Deadpool is the Green Lantern

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter bring word the decision has been made and Ryan Reynolds will take the lead role in the Warner Bros. superhero feature "Green Lantern" based on the DC Comics hero. This makes him the only actor to play both a Marvel (as Deadpool) and DC Comics superhero. This ends the "intense months-long search" that was conducted by Warner Brothers, director Martin Campbell, and producers Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti, as they couldn't come to an agreement on casting until now.

Reynolds is first set to star in the indie one-man thriller "Buried" before moving on to shoot "Green Lantern" down in Australia. The studio is still working out the budget, which was rumored to be at least $150 million, but production is expected to begin in January.

In the past Reynolds has been rumored as the lead in an adaptation of the comic "The Flash" and just recently played the part of Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and is expected to star in a spin-off film of his own with that character as well.

Green Lantern is already set for a June 17, 2011 release and Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. "Green Lantern" began at DC in 1940, telling the story of Alan Scott. A new Green Lantern came in 1959 as Hal Jordan, a second-generation test pilot. Jordan is the most popular Green Lantern in the comic universe and the one that will be portrayed in the film. Jordan is an ordinary man who has been charged with defending a sector of the universe.

Is Reynolds a good choice to play the Green Lantern? I suspect this puts him out of the running to ever play The Flash (which I feel is a more suited role for him) and will wind up delaying the "Deadpool" film. Both comic films are expected to come out in 2011, so will they be competing against each other? Can "Deadpool" even happen now if the film doesn't have a writer or director yet while "Green Lantern" is just the start of a major franchise?

More news to come! Catch ya' later!

Hal Jordan didn't become GL until about 1960. The Green Lantern of the 1940s and 50s was Alan Scott, who received his ring from the remains of an asteroid.

Scott has never been a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

You are absolutely right!
Scott was just a defender of Gotham City before Batman came. Hal Jordan is the second Green Lantern (and then became the Spectre before being reborn).

Thanks Guy.

Nah, for some reason I don't see him as Green Lantern--Hal Jordan especially. As you said, he might work better as The Flash.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of GL, this is still one superhero I've always wanted to see make the jump to the big screen. Green Lantern is one of the heroes that deals with cosmic and interplanetary threats so that could just be so cool to see--if they do it right.

I see the Green Lantern as being a serious guy (Hal Jordan is pretty serious) while the Flash likes to crack jokes (Reynolds likes to crack jokes).

So I don't really get it, but I'm hoping everything can work out.
And they better do things right.
