Captain America has a director

A director has been hired for Marvel's upcoming Captain America movie.

He is Joe Johnston, who directed Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), The Rocketeer (1991), Jumanji (1995), October Sky (1999), Jurassic Park 3 (2001), Hidalgo (2004) and next year's The Wolf Man starring Benicio Del Toro, Hugo Weaving and Anthony Hopkins.

Johnston was involved in visual effects design for Star Wars films Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back and also for Raiders of the Lost Ark. He first met with Marvel two years ago with talks eventually focusing on Captain America. Much of the project's current direction resulted from those early conversations.

It is reported that there are currently no writers teamed up with Johnston and the Captain America crew.

Kicking off with "Iron Man," Marvel Studios' slate of movies --including "Thor" and "Iron Man 2" -- is building toward an "Avengers" movie set for release in 2011, in which the characters from the films team for one big adventure. "Captain America" is scheduled for release May 6, 2011.

"Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set "Avengers." Executive producing on "Captain" are Louis D'Esposito, Stan Lee and Marvel Studios' chairman David Maisel.
