ShockTillYouDrop has learned that Sony's Screen Gems is moving ahead with a fourth film in the "Underworld" franchise and plans to have it ready by January 2011 release, mirroring the January release of "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" earlier this year as well. The movie will be shot in 3-D.
No word yet on whether or not any of the stars of "Rise of the Lycans," such as Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy or Rhona Mitra, will be returning, or whether they'll bring back any of original cast like Kate Beckinsale or Scott Speedman. In fact, no word yet on what this film will even be about.
They’ve done a great job so far of tying the films together and bringing back characters big and small to tell each story. Could we get another Kate Beckinsale-Scott Speedman team-up or perhaps some more Michael Sheen prequel action? Maybe it’ll be neither.
What I’m afraid of is the fact that they’re doing this in 3-D. That screams gimmick to me and I feel that’s the only reason they’re making it at this point. It could have little to do with the other installments and may bring back none of the main characters we know from the franchise.
I hope that’s not the case as I enjoy the cool action in the "Underworld" movies. I hope there’s some story to tell for the fourth film too.
Len Wiseman produced all three films so far and directed the first two, with Patrick Tatopoulos having directed this year’s prequel. Expect Wiseman to again produce.
What do you think of another "Underworld" movie and where/when do you think it’ll take place? Who’d you like to see be in it?
More news to come! Catch ya' later!

I know they were sort of hinting at doing another one on the Rise of the Lycans DVD commentary. Personally, I'm hoping for another one with Kate Beckinsale--even though she's gone on record that she's done playing Selene--because I sort of felt let down by the ending of the 2nd one. There's definitely more story that I want to see.
3D could be kind of neat to see, though. Imagine the weapons flying through the air and maybe some Lycans jumping towards you from the screen. We'll have to see what happens.
The ending of "Evolution" begs for some kind of continuation of Selene's story.
I really do hope she comes back. Time away from a franchise can change some people's minds.
