'Star Trek 2' Will Beam Into Theaters Summer 2012

It looks like Paramount Pictures has decided on a tentative release date for the anticipated "Untitled Star Trek Sequel" as it stakes claim to June 29, 2012.

That’s two and a half years away, coming out just a few short months before that Mayan calendar runs out.

The date that’s apparently been set is a great one for the type of sure-fire-hit "Star Trek 2" will be, as it’s the first Friday before the July 4th weekend in 2012, and currently it’s the only big movie scheduled to hit theaters that month. Expect more films to be announced for 2012 as we actually get closer to that year.

Apart from the fact that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are returning to write the script – with "Lost" co-creator/writer/exec producer Damon Lindelof jumping on-board to help out – and that most of the cast will most likely be returning, we don’t really know anything about the "Star Trek" sequel.

Will Abrams return to direct? Who will be the villain this time around? Will there be political and social metaphors in the film like the original series? Heck, what will the basic plot of the film be? It’s all just speculation at this point.

What do you think of the "Star Trek" sequel getting a summer 2012 release date? Were you hoping for sooner? What would you like to see in the next film – a better villain, more action sequences or more character interaction?

As stated, "Star Trek 2" is tentatively set to hits theaters on June 29, 2012.
