The weekend ended with "Avatar" taking $75 million in North America and $145 million overseas, bringing its total earnings so far to $212 million in North America and $403 million overseas - a global total of a staggering $615 million in just 10 days.

But "Sherlock" is still celebrating - the film took $65 million on its weekend debut in North America, the biggest Christmas weekend opening of all time Stateside. The previous record-holder was "Meet the Fockers" at $46 million.

Together, "Avatar," "Sherlock" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" led the biggest weekend of all time at the North American box office, with ticket sales racking up $285 million, reports Variety.

"It's Complicated" opened as was the adult alternative title, which was well placed among the more action and kid films. Meanwhile, "The Princess and the Frog" fell heavily (when it was expected to pick up again) while "Nine" had very little opening power.

This beat the previous biggest weekend when "The Dark Knight" opened in July 2008, which brought in $260 million for the three-day take. Not bad for the last weekend in 2009.
