'POTC 4' Director Ahoy!

A new captain is coming on board for the next installment in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

Rob Marshall is set to steer "POTC 4," replacing Gore Verbinski who had stepped down to focus on a film adaptation of the video game "Bioshock."

The studio is beginning to cast a series of new characters for the film, and wants to get the project done before Johnny Depp takes a role as Tonto in "The Lone Ranger."

Marshall is a somewhat unexpected choice. His credits include the musicals "Annie" (for TV), "Chicago," the upcoming musical "Nine" and 2005's "Memoirs of a Geisha."

But he would fit with the studio's desire to scale the franchise back to something smaller, simpler and more character-driven. Hopefully Marshall won't give us any song and dance numbers on the high seas.

"Pirates 4" was previously rumored to be about Captain Jack Sparrow meeting up with Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in the newly founded New Orleans, where they embark on a quest to find the Fountain of Youth.

Filming on "Pirates" is set to begin next year, with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
