The fourth film in the "Underworld" series has been delayed from its original release date of January 21, 2011 to September 23, 2011.
Box Office Mojo says the film is 'no longer in 3D' which begs the question of why its release is being delayed. After all the talk about this film being in 3D and now this delay, I can only wonder if there is trouble brewing behind-the-scenes.
Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the series, is apparently returning to direct "Underworld 4," although Kate Beckinsale previously expressed reluctance on returning for the fourth film.
But if Wiseman, Beckinsale's husband returns, than it is most likely that she will return to the franchise as well. If she does, "Underworld 4" might be her last time as Selene as she may hand the reins over to another character or have a different actress portray the lead role.

Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films and poster girl of the franchise has yet to sign on for the film and there is still no director attached either.
However, Hlavin does confirm that the film is a sequel and that it will definitely appeal to fans of the first movies.
“I can tell you it’s not a prequel," he said. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements.”
What we also know about the franchise as reported in August is that "Underworld 4" will be in 3-D, it will kickstar a second trilogy of films for the franchise and it will likely bring back Kate Beckinsale. It's been reported that the movies will again center on Beckinsale’s character of Selene, so none of this comes as a shock.
Don’t be surprised to find out in the near future that Kate will be back. There’s been no talk of Scott Speedman and his character Michael Corvin however. And how can you have Selene without her lycan/vampire hybrid boyfriend?

I'm starting to get confused on all the "Underworld 4" news popping up in the past month. First it was that "Underworld 4" would be coming our way in 3-D, and later that it would launch a second trilogy. We also heard the good news that it would bring back the star of the franchise, Kate Beckinsale, into her death-dealing role of Selene, the leather-clad vampire gunslinger.
At a Beverly Hills press conference for her upcoming thriller, "Whiteout," Beckinsale was asked about her involvement in the next "Underworld" installment and she said that she had not signed on for another movie yet.
“I don’t know anything about a '4th Underworld.' I don’t know anything about that at this point.”
Kate was then asked to clarify if she knew anything about "Underworld 4."
“I know they have…it was always conceived as a trilogy, which I was never going to be in the third one. I think if they came up with an amazing script I wouldn’t be adverse to it. But it’s not planned or anything.”
So she admits to knowing about it and would do it if the script’s good. What about a trilogy of new films?
“God, three whole more!”
“I don’t think my daughter needs to see my bottom in rubber for another ten years. But I don’t know, I’ve heard they’re talking about a 4th one, but I don’t know if that’s officially happening or it’s that a rumor. As far as I’m concerned it’s just a rumor.”
I still expect her to return to the role. She’s completed filming "Everybody’s Fine" with Robert De Niro and only has one other project ("April 23") listed in development. The franchise needs to bring back the star and she doesn’t have much else on her plate.
Fans want to see her back, the studio would like her back, the film will make an easy profit and it will giver her some more stardom - Wins all around.
As we said earlier, there’s no official confirmation either way on this yet, but "Underworld 4" does have an official release date of January 21, 2011.
Check out Kate Beckinsale in "Whiteout," opening September 11, 2009. The trailer for it is below and the only good part of it is when Beckinsale is in the shower (oh, now you really want to watch it, don't you?).

The rumored plan is that the new trilogy would hopefully bring back Kate Beckinsale’s character and now it seems we may be very close to getting confirmation that the star of the franchise will be back in the fan-favorite role as the death-dealing vampire, Selene.
According to two sources from Bloody Disgusting, Kate Beckinsale is set to return to the franchise. However, they’ve been unable to get official confirmation as of yet.
My guess is that Beckinsale will return. The continuous "Underworld" updates this week keep building on each other and there will definitely be something major soon. This is arguably her most famous role and she has a relatively open schedule at the moment. As the star of the franchise, fans and the studio want her back so she can help drive the franchise to more success in the future.
Let’s not forget that the next "Underworld" movie is coming in 3-D. Now that the movie has a recognizable brand name, bringing back the star and presenting the next film in the 3-D format will build a lot of hype and should allow for some significant growth at the box office.
No word yet on other actors/character returning, but if these movies are sequels, we can expect Scott Speedman to make a return (his schedule is also open at the moment).

