Marvel's Joe Quesada Says 'Captain America' Will Rock

The 2011 release date for "The First Avenger: Captain America" inches ever closer as 2009 enters its home stretch, and the key release for Marvel's "Avengers" film franchise looks like it has editor-in-chief Joe Quesada's approval. He offered his initial impression of the script at Big Apple Comic Con last weekend.

"I've seen a couple of outlines and an initial screenplay, and it's going to rock everyone's socks off," he told his panel's audience, according to Comic Book Resources. "It's very unexpected, the kind of movie it is."

The comics industry veteran didn't defy any expectations himself by revealing what kind of movie "The First Avenger" will be, but he did say that the film would set up "The Avengers" in "a fantastic way." Quesada wouldn't reveal which actors are in line to play Captain America, but confirmed that Marvel has a shortlist of candidates for the title role.

That actor who picks up the part will have a tall order ahead, starring alongside Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man") and hopefully Edward Norton ("Incredible Hulk") in a leadership role for the team when he moves on to the fated "Avengers" crossover in 2012. It will also have to be someone with an open calendar for a couple of years to make those back-to-back releases.

"Captain America" is set for release on July 22, 2011 with Joe Johnston ("The Wolfman") directing.
