Del Toro Updates on 'The Hobbit'

Guillermo del Toro spoke this week to MTV News about casting the lead character for his upcoming film "The Hobbit," Bilbo Baggins and about the hot topic of the “bridge” film that would tie this movies into Peter Jackson’s "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Months ago Peter Jackson and del Toro confirmed that "The Hobbit" would be spread over two separate films and that when it’s all said and done, you could sit down and watch all the films together as a well-flowing pentology. They were working out the script with the team and things were looking good.

Fast forward to now and we have two new updates from the last two days. The first is that del Toro is very close to announcing who will be playing the lead in the movies.

In addition to knowing they’ve made their selection for Bilbo Baggins, MTV News also reported that del Toro is not going to be directing a “bridge film” that would tie "The Hobbit" movies into the "LOTR" trilogy. In the interview, del Toro said:

“I’m doing only two movies because I felt that that was the best way to service the book… I’m not saying the other notion was not discussed. We discussed it a large degree. But I felt that for me, the two films were the way to go.”

The director has also settled on where exactly the first film will end and the second will begin. “When you read the book, there is only one place to break it really,” he said. “And everybody knows it. It’s been discussed in forums and there’s a lot of people that are right. That’s where it’s going to break. So it’s very simple.

“What we’re doing is because we have the relationship between Bilbo and Thorin and all the dwarves, there is a logical place for that relationship,” del Toro continued. “There is a moment in the book where something is accomplished that allows us to say, ‘Okay, on to the next one after this.’”

Would you still like to see "a bridge" film to complete the gap between "The Hobbit" and "LOTR" even if Tolkien did not write it? And where do you think the two "Hobbit" films will break?
More news to come! Catch ya' later!

I liked the Hobbit. I don't remember though where the break in the story is, but I do know that it takes place 40-60 years before LOTR. So even if they were to "bridge" it, people would be like: "Well, things change over the course of 60 years." So I expect it to be different.

Actually, after further research, the most logical break is between Ch. 8-9. Thorin is captured by the spider king (?) in the Mirkwood forest...I think.

It has been a long time since I read The Hobbit, but I did enjoy the cartoon version from many years ago.

A bridge film could work, but I think the films all work fine as they are. The Hobbit continued on to the LOTR fine in my opinion.