ShockTillYouDrop has learned that Sony's Screen Gems is moving ahead with a fourth film in the "Underworld" franchise and plans to have it ready by January 2011 release, mirroring the January release of "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" earlier this year as well. The movie will be shot in 3-D.
No word yet on whether or not any of the stars of "Rise of the Lycans," such as Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy or Rhona Mitra, will be returning, or whether they'll bring back any of original cast like Kate Beckinsale or Scott Speedman. In fact, no word yet on what this film will even be about.
They’ve done a great job so far of tying the films together and bringing back characters big and small to tell each story. Could we get another Kate Beckinsale-Scott Speedman team-up or perhaps some more Michael Sheen prequel action? Maybe it’ll be neither.
What I’m afraid of is the fact that they’re doing this in 3-D. That screams gimmick to me and I feel that’s the only reason they’re making it at this point. It could have little to do with the other installments and may bring back none of the main characters we know from the franchise.
I hope that’s not the case as I enjoy the cool action in the "Underworld" movies. I hope there’s some story to tell for the fourth film too.
Len Wiseman produced all three films so far and directed the first two, with Patrick Tatopoulos having directed this year’s prequel. Expect Wiseman to again produce.
What do you think of another "Underworld" movie and where/when do you think it’ll take place? Who’d you like to see be in it?
Angels and Demons - Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Hanks) finds himself in Rome, where he has to race against time to prevent the Illuminati, a secret society, from putting in motion a terrorist act that could destroy the Vatican. He's aided in his quest by the beautiful Italian scientist Vittoria Vetri (Zurer).
"Star Trek" made back about half of its projected budget (about $150 million) and probably will rake in more from this film for the rest of the summer. "Wolverine" dropped by 68 percent and will still need to make over $100 million more to make a good enough profit (though a sequel is already in the works).
Other films are still staying there and another film will drop off the bottom as "Angels and Demons" hits theaters this Friday. Who will win out this weekend?
"Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" tells the origins story of the war that is seen in the other "Underworld" movies. Of how Lucian, the first Lycan (a werewolf can never change back to human, a lycan can) fell in love with Sonja, a vampire and daughter to Viktor (an elder with a heavy role in the first film). The story is told in flashbacks in "Underworld," but here we have an entire film (though a short one) that tells the tragic tale.
What makes this film a worthy prequel to the other films is that it stays true to the story. I rewatched the first film and almost everything told about the beginning of the war is exactly the same. A failure is that audiences who have seen the first movie (no doubt they have) will already know what happens.
Bill Nighy returns as does Michael Sheen, and both are great British actors that can play either dramatic roles or those of immortal creatures that kill people. Rhona Mitra ("Doomsday") plays Sonja, a tough vampire chick who is in love with Lucian,a Lycan, which Viktor sees as a betrayal. This is how the war starts.
The love is real (though the sex scene was kind of weird...beyond the point that it was vampire/lycan sex). And the anger is real. It is just hard to see. There is plenty of action, but the universal 'everything is blue' tone from the previous two films returns and it is even darker now. I feel the need to bring a flashlight to this movie just to see what is going on.
What special effects that can be seen are pretty nice, though there really aren't that many. A key point of this series has been using basic effects such as real men dressing up as the werewolves except when it is impossible to do so.
Is this movie a terrible addition to the "Underworld" franchise? No. Would I rather see a film taking place after the very non-closure ending of "Underworld: Evolution?" Yes. Who knows what will come next for this series, but for any fan of vampires and werewolves, this is a good flick to pass an hour and a half.
And just so you know, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) provides a narration for the start of the film and is then seen at the end, though it is rehashed footage and dialogue from the first film (though it cements the similarities between Sonja and Selene).
The Uninvited - After her mother's death and her subsequent hospital stay, Anna Rydell (Browning) returns home to be with her sister (Krebbel) and her father (Strathairn), who has become engaged to Rachel (Banks), her mother's former nurse. During her first night back, Anna is visited by her mother's ghost, who reveals that the new woman in her father's life is not who she pretends to be, leading to a fateful confrontation between the women of the house.
Taken - A former spy (Neeson) relies on his old skills to save his daughter (Grace), who was kidnapped by slave traders during her vacation in Paris.
