While being a big fan of the "Resident Evil" video game franchise (it's rare to find a game series where each successive game is as good, if not better, than the last), I am not the biggest fan of the film series.
Each successive movie in the series is worse than the last and I think they are really pulling out all the stops on this one. Big special effects, 3D, etc. Sadly, none of it really looks good except for Wesker. The main villain in the game series is really an ultimate badass and why he has been left out of the film series for so long is beyond me. And don't get me started on Alice...
How many things can they chuck at the screen to frighten us in 3D? And seeing as how "The Matrix" is one of my favorite films of all time, I can't help but see the massive similarities. Then again, some of Wesker's fights from the game series seemed to stem from that film as well.
In either case, if you haven’t been a fan of the franchise up to this point, it seems unlikely that this is going to change your mind. While the movies have featured numerous characters from the games, the story and atmosphere are wildly different. They’ve managed to turn one of the definitive examples of survival horror into a sci-fi superhero story.
"Resident Evil: Afterlife" opens in regular, 3D and IMAX theaters on September 10, 2010.
