The Farrelly Brothers production on their "Three Stooges" movie hit a road bump earlier this year when Sean Penn, who was set to star as zany middleman, Larry, dropped out of the film due to personal reasons.
SlashFilm recently discovered an article from The Boston Globe that has a few interesting casting changes. They're reporting that Jim Carrey, who was originally on-board to play Curly, has since dropped out, but they don't have a replacement just yet. Additionally, they say that Paul Giamatti has signed on to replace Sean Penn as Larry, since he is taking time off from acting.
Also starring in "The Three Stooges" is the already-cast Benicio Del Toro, who will be playing the Stooges’ no-nonsense leader, Moe.
"Three Stooges" is still in development and is aiming for release sometime in 2010.

This is actually pretty genius casting. Giamatti kind of looks like Larry. And he's pretty funny.
But who could play Curly now? Even though I don't think we need a 3 Stooges movie, I'm definitely curious on where this is going.
I have no idea what this movie would really be about, I only expect lots of falling down and hitting each other.
But I agree with you on Giamatti. I believe he is a highly underrated actor.