New in Town - A Miami-based consultant (Zellweger) is shipped out to small-town Minnesota for her newest project: supervising the restructuring of a local manufacturing plant. After a frosty reception, she warms to the townspeople (and vice versa), though a tough business mandate causes her to reconsider her personal and professional objectives.
Oscar nominations brought "Slumdog Millionare" up the rankings while keeping "Benjamin Button" alive. Silly comedy movies seem to do well as "Mall Cop" becomes #1 movie in America twice in a row, beating out the "Underworld" prequel. "Gran Torino" still stays up near the top despite the lack of any Oscar nominations (which it deserved). And I am pretty sure only one-third of the people I know even knew a movie called "Inkheart" came out. Not a lot of advertising for that one... In the end, a slow weekend.
"While on the red carpet for Sony Screen Gems' 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans', we caught up with 'Underworld' creator Len Wiseman who reveals that the franchise might not be done yet. 'There's a lot of talk about a television series, Im looking into that,' he tells B-D exclusively, 'if I could be very involved and can be a certain way, I'd be very interested in that.' He continues, 'We had always hoped to do a trilogy, now that we completed that trilogy it's kind of open, if people can join us and go back in time - and then leap forward, I'd like to go jump all across the time line.' There you have it, a possible 'Underworld' TV series in the works that could take us all across the timeline of Death Dealers vs Lycans."
In my opinion this is a bad idea. First, not everyone from the movies would be involved with the television show (people on and off the screen). Second, the storyline for the films are already pretty campy (the whole vampire/werewolf thing is getting old). Third, sure, some fans would like to see more "Underworld," but the rest fo the television audience probably wouldn't Unless they came up with some really good material to keep viewers coming back for more every week (And I mean more than just "Oh my god, we're related!" or some dumb idea like that), then the show is probably gonna bomb after one season.
What are your thoughts on a possible "Underworld" television show?
Inkheart - A little girl (Bennett) rallies her friends -- both real and imaginary -- to rescue her father (Fraser), a bookbinder who can bring characters to life by reading aloud, from the clutches of an evil-doer (Serkis).
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - An origins story which reveals the cause of the centuries-old blood feud between the Death Dealers and the Lycans. Lucian (Sheen), a powerful and influential Lycan, rallies his race in an uprising against the vampire king Viktor (Nighy). Joining Lucian is his secret lover, Sonja (Mitra), a vampire who empathizes with the Lycans and looks to help free them from slavery.
Killshot - A botched scam sends an old-school hitman (Rourke) and a young stick-up kid (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) on a mission to find and kill an innocent couple (Jane and Lane) in order to protect their identities.
"It is a prequel set prior to 'Underworld' and 'Underworld: Evolution,' covering the origins of some characters. The prequel will trace the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans. In the Dark Ages, a young Lycan named Lucian emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor, the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Viktor’s daughter Sonja, in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom."
December 2005: "Underworld: Evolution" director Len Wiseman explained that the Underworld franchise was originally conceived as a trilogy. Wiseman said, “We sort of mapped out an entire history and story… a massive collection of ideas and stories that we’re putting out at certain times.”
June 2006: Wiseman said, “The third film is going to be a prequel. It will be the origin story and we find out things we didn’t know about Lucian; he’ll have a much bigger part in it. It will be about the creation [of the races] and what started the war. It will be a period piece. The movie will also focus for the first time through the Lycans’ point of view.” The director also shared, “In terms of the writing, a lot of the writing has been done. We’ve been developing Underworld 3 for a while. I won’t be directing Underworld 3; I’m just going to be producing and writing.” When asked if Kate Beckinsale would reprise her role as Selene in the prequel, Wiseman said, “It will be in the time period before, but it will overlap into the creation of her as well. We’re in the process of seeing how far we go with that.”
There will NOT be any cameo in the film from Kate Beckinsale.
I was hoping for an Underworld 3, but instead we get a prequel. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. If you watched the first Underworld movie, then you know all about the centuries long war between the Vampires and the Werewolves (Lycans).
In this Underworld movie, we shall see how this war started. The only things I am really missing in this movie are Kate Beckingsale (as Selene the vampire) and Scott Speedman (as Corvin, the half vamp/half lycan).
But the first trailer has been released. Take a look.
