbie guard for an armored truck company is coerced by his veteran coworkers to steal a truck containing $42 million. But a wrinkle in their supposedly foolproof plan divides the group, leading to a potentially deadly resolution.
Brothers - Sam Cahill (Maguire) returns from being held as a prisoner-of-war in Afghanistan to find that his ex-con brother (Gyllenhaal) has become the man, of sorts, of the household where Sam's wife, Grace (Portman) had been living under the assumption that she was a widow.
Everybody's Fine - A widower (De Niro) takes an impromptu road trip in order to reconnect with his grown children, only to discover that his family members are living far from perfect lives.
Transylmania - A horror comedy that follows a group of college kids who travel to Transylvania for a semester at Razvan University, which isn't as picturesque (or safe) as it appeared on its brochure.
Movies coming out on DVD and Blu-ray!
Terminator Salvation
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
A Christmas Tale
Paper Heart
Box Office results for the weekend!
1 The Twilight Saga: New Moon$42.5 M
2 The Blind Side$40.1 M
3 2012 $18.0 M
4 Old Dogs$16.8 M
5 Disney's A Christmas Carol $16.0 M
6 Ninja Assassin $13.1 M
7 Planet 51 $10.2 M
8 Precious $7.0 M
9 The Fantastic Mr. Fox $7.0 M
10 The Men Who Stare at Goats $1.5 M
"New Moon" almost lost the holiday weekend as "The Blind Side" hit from...well...the blind side. But the vampire/werewolf romance flick stayed on top, but ended up falling over 70 percent from last weekend. Still, it is just under $475 million worldwide on a projected budget of only $50 million.
"The Blind Side" improved its numbers from last weekend, as did "A Christmas Carol." But "Old Dogs" and "Ninja Assassin" fell through the ranks. Heck, "The Road" didn't even make it on the Top 10 list.
Can "New Moon" stay on top for three weekends in a row or will another film take its place? If it does fall, what film do you think will win the weekend?
More news to come! Catch ya' later!

'The Road' Behind-the-Scenes Featurette
One long featurette that gives a behind-the-scenes look on the making of "The Road" has appeared online thanks to Apple.
I expect that this video (among other special features) will wind up on the DVD and Blu-ray for "The Road." It gives a great analysis of all the actors for the film while trying not to spoil anything for those who have not read the book.
Watch and enjoy!
"The Road" hits theaters this Wednesday.

Old Dogs - Ben (Williams) is a successful businessman whose professional and personal life is altered when an old flame re-enteres his life -- with her two children (twins!) in tow. The Road - A father (Mortensen) and son (Smit-McPhee) walk for months across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic landscape in search of civilization.
Ninja Assassin - Raizo (Rain) is a rogue ninja who comes to the aid of Mika Coretti (Harris), a Berlin-based Interpol agent who has linked the shadowy Ozunu Clan, a secret society of assassins who trained Raizo, to a series of murders. 10 Law Abiding Citizen $1.6 M
As I previously posted, "New Moon" shattered lots of opening day records, but it has settled in third place for highest grossing weekend (it sits behind "Dark Knight" and "Spider-Man 3").
Dang...that means "New Moon" beat out the opening weekend of "Transformers 2" by $32 million. This is a very high number for a film not coming out over the summer.
*GASP* But "Eclipse" does...
To those of you who hate the "Twilight" franchise and want to decry this as some sort of referendum on pop culture: I reject your argument. The film is probably excellent for those who read and enjoyed the books. It wasn't fun for anyone that hadn't.
Seeing as how I am not a fan of the books, I just say that the movie is good for people who are. And since I know someone who has seen it three times already...well...yeah...
"The Blind Side" actually opened very well and I think might be Sandra Bullocks best opening for any of her films. I will have to check the numbers on that fact.
Other films fill the rest of the slots, with "2012" still causing destruction and "Planet 51" pulling in the little kiddies.
What about next weekend? Will the vampire/werewolf/human love triangle conquer all or will it plummet, letting other films take the spotlight? We'll have to wait and see.

New 'The Road' Trailer
The Weinstein Company has debuted a new trailer for John Hillcoat's "The Road." This movie's release date has bounced around several times, but a date has finally been settled on and the movie will be hitting theaters in less than a month.
Based on Cormac McCarthy's beloved, best-selling and Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen leads an all-star cast in the big screen adaptation of "The Road," the epic post-apocalyptic tale of a journey taken by a father (Viggo Mortensen) and his young son (newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee) across a barren landscape that was blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and most life on earth.
"The Road" hits theaters on November 25.

‘The Road’ Delayed Yet Again

"Nine," the musical adaptation of the stage play directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago") was already slated for November 25, is a Weinstein feature and is also a heavy Oscar favorite. So why move another film to that same date?
There’s no real explanation as to why the move is being made. October is still fair ground for Oscar hopefuls and the term “late November” (the start of the Holiday Season) is practically synonymous with “crowded movie market” in this country.
So, as it stands, the move now pits "The Road" up against not only "Nine," but also "The Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Ninja Assassin" and "Old Dogs" with Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" getting a limited release with plans to expand nationwide on December 11.
In an article at Variety, Ali Jaafar says the studio is planning a multi-layered marketing operation for "The Road," targeted at both fans of McCarthy's book and audiences fascinated by the more ghoulish aspects of the tale such as the hordes of cannibal killers roaming the barren landscape.
The Road will be in theaters Nov. 25, 2009…for now.

Five Clips from 'The Road'
"The Road" has taken a long time to get to theaters and has finally been shown at the Venice Film Festival. Reviews from that screening are primarily positive, but more importantly they all seem to agree the film sticks close to Cormac McCarthy's beloved, best-selling and Pulitzer Prize winning novel.
Viggo Mortensen stars in the post-apocalyptic tale as a father (Mortensen) and his young son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) venture across a barren landscape that was blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and most life on earth. You can watch the trailer here.

The Road Trailer
"The Road" is a film that people have been waiting to hear more about but just kept getting delayed. I believe it was originally slated for a 2008 release, but well, that didn't happened.
But now we finally get the trailer for the anticipated film.
"The Road" is directed by Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat, of "To Have and to Hold" and the western "The Proposition" previously. After delaying the film for more than a year, The Weinstein Company will now officially be bring "The Road" to theaters on October 16 later this year.
